The Landscape Documented
The territory follows a near-continuous mountain chain: the Dinaric Alps and the Slovenian Karst in the northwest, the Šar Planina and Pindus ranges to the south, the Rila–Rhodope–Pirin massifs of Bulgaria and northern Greece, and the great sweep of the Carpathians curving north through Romania into Slovakia and Poland. These uplands share a common pastoral logic — thin, stony soils unsuited to tillage but rich in seasonal grazing — which for centuries supported transhumant flocks driven up to alpine meadows in summer and back to sheltered valleys and plateaus in winter.
Guardian dogs here are tools of that seasonal movement rather than of any single nation. Vlach and Aromanian herders in the central Balkans, Sarakatsani and Karakachan nomads in the Rhodopes and Pindus, and Carpathian shepherds in Romania all worked flocks across mountains that later became international borders, so the dog populations predate — and cut across — the modern breed labels attached to them.
Predators & Threats Documented
Wolf and bear were co-equal predators across the arc; because the Vlach and Karakachan nomads crossed contested political borders, defence against human livestock thieves was as vital as against carnivores.
The Carpathians hold Europe's largest wolf and bear populations, still the primary threat; the Balkan lynx survives critically endangered, and feral dogs persist.
Gray Wolf
The wolf is the guardian's principal adversary across the whole arc, from the Dinarics to the Carpathians, and the Balkan and Carpathian ranges hold some of Europe's densest surviving wolf populations. Breed records describe deterrence and territorial presence — not combat — as the documented protective mechanism.

The "Illyrian" and Yugoslav breed labels
Several Balkan guardians carry historical names — "Illyrian Shepherd Dog" for the Šarplaninac, claims of pre-Roman Illyrian ancestry for the Tornjak — that assert unbroken antiquity. No ancient DNA supports these claims, and the genetics reports flag "Illyrian shepherd dogs are ancient and unchanged" and "Šarplaninac is a pure Yugoslav breed" as common overclaims. The dogs are real working populations; the ancient-purity framing is a naming tradition, not a genetic finding.
Tornjak's dual national claim
The Tornjak was formally recognized as two subtypes, Bosnian-Herzegovinian and Croatian, before unification under a single FCI standard, and its studbook history reflects the politics of two states claiming one mountain dog. Genetic work (Galov et al. 2015; Janeš/Simčič et al. 2021) treats it as a single high-diversity population.
Karst Shepherd as a conservation cautionary tale
The Karst Shepherd of the Slovenian Karst was near extinction in the 1960s–1970s and was rebuilt with documented outside input, including German Shepherd admixture and two introduced Newfoundland males. It now shows low diversity, a single mtDNA haplotype and high inbreeding — a case where documented breed management, not ancient isolation, shaped the modern population.
Genetics vs. geography Peer-reviewed
Modern livestock guarding dogs do not form a single genetic clade. Research identifies two broad lineages — one East Asian and one European/West Asian — with multiple ancient ancestries. Extensive gene flow, shaped by historical pastoral migrations and transhumance, has occurred among guardian breeds across Eurasia, consistent with multiple independent origins rather than a single ancestor.
This region is unusually split between well-studied and unstudied breeds. The three Western Balkan guardians — Šarplaninac, Tornjak and Karst Shepherd — are among the best-documented livestock guardian dogs in Europe, covered by both microsatellite work (Galov et al. 2015; Čeh & Dovč 2014) and a ~107K-SNP study (Janeš/Simčič et al. 2021). That work finds three genetically distinct but related populations: the Šarplaninac with the highest diversity and lowest inbreeding, the Tornjak intermediate, and the Karst Shepherd with low diversity, high inbreeding and documented German Shepherd admixture — the last a conservation concern, not evidence of purity.
The genetics also refute the "ancient, unchanged Illyrian ancestry" narrative. These are distinct modern populations shaped by closed studbooks, twentieth-century bottlenecks (the Šarplaninac was affected by WWII decline and possible past Caucasian Shepherd gene flow) and deliberate breed management, not lineages frozen since antiquity. Livestock guardian dogs as a whole are not a single clade.
Against that, much of the arc is a genuine data gap. The Karakachan has only an indirect proxy — Bulgarian native-dog mtDNA surveys (haplogroups A, B, C, with D2 in mountain shepherd dogs) plus a documented 25 founder-line pedigree — and no confirmed peer-reviewed SNP study of the breed itself. The Greek Shepherd has no breed-specific molecular study at all, and the Romanian breeds (Mioritic, Carpathian, Bucovina, Raven) remain effectively unstudied at the genomic level. For these, honest treatment is to describe them as working landraces or national breeds whose ancestry has not yet been characterized.
Maternal-line (haplogroup) signal

Haplogroups trace a single ancestral line — maternal lineage for mitochondrial DNA, or paternal lineage for Y-DNA. They represent a small portion of a dog's total genetic makeup. A haplogroup assignment does not identify a breed, confirm working role, or establish suitability for livestock guarding. The same haplogroup can appear across many geographically and functionally unrelated dog populations.
Breed ≠ Role ≠ Ancestry
We keep three things separate: what a dog is (breed identity), what it does (working role), and where its genes came from (ancestry). Genetics describes ancestry only — it never certifies working ability, temperament, or breed purity, and geographic origin is not proof of a unique lineage.
