The Tushetian Shepherd Dog is a genuine livestock guardian from Tusheti, a remote highland district in the northeastern corner of Georgia. It is not a separately recognised breed: the name is a regional type-label for the most highly valued form of the broader Georgian Mountain Dog, known in Georgian as the Kartuli Nagazi (Georgian Nagazi). These dogs live with and protect transhumant flocks of sheep, goats, cattle, and horses that move each year between the Greater Caucasus summer pastures and the lowland winter ranges of Kakheti and Vashlovani, deterring grey wolves, brown bears, golden jackals, and feral dogs.3 It comes in two coat types — a short-haired "Lion" form (often white) and a long-haired "Bear" form. Its boundary with the Soviet-standardised Caucasian Shepherd Dog (FCI No. 328) is historically muddled and politically contested.

I History & origins Documented

The Tushetian type belongs to Georgia's aboriginal mountain guardian population, repeatedly described in credible sources as an "ancient" and "aboriginal" working dog of the country's northeast mountains — Kazbegi, Khevsureti, and Tusheti. An 18th-century Georgian scholar, Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani, is reported to have described a large guard dog called Nagazi, distinguishing it from faster hunting types; this survives only as a secondary summary of a primary source and has not been verified against the original text. The most consequential event in the breed's documented history is the Soviet-era standardisation of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog (FCI No. 328) from roughly 1920 onward under the Red Star Kennel programme, which drew on Georgian, Armenian, and Azerbaijani foundation stock — the FCI later listed that breed's country of origin as Russia, an attribution Georgian cynologists dispute. The Cynological Federation of Georgia adopted a Georgian Mountain Dog / Kartuli Nagazi standard in 2000.9

II Physical & conformation

Recorded coat is Two types (Lion/Bear). A full physical profile — coat structure and care, climate tolerance, skeletal conformation and sexual dimorphism — is not yet collected for this breed.

III Working role Peer-reviewed

The Tushetian dog's core job is guarding flocks on one of Europe's largest surviving transhumance systems. Each year Tush shepherds move up to 40,000–50,000 sheep, some 8,000 cattle, and around 500 horses — with "just as many shepherd dogs" — roughly 200–300 km between summer highlands in Tusheti (about 1,900–3,200 m) and semi-arid winter pastures near Vashlovani (about 90–708 m), crossing the Abano Pass at 2,926 m.6 The dogs travel the full route, acting as predator deterrents on the mountain trails and as farm and camp guardians in winter. A peer-reviewed field survey of Tushetian farms found working guardian use ongoing and widespread — every surveyed farm kept at least one dog, averaging about 7.8 per farm — with dogs protecting sheep, goats, cattle, horses, and donkeys.3 The type's leaner, more athletic build is widely described as an adaptation to the endurance demands of long-distance mountain transhumance rather than to maximum body mass.

IV Behavioral profile Qualitative

Behavioural information for the Tushetian type comes mainly from a field survey of working farms and from ethnographic and safety sources, not from formal temperament studies. In that survey, guardian dogs were present during 62% of 105 documented predator attacks and responded by barking and chasing in at least 90% of cases; owners defined a "good" dog as one attentive to livestock (51%), aggressive to predators (12%), and "not afraid of wolves" (7%).3 The breed standard describes dogs "accustomed to make decisions independently," and official Tusheti guidance warns hikers that the dogs will attack strangers who approach the flock.9 The ratings below are qualitative, drawn from these descriptions — not measured scores. Traits without a documented assessment are shown as gaps rather than guessed.

V Health Data not yet collected

No veterinary study focuses on the Tushetian Shepherd Dog or the Georgian Nagazi type. No hip, elbow, cardiac, or eye screening data, and no lifespan figures, have been published for this population. What follows is proxy and context evidence, labelled as such:

  • Tick-borne and transhumance-route disease exposure. Veterinary surveillance of Georgia's seasonal migration corridors — the routes these dogs travel — documents piroplasmosis, babesiosis, theileriosis, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, and foot-and-mouth disease as regional risks.8
  • Livestock-management disease context. Studies of the eastern Georgian transhumant system (Kakheti) document brucellosis and broader disease-surveillance concerns in the flocks these dogs work alongside.7
  • General large-breed risks. Orthopedic disease (hip and elbow dysplasia) and bloat (GDV) apply to a dog of this size, but remain unquantified for this type.

