The Sarabi Dog (Persian: سگ سرابی, Sag-e Sarabi), also called the Persian or Iranian Mastiff, is a large mastiff-type livestock guardian dog from Sarab County in Iran's East Azerbaijan Province. Its name is a toponym — it is named after and originates from the Sarab region.5 Local shepherds have used it for centuries to protect flocks of sheep and goats from predators such as wolves, bears and jackals.6 It is an indigenous Iranian landrace rather than an internationally standardised breed, and it is not recognised by the FCI, AKC, or the major kennel clubs; most published science treats it as one of several distinct Iranian native-dog populations rather than as a formalised breed.2
Name & origin Documented
In the native name Sag-e Sarabi (Persian سگ سرابی), sag is simply the everyday Persian word for "dog" — the dictionary headword shared with the Dari and Tajik forms of the language — while Sarabi (سرابی) is an adjective built with the Persian suffix -i, meaning "of, or belonging to, Sarab." The compound therefore reads literally as "the dog of Sarab," fixing the breed to a single place rather than describing the animal itself; among Iranian guardian-dog terms it is the clearest toponymic label. The English aliases Persian Mastiff and Iranian Mastiff are Western descriptive names that slot it into the mastiff type — translations of convenience rather than renderings of any indigenous term. Persian otherwise attaches a rich working vocabulary to such dogs, from sag-e galla ("flock dog") to sag-e gorg ("wolf dog"), but the Sarabi's name alone is drawn from its home region.

The breed takes its name from Sarab County in Iran's East Azerbaijan Province, and it developed among the shepherds of that region as a flock-and-property guardian. Popular accounts describe it as one of the oldest and most powerful indigenous Iranian guardian dogs and trace it to ancient Persian and Assyrian war and guardian dogs, but this deep ancestry is a tradition carried by breed-profile sources rather than a claim established from archaeological or genetic records.6 What is documented is more recent: since the 2010s the Sarabi has been sampled as a distinct population in a series of Iranian dog-genetics studies, which is where the firmest scientific record of the breed now sits.12

II Physical & conformation
Recorded coat is Short, undercoat. A full physical profile — coat structure and care, climate tolerance, skeletal conformation and sexual dimorphism — is not yet collected for this breed.
III Working role Documented
The Sarabi's core job is guarding flocks of sheep and goats, and it has been used for this purpose in the Sarab region for centuries, deterring wolves, bears and jackals.6 It is primarily a flock and property guardian rather than a herding dog: it lives with and protects its stock and territory instead of moving them, working by presence and deterrence and bonding closely to the animals in its charge.8 Alongside flock protection it is also used to guard homes and property in its home region. A documented modern use is more troubling: the breed is reported to be entered into staged dog fights, a use distinct from — and in tension with — its guarding function.6
IV Behavioral profile Qualitative
In its own descriptions the Sarabi is a typical livestock-guardian profile: calm and non-reactive in familiar surroundings but highly alert and reactive to perceived threats, especially at night, bonding closely to its livestock and territory and working independently with minimal direction from people.8 Toward strangers it can be aloof to aggressive, and it is described as unsuited to inexperienced owners or dense urban living, needing space and either a defined working role or thorough socialisation.8 The ratings below are qualitative readings from breed-profile and comparison sources, not measured behavioural scores; one aggregation also cautions that small household animals may not be safe around it. Traits without a documented assessment are shown as gaps rather than guessed.
VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed
Population genetics is the best-documented aspect of the Sarabi, because it has been sampled repeatedly in studies of Iranian native dogs. Y-chromosome sequencing of male dogs found the Sarabi, Sangsari and Afshari populations to be genetically distinct from one another, consistent with separate lineages maintained by geographic and cultural barriers.4 A microsatellite study using 17 autosomal and Y-chromosome markers found the Sarabi (with the Bakhtiari and Alborz populations) among the few that did not deviate significantly from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium — a sign of a relatively stable, non-bottlenecked population — and recorded the lowest genetic distance in that panel between the Sarabi and Bakhtiari, suggesting shared ancestry between these two northwestern populations.2 A mitochondrial-DNA study of 305 Iranian dogs found the Sarabi carrying haplotypes across haplogroups A, B, C and D — a broader representation than most other Iranian populations — with signals of recent demographic expansion in its northwestern home region.1 Whole-genome resequencing of Iranian dogs and wolves provides a genomic backdrop, finding domestication-associated variation concentrated in functional regions such as olfactory and immune genes.3

The Sarabi is one of several indigenous guardian populations of Iran and its borderlands. Genetic work compares it directly with neighbouring Iranian populations (Sangsari, Afshari, Bakhtiari), and in the wider region it sits among the mastiff-type livestock-guardian dogs of the Caucasus, Kurdistan and Central Asia — some of which have been compared with Iranian samples in microsatellite studies.7
IX Setting the record straight
What we're still learning
Dedicated science specifically on the Sarabi dog is sparse. The genetic studies that include it treat it as one sampling point among Iranian dog populations rather than as their main subject; there is no published whole-genome or SNP-array study targeting the Sarabi, no formal morphometric survey, and no behavioural research. No breed-specific veterinary or health study was found either, so the section is omitted rather than filled with generic large-mastiff risks. The physical figures on this page (height, weight, lifespan) and much of the temperament description come from breed-profile and encyclopedia sources, not from measured surveys, and much of the primary Iranian dog-genetics literature is published in Persian and may not be fully captured here.
