The Landscape Documented

The Caucasus Mountains form a geological wall between the Black and Caspian seas, dividing Europe from Asia across some of the most rugged terrain on the continent. For millennia its pastoralists have practised vertical transhumance — moving flocks from low winter pastures to high alpine summer meadows — a rhythm that rewarded working dogs with stamina, heavy bone and a dense, weather-proof coat.

A regional epithet for the heavy northern guardian type. The word names the dog's function — not its appearance — and long predates any modern breed standard.

“sheepdog” (Russian)

A Soviet-era administrative umbrella applied to the region's aboriginal guardians. In the West it causes lasting confusion by lumping flock-guarding molossers together with herding dogs.

Geopolitical Pressure Documented

Soviet military requisition

From the 1920s the Red Army's Krasnaya Zvezda (“Red Star”) kennels drew the largest, boldest aboriginal dogs into military programmes, helping open a split between working flock dogs and the heavier show type later seen in the West.

Collectivisation & the end of transhumance

Forced collectivisation (the kolkhoz system) dismantled the nomadic shepherding that had shaped these dogs for centuries. As routes closed and pastures were fenced, the aboriginal dog's original job — and much of its breeding population — contracted sharply.

07 Genetics & ancestry

Genetics vs. geography Documented

Modern livestock guarding dogs do not form a single genetic clade. Research identifies two broad lineages — one East Asian and one European/West Asian — with multiple ancient ancestries. Extensive gene flow, shaped by historical pastoral migrations and transhumance, has occurred among guardian breeds across Eurasia, consistent with multiple independent origins rather than a single ancestor.

The popular picture of a single, ancient “Caucasian Shepherd” is largely a Soviet administrative creation. Under that umbrella sit several distinct aboriginal populations — the Georgian Nagazi, the Armenian Gampr, and Dagestani and Azerbaijani dogs — that predate the breed label, and the genetic record barely reaches them: the Armenian Gampr and Georgian Nagazi have no peer-reviewed population-genetic study at all (only a commercial Embark profile exists for the Gampr).

What little exists points the same way. The one mtDNA survey (Ivanova et al., 2006) found only the globally common haplogroups A and B, at low diversity. The best SNP data (Janeš et al., 2021 — just five dogs) makes the Caucasian Shepherd one of the more distinct guardian populations, yet it clusters with its neighbours — Šarplaninac, Tornjak and Kuvasz — exactly as geography and documented gene flow (including with Caucasian wolves) would predict. The 2024 genome-wide synthesis is blunter still: guardian dogs are not one ancient clade but at least two independently evolved lineages spread by transhumance, with no single ancestor.

In short: the geography describes an under-sampled landrace continuum at a crossroads; the marketing describes a monolithic ancient breed — and the evidence, thin as it is, sides with the geography.

Maternal-line (haplogroup) signal Documented

mtDNA haplogroups A & B — low diversity

The only mtDNA survey to include Caucasian guardian dogs (Ivanova et al., 2006) reported the globally common haplogroups A and B, at comparatively low diversity — less than in Central Asian guardians. Because A and B are shared by dogs the world over, this places the region's maternal lines squarely within the common global pool; it is not evidence of breed uniqueness or “ancient purity.” No Y-chromosome or whole-genome haplotype study of these dogs exists — and none at all for the Armenian Gampr or the Georgian Nagazi.

Haplogroups trace a single ancestral line — maternal lineage for mitochondrial DNA, or paternal lineage for Y-DNA. They represent a small portion of a dog's total genetic makeup. A haplogroup assignment does not identify a breed, confirm working role, or establish suitability for livestock guarding. The same haplogroup can appear across many geographically and functionally unrelated dog populations.

Breed ≠ Role ≠ Ancestry

We keep three things separate: what a dog is (breed identity), what it does (working role), and where its genes came from (ancestry). Genetics describes ancestry only — it never certifies working ability, temperament, or breed purity, and geographic origin is not proof of a unique lineage.
