The Landscape Documented
The crucible is the Apennine mountain system running the length of peninsular Italy — above all Abruzzo's Gran Sasso and Majella massifs — extended across the Tyrrhenian to the interior highlands of Sardinia (the Barbagia and Gennargentu), Sicily (the Nebrodi and Madonie), and Corsica's maquis-covered mountains. Its pastoral history is inseparable from transhumance, the seasonal droving of flocks along wide grassy drove-roads called tratturi between high summer pasture and lowland winter grazing. The system was formalised as early as 1447 by the Foggia customs house (Regia Dogana della Mena delle Pecore), and the same seasonal mobility repeatedly mixed regional dog populations.
On this landscape the white flock-guardian of the central Apennines and Tuscan-Lazio Maremma was standardised in 1958 as the Maremma Sheepdog (Cane da Pastore Abruzzese Maremmano), while the islands kept their own working dogs — the Fonnese of Sardinia's Barbagia, the Mannara dog of the Sicilian interior, the Dogo Sardo, and the Corsican Cursinu — alongside the southern molossers of Puglia and Campania. UNESCO inscribed Italian transhumance as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019, formally recognising the pastoral practice that shaped these dogs.
Predators & Threats Documented
The wolf was the central threat the Maremma-Abruzzese met, with the Marsican bear an opportunist, plus organised rustling along the tratturi drove-roads and, on Sardinia, banditry and inter-village raiding.
The wolf has recovered and is again the primary threat; the Marsican bear survives critically endangered, and feral dogs are an ongoing problem in Abruzzo and Sardinia.
Gray Wolf
The Italian wolf (Canis lupus italicus) was the historical adversary of the Apennine flock-guardian and is named as the Maremma's principal predator, with the breed's role described as deterrence and proximity guarding rather than combat. After near-extinction the wolf has recovered strongly across the peninsula since legal protection in 1971, driving renewed use of guardian dogs in coexistence projects. On the islands the picture differs: the Sicilian wolf was hunted to extinction by roughly 1935, and Sardinia has no native wolf.

Geopolitical Pressure Documented
Molosser antiquity claims (Cane Corso, Neapolitan Mastiff)
The southern Italian molossers are widely marketed as an unbroken lineage from Roman war dogs (Canis Pugnax). There is no archaeological or genetic chain of custody linking the modern breeds to Roman dogs; the Cane Corso was recovered from a small remnant population in the 20th century, and its own Italian breed club calls the Roman-war-dog association "romanticised." These are cultural traditions, not evidence of antiquity.
Wolf recovery and coexistence policy
Full legal protection of the Italian wolf since 1971 and its subsequent recovery have made livestock-guardian dogs an instrument of conservation policy. The Maremma has been distributed to shepherds through wolf-coexistence programmes such as the EU LIFE WolfAlps project and tested in structured field trials against wolf predation.
Working lines, show lines and endangered island breeds
The Maremma studbook is secure (roughly 1,300 pups registered yearly) but faces a plausible, not-yet-measured divergence between working and show/companion lines, against the backdrop of transhumance decline. The island guardians are more fragile: the Fonnese is classified as endangered in the research literature as new registrations slump, and the recently recognised Cane di Mannara remains a small, recovering population.
Genetics vs. geography Peer-reviewed
Modern livestock guarding dogs do not form a single genetic clade. Research identifies two broad lineages — one East Asian and one European/West Asian — with multiple ancient ancestries. Extensive gene flow, shaped by historical pastoral migrations and transhumance, has occurred among guardian breeds across Eurasia, consistent with multiple independent origins rather than a single ancestor.
The Apennine-Italian guardians are unusually well sampled by the standards of livestock-guardian genetics, but the evidence describes ancestry and differentiation — not antiquity or an innate guarding gene. The Maremma-Abruzzese has been directly studied with microsatellites (Palumbo et al. 2018, 179 dogs, 18 markers) and a 170K-SNP selection-signature analysis (Veterinary Sciences, 2023, 158 dogs), which identified genes distinguishing Italian livestock-guardian dogs from Italian herding breeds even within a small geographic area. Crucially, selection signatures locate regions under selection, not lineage age; they do not show that the breed is genetically ancient or that guarding behaviour is genetically proven. In the multi-breed landmark study (Coutinho-Lima et al. 2024) the Maremma falls in the West Eurasian guardian lineage — livestock-guardian dogs are not a single clade — and shows extensive haplotype sharing with regional free-ranging dogs, a genetic fingerprint of gene flow through centuries of transhumance rather than a closed pedigree.
Sardinia's Fonni's Dog is the other well-studied population: a flagship whole-genome study (Dreger et al. 2016) found it a distinct, coherent group whose ancestry points to the Mediterranean and Middle East rather than mainland Italy, carrying population-isolate signatures that parallel the isolated history of Sardinia's human population. A later high-density SNP study (Cortellari et al. 2023) confirmed its unique signature while flagging it as endangered. In Janeš et al. (2021) the Fonnese clustered with the Great Pyrenees (FST ≈ 0.00), which the authors read as a possible historical Sardinia–Iberia pastoral link — a suggested connection, not proof of common descent. Broader genome-wide surveys of Italian breeds (Talenti et al. 2018) likewise find multiple breed-formation routes shaped by regional admixture rather than one ancient stock.
The gaps are large. The Cane di Mannara appears only in comparative microsatellite work; the Cursinu (Corsica), Dogo Sardo and the herding Bergamasco have no peer-reviewed population-genetics studies in the collected sources, and no molecular study supports any unbroken Roman lineage for the Cane Corso or Neapolitan Mastiff. Throughout, breed identity, working role and genetic ancestry are separate questions — the genetics speaks only to ancestry.
Maternal-line (haplogroup) signal

Haplogroups trace a single ancestral line — maternal lineage for mitochondrial DNA, or paternal lineage for Y-DNA. They represent a small portion of a dog's total genetic makeup. A haplogroup assignment does not identify a breed, confirm working role, or establish suitability for livestock guarding. The same haplogroup can appear across many geographically and functionally unrelated dog populations.
Breed ≠ Role ≠ Ancestry
We keep three things separate: what a dog is (breed identity), what it does (working role), and where its genes came from (ancestry). Genetics describes ancestry only — it never certifies working ability, temperament, or breed purity, and geographic origin is not proof of a unique lineage.
