The Landscape Documented
Anatolia is a broad continental plateau ringed and cut by mountains: the semi-arid central steppe around Sivas, Ankara, Aksaray and Konya sits mostly between 900 and 1,300 metres, the Taurus (Toros) ranges wall off the Mediterranean south, and the far northeast around Kars and Ardahan climbs onto a cold high plateau of 1,900 metres and above. Summers are hot and dry, winters long and snowbound — conditions that select for hardy stock and heavily coated dogs, and that shaped a pastoral economy built on Akkaraman sheep and Angora goats.
The guardian dogs of the region are tied to a transhumant system in which flocks graze lowland winter pastures and are driven to high summer pastures (yayla) once the snow clears, penned and guarded overnight against predators. In the Taurus this movement is associated with the Yörük nomadic tradition. Large flock-guarding dogs are described in Anatolian pastoral life over a long span — 17th-century Ottoman accounts such as Evliya Çelebi's Seyahatname mention dogs kept with flocks and spiked collars worn against wolf bites — though these historical mentions cannot be tied directly to any modern standardised breed.
Predators & Threats Documented

Gray Wolf
The gray wolf is the main documented threat to Anatolian flocks and the predator these guardian dogs are most consistently used against. Field and survey work — including a 2024 survey of 368 sheep and goat farms across twelve Turkish provinces — reports guardian dogs as the primary predator defence, with Kangal or Anatolian-type dogs the most common. GPS study of working dogs shows them spatially displacing wolves rather than routinely fighting them; guarding works chiefly by presence, patrol and warning, not by killing.

National-breed status and export control
Turkey treats the Kangal as a national genetic resource: the state agency TİGEM runs a conservation and breeding programme at Karacabey (about 104 Kangals and 102 Akbaş dogs as of 2024), the breed is registered as a geographical indication, and export was restricted by law for decades before a partial relaxation in 2021.
Contested naming and the "Anatolian Shepherd" label
The names are politically loaded. "Anatolian Shepherd Dog" is a Western registry umbrella — assembled abroad from about 1970 — that Turkish authorities do not recognise as a native breed; in 2018 the FCI renamed its Standard No. 331 from "Anatolian Shepherd Dog" to "Kangal Shepherd Dog," while the AKC still uses the Anatolian name. Turkey's kennel authority (KIF) recognises the Kangal, Akbaş and Aksaray Malaklısı, and has stated in writing that no "Turkish Boz Shepherd" breed exists.
Decline of pastoralism and the landraces
Rural depopulation, urbanisation and the settling of nomadic communities are shrinking the working shepherd population that maintains these dogs; a 2024 survey noted that nearly 90% of shepherds in Turkey are now refugees or asylum seekers. The Kangal has become the dominant guardian even within the home range of regional types such as the Kars Dog, which Turkish academic sources classify as endangered.
A borderland of shifting sovereignty
The northeastern Kars region sits on a historic crossroads of Turkish, Armenian and Caucasian pastoralism, passing to Russia under the 1878 Treaty of Berlin and returning to Turkey under the 1921 Treaty of Kars — while sheep and cattle husbandry, and the dogs that guarded it, continued through every political change.
Genetics vs. geography Peer-reviewed
Modern livestock guarding dogs do not form a single genetic clade. Research identifies two broad lineages — one East Asian and one European/West Asian — with multiple ancient ancestries. Extensive gene flow, shaped by historical pastoral migrations and transhumance, has occurred among guardian breeds across Eurasia, consistent with multiple independent origins rather than a single ancestor.
The central genetic lesson of Anatolia is that its guardian dogs must not be collapsed into a single "Anatolian" breed. Independent peer-reviewed studies using different methods converge on this: microsatellite work (Altunok et al. 2005, on 100 canine loci; Erdoğan/Tutkun et al. 2013, on 141 dogs across 17 microsatellites plus protein markers) places the Kangal, Akbaş, Kars Shepherd and Turkish Greyhound in four distinct clusters, and the 2013 study concludes plainly that grouping Turkish shepherd dogs "into a single breed called Anatolian or Turkish shepherd dogs is incorrect." The Kars Dog of the northeast forms its own microsatellite cluster despite resembling the Caucasian Shepherd of the neighbouring Caucasus. The "Anatolian Shepherd" of Western registries is therefore best understood as an umbrella over several genetically distinct populations, not a genetic entity of its own.
The maternal (mtDNA) evidence adds a striking population-history signal without supporting any purity or antiquity claim. Gökçek's 2005 METU thesis (105 Kangal, 9 Akbaş, 585-bp control region) found Kangal and Akbaş to be mtDNA-distinct, and reported that the Kangal carries a rare haplogroup also seen in Scandinavian (~36%) and Portuguese (~20%) dogs but absent from Akbaş, Middle Eastern, East Asian and Indian samples. This is interesting as a signal of an old Southwest Asian/Mediterranean maternal lineage with distant northern connections — but the same reports stress it says nothing about guarding ability, and it cannot be used as a marker of breed purity, since the haplogroup is not geographically unique to Anatolia.
Real gaps remain, and the honest position is to name them. No whole-genome or GWAS study exists for any Turkish guardian breed, and no ancient DNA directly links the modern Kangal or Akbaş to prehistoric Anatolian dogs — the 2026 Nature reports on ~15,800-year-old dogs at Pınarbaşı describe Paleolithic camp dogs, not demonstrable pastoral guardians. The Turkish Boz Shepherd has no peer-reviewed genetic study of any kind, and the Aksaray Malaklısı has only a single microsatellite/mtDNA characterisation of its own population that has never been compared against the Kangal, Akbaş or Kars — so its genetic distinctness from its neighbours, unlike its morphometric distinctness, is untested. More broadly, the largest LGD genomic study to date (Coutinho-Lima et al. 2024, 304 dogs, 36 breeds) found livestock guardians are not one clade but two lineages with multiple ancestries and extensive gene flow driven by transhumance — a frame in which Anatolia's dogs are a shared, interconnected pool rather than isolated ancient bloodlines.

Haplogroups trace a single ancestral line — maternal lineage for mitochondrial DNA, or paternal lineage for Y-DNA. They represent a small portion of a dog's total genetic makeup. A haplogroup assignment does not identify a breed, confirm working role, or establish suitability for livestock guarding. The same haplogroup can appear across many geographically and functionally unrelated dog populations.
Breed ≠ Role ≠ Ancestry
We keep three things separate: what a dog is (breed identity), what it does (working role), and where its genes came from (ancestry). Genetics describes ancestry only — it never certifies working ability, temperament, or breed purity, and geographic origin is not proof of a unique lineage.
