The "Azerbaijani Shepherd Dog" is a regional name rather than a single standardised breed. In practice it covers the mountain and steppe livestock-guardian dogs of Azerbaijan — most specifically the native Gurdbasar (Qurdbasar) landrace — which belong to the broader Caucasian Shepherd Dog (Caucasian Ovcharka) complex of the South Caucasus. It is a genuine flock- and property-guarding dog, but it is not recognised as a distinct breed by the FCI, AKC or UKC; its only formal description is a local standard published in 2008.13 The FCI's Caucasian Shepherd standard names Azerbaijan among the breed's countries of origin and notes that dogs there are "fairly tall and lightly built."12 A distinctive caveat: some Azerbaijani lines carry a documented history of dog-fighting selection alongside guardian work, so temperament varies markedly by line.
Name & origin Documented
The dog's native name, Gurdbasar (Qurdbasar), is an Azerbaijani Turkic compound meaning "wolf-crusher" — a function-descriptive epithet rather than a toponym or pedigree label, which is also why English sources render it loosely as "Azerbaijani Wolfhound." This predator-defeating naming habit is shared across the Caucasus: the Armenian gampr ("watchdog") is likewise nicknamed gelkheht, "wolf-choker," and the Georgian equivalent, nagazi, simply means "shepherd dog." The formal alias Qafqaz Çoban İti is the Azerbaijani phrase for "Caucasian Shepherd Dog" (çoban = shepherd), the same animal that Russian nomenclature calls the Caucasian Ovcharka, from ovcharka, "sheepdog."

The native name Gurdbasar means roughly "wolf-crusher," reflecting the dog's traditional role against predators. Like other guardian dogs of the Caucasus, it was shaped by pastoral life rather than a formal breeding programme: flocks moved seasonally between lowland and mountain pasture, and large, independent dogs lived with the sheep to keep watch. This open, landrace breeding — where working ability mattered more than pedigree — is why the region's guardian "types" blend into one another rather than forming sharply separate breeds.1 Native-source accounts trace the dog to antiquity, linking it to the Gobustan rock carvings and claiming roughly three thousand years of continuity, but no archaeological or genetic study has verified the Gurdbasar as a distinct, continuous population. During the Soviet period, Azerbaijani dogs were absorbed into the standardisation of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog (FCI No. 328),12 and breed-standard accounts state that under a 1933 Soviet decree many were exported to Moscow, reportedly depleting the native stock before enthusiasts preserved it. In 2008 a local practitioners' association published the first written standard for the "Azerbaijan Wolfhound – Gurdbasar."13

III Working role Documented
The Gurdbasar's core job is livestock guarding — living with and protecting flocks rather than herding them — combined with property and camp guarding. The 2008 standard describes dogs used to protect sheep flocks, cattle and camel herds, dwellings and farmsteads,13 and they work within Azerbaijan's yaylaq–qishlaq transhumance, moving seasonally between highland summer and lowland winter pasture. Like guardian dogs generally, they deter predators mainly through territorial presence, patrol and warning rather than open combat,4 and their effectiveness is not automatic: research on guardian dogs shows it depends on early bonding with stock, enough dogs for the flock and predator pressure, and steady management.9 Notably, the open landrace breeding typical of these dogs does not appear to erode functional guarding ability.7 The regional predator load is real — wolves and brown bears remain across the range, with a few Caucasian leopards — and guardian dogs in neighbouring Georgia have been documented killing attacking wolves, though no field study has measured Gurdbasar performance directly. Some Azerbaijani lines, especially the lighter steppe/Kanjal type, were also selected for dog-fighting as well as guarding, so working temperament varies considerably between lines.
IV Behavioral profile Qualitative
The behavioural picture comes almost entirely from the 2008 breed standard and consistent working-dog accounts, not from formal behavioural testing.13 Those sources describe a strong, territorial guardian: deeply loyal to its owner, distrustful of strangers, and inclined to engage a threat rather than merely bark. The standard itself lists "cowardice," "excessive excitability" and "uncontrollable aggression" as faults, which signals these are real risks in the population, and every source type agrees the dog is not for novice owners. Because no study has scored this breed, traits without a documented qualitative description are shown as gaps rather than guessed — and the dog-fighting history in some lines means individual temperament can differ sharply from the livestock-guardian norm.
V Health Qualitative
There is no breed-specific veterinary or health study for the Gurdbasar / Azerbaijani Shepherd Dog; this is an open research gap. The points below are proxy expectations for a large Caucasus guardian dog, not measured breed data:
- Joint conditions such as hip dysplasia are a common concern in giant breeds; one enthusiast source suggests it is "not extremely common" in these dogs, but this is unverified and unsupported by data.
- Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus) is the usual risk carried by large, deep-chested dogs.
- Late maturation — the 2008 standard describes dogs reaching full maturity around three years, which matters for managing work load on immature joints.13
- Outdoor working exposure to tick-borne and other regional infectious disease is a plausible risk given Caucasus disease ecology (rabies, for example, is documented in the wider Azerbaijani dog population).14
No longevity figure or disease-rate specific to this breed can be stated honestly until direct studies exist.
VI DNA & origin research Documented
No genetic study has ever sampled an Azerbaijani guardian dog as a named population — a genuine gap.1 What genetics does show is about the wider Caucasian Shepherd complex the Gurdbasar sits within: mitochondrial-DNA work groups the Caucasian Shepherd together with the Central Asian Shepherd and the Anatolian Akbash and Kangal into a single cluster with extremely low differentiation, and finds the Caucasian Shepherd itself has relatively low diversity.2 Genome-wide work likewise shows guardian dogs share multiple ancestries spread by historic livestock movement rather than each region having a separate origin.1
VII Related & compared breeds Documented
The Azerbaijani Shepherd sits inside a broad, weakly differentiated Transcaucasus and Central Asian guardian-dog complex, and its name is easily confused with several neighbours. Cranial morphometrics confirm a shared, recognisable guardian-dog head shape across this Balkan–Anatolian–Caucasus region.3
VIII Conservation & status Qualitative
The Azerbaijani guardian dog has no formal international conservation status; what is known is qualitative and comes mainly from breed-standard and enthusiast accounts:
The Gurdbasar is described as a small, slowly recovering population that came close to depletion in the Soviet era, and it is treated as national heritage inside Azerbaijan, where preservation and formalisation efforts have increased in recent years. The population is largely rural and has never been characterised by a formal survey. The main pressures on the working landrace are the decline of traditional pastoralism and sedentarisation, crossbreeding with modern show-line Caucasian Shepherd Dogs, selection for dog-fighting rather than livestock guarding, and export of quality dogs abroad.
IX Setting the record straight
What we're still learning
Honesty about the gaps matters here more than usual. As far as the indexed scientific literature goes, there is no dedicated genetic, morphometric, behavioural or veterinary study of Azerbaijani pastoral guardian dogs, and no field study of how they are used in Azerbaijani herding systems — almost everything comes from a single 2008 local standard, enthusiast sources, and proxy research on the wider Caucasian Shepherd complex. The broader Transcaucasus guardian complex, including the Armenian Gampr and Georgian types, is also thinly studied. Records in Azerbaijani or Russian may exist but were not available for this review. Until dedicated studies are done, statements about a uniquely "Azerbaijani" dog should be read as regional tradition rather than established fact.