There is no breed-specific longevity, orthopedic-screening, or inherited-disease data. Health claims circulating in pet-video and fansite material are not backed by any study.

VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed

No genetic study names the Tushetian type as a discrete population; the nearest evidence covers Georgian livestock-guarding dogs generally, sampled by owner description. A microsatellite and mtDNA study of Georgian guardian dogs and wolves (102 wolves, 57 dogs) found that most dogs carried maternal haplotypes clustering with East Asian dog lineages, but that dogs and wolves regularly exchange genes — about 37% of dogs and 20% of wolves shared mitochondrial haplotypes, with roughly 2–3% of sampled animals identified as probable first-generation hybrids.1 A genome-wide survey of 304 livestock-guarding dogs found extensive shared ancestry and gene flow among modern LGD breeds driven by historical livestock migration, and it debunks the popular single-origin "Tibetan Mastiff ancestor" story.2 Earlier Caucasus genetics work showed that the region's named guardian populations cluster together with very low genetic differentiation, making fine regional distinctions — Tushetian versus Caucasian Ovcharka versus Georgian Nagazi — genetically ambiguous without breed-specific sampling.5 A Georgian government mtDNA study of Georgian Mountain Dog populations (Pshav-Khevsurian and Adjarian, over 100 individuals) is under way but was not published in English at the time of research.10

The Tushetian type sits inside a cluster of Caucasus and Georgian highland guardian populations whose boundaries are unresolved. Genetics shows extensive gene flow and low differentiation across these breeds, so the labels below mark overlapping working populations rather than cleanly separated lineages.

VIII Conservation & status Documented

There is no formal conservation assessment for the Tushetian type: no FAO DAD-IS entry or registry record exists for a "Tushetian Shepherd Dog" as a named breed, so no at-risk status can be honestly assigned. The available evidence is qualitative and points to decline of the working population.

Documented pressures include rural depopulation (few young Tush continuing transhumance), Soviet-era disruption (1950s resettlement and export of quality dogs), and widespread crossbreeding — a field survey found 66% of working farm dogs described by owners as mixed-breed, with only 25% called "Georgian" and 10% "Caucasian."3 The loss of traditional sheepdog socialisation and training knowledge is also documented.4 Preservation efforts include the Cynological Federation of Georgia's breed programme, the Georgia Carnivore Conservation Project / NACRES socialisation work with Tushetian shepherds, and post-Soviet enthusiast revival groups — some of which have warned that the breed is "close to disappearing in its natural environment." A separate issue is organised dog-fighting, documented in Georgian media, which selects for inter-dog aggression in some lines and is distinct from — and undermines — the livestock-guardian role.

IX Setting the record straight

"Descended from the Tibetan Mastiff."
Genome-wide analysis of livestock-guarding dogs debunks the single-origin, Tibetan-Mastiff-ancestor story. Modern LGD breeds share ancestry shaped by historical livestock migration, not descent from one ancient breed.
"A distinct, genetically isolated Tushetian breed."
No genetic or morphometric study characterises the Tushetian type as a separate population. Caucasus guardian dogs cluster together with very low differentiation, and about two-thirds of working farm dogs surveyed were owner-described as mixed-breed.
"An ancient warrior dog with wolf ancestry."
The war-dog claim is unsupported by archaeological or historical evidence. Wolf–dog gene flow is real but incidental — a consequence of leaving large dogs loose in wolf country, not a deliberate breeding strategy.
"A naturally gentle family dog, safe with children."
Not supported by any behavioural study. The working role selects for strong territorial and stranger-aversive behaviour; official Tusheti guidance warns hikers the dogs will attack intruders near the flock.

What we're still learning

The Tushetian Shepherd Dog is best understood as the prized regional type of Georgia's Nagazi guardian population rather than a separately documented breed. There is no published genetics, morphometrics, health survey, breed standard, or conservation assessment for the Tushetian type specifically, and its boundary with the Caucasian Shepherd Dog and neighbouring Georgian highland types remains unresolved. Most precise-sounding figures come from a single field survey or from breed-club and fansite sources — treat them accordingly.
