The Landscape Documented
North America is a modern crucible whose working-dog breeds were forged between the 17th and 21st centuries from imported stock — British farm collies, European molossers, hounds and curs — brought by colonists and later settlers and then reshaped for New-World frontier conditions. This is emphatically not an ancient landrace region: the pre-contact dogs of the Americas were themselves an Old-World-derived lineage carried across the Bering land bridge, and ancient-DNA work (Ní Leathlobhair et al. 2018; Leonard et al. 2002; van Asch et al. 2013) shows that population was very largely replaced after European contact. The dogs described here descend from that later wave of imports, not from indigenous American canids.
The pastoral setting is a frontier economy rather than a transhumance system. In the Gulf South and Appalachia, dogs bayed feral hogs and treed game in swamp and hardwood ridge (Catahoula Leopard Dog, Black Mouth Cur, Mountain Cur, Plott Hound); on the Texas range and the Midwest farm, curs and farm collies penned cattle and worked mixed stock (Blue Lacy, English Shepherd, McNab Shepherd); and coastal Newfoundland produced a giant water-and-draught dog rather than a herder. Livestock guarding proper — a dog that bonds to and lives among the flock and deters predators by presence — barely existed as a distinct North American tradition until the late 20th century, which is exactly why the Colorado Mountain Dog, deliberately bred from the 2000s for small mixed farms, is such an honest illustration of a guardian breed being constructed rather than inherited.

The coyote is the ubiquitous ongoing threat to small stock, with the mountain lion and black bear in the West, reintroduced wolves in Colorado, and feral-hog packs in the Southeast.
Coyote
The coyote (Canis latrans) is the defining predator pressure for what little traditional livestock-guarding North America has. The Colorado Mountain Dog's breed record names the coyote as its chief working threat, with mountain lions and bears as the larger, rarer dangers. Coyotes are the predator most modern American producers actually deploy guardian dogs against.

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) was extirpated from most of the contiguous United States and has recolonised or been reintroduced to parts of the northern Rockies, Great Lakes and Southwest. It is a real but geographically limited pressure; on most of the small farms these breeds work, the coyote — not the wolf — is the day-to-day threat.

The mountain lion (Puma concolor) is the principal large cat of the western ranges and is named among the Colorado Mountain Dog's target predators. Historically it was also quarry: hounds such as the Plott were used to tree big cats and bears rather than to guard stock against them — the same role-reversal seen elsewhere in the New World, where big-game dogs hunt the predator rather than shielding the flock from it.

The Colorado Mountain Dog lists the bear among the predators it deters by presence, while the Plott Hound was purpose-bred in the Great Smoky Mountains to trail and bay bears — again illustrating that most North American backcountry breeds engaged predators as hunters, not as flock guardians.

Feral hogs are less a predator of livestock than the defining quarry of the Gulf South's working dogs. The Catahoula Leopard Dog's core historic job was baying feral hogs with a documented "lead-and-lure" technique, and the Black Mouth Cur and American Bulldog worked as bay and catch dogs on the same animal. Proxy studies of wild-boar hunting dogs (Ko et al. 2010; Orr et al. 2019) document the substantial trauma risk of that work.

The Colorado Mountain Dog's strong poultry-safety record and low prey drive were selected precisely for farms that run birds alongside sheep and goats, where ground presence can deter opportunistic raptors — though no breed-specific field study quantifies this.

Merle-associated congenital deafness
The best-documented inherited condition in the region's dogs is merle-linked deafness in the Catahoula Leopard Dog. A BAER study (Strain et al. 2009) tested 54 Catahoulas and found deafness strongly associated with the merle genotype: single-merle dogs were affected at low rates while double-merle (MM) dogs were affected far more often, though still less than double-merles of some other merle breeds. The underlying merle SINE insertion in PMEL17/SILV disrupts cochlear melanocytes (Clark et al. 2006). This is a breed-specific health-genetics finding, not evidence of ancestry or antiquity.
Breed-specific Mendelian disorders in the American Bulldog
The American Bulldog is unusually well characterised for a few inherited disorders pinned to specific mutations in peer-reviewed studies — notably a form of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis and an ichthyosis — for which DNA tests exist. These are documented single-gene health conditions relevant to breeding decisions, and say nothing about the breed's origin story.

Documented, recent breed creation
This crucible's honesty rests on the fact that most of its breeds have recorded founders, dates and registries rather than legends. The Catahoula was named State Dog of Louisiana in 1979 and recognised by the UKC in 1995; the Colorado Mountain Dog is an explicit 2000s breeding project; the Blue Lacy traces to the Lacy family of 19th-century Texas; the King and Shiloh Shepherds are late-20th-century large-shepherd projects. None should be framed as ancient — their studbooks and creation dates are on the record.
Documented non-guardians labelled as guardians
A recurring problem in this region is breeds being marketed or assumed to be livestock guardians when their documented job is hunting, baying, treeing or general farm work. The Catahoula, Black Mouth Cur, Mountain Cur, Blue Lacy, Plott Hound, McNab Shepherd, English Shepherd and Newfoundland are all explicitly characterised in their breed records as territorial watchdogs, herders or hunters — not flock-bonding LGDs. Only the Colorado Mountain Dog was purpose-built for guardian work, and it is candidly a recent construction.

North American breeds run mostly on 20th-century registries — the National Association of Louisiana Catahoulas (1977), UKC and AKC Foundation Stock Service listings, and dedicated breed clubs for the shepherds and curs. These are recent acts of formalisation reflecting frontier working populations only lately written into standards, not inherited landrace institutions.
Genetics vs. geography Documented
Modern livestock guarding dogs do not form a single genetic clade. Research identifies two broad lineages — one East Asian and one European/West Asian — with multiple ancient ancestries. Extensive gene flow, shaped by historical pastoral migrations and transhumance, has occurred among guardian breeds across Eurasia, consistent with multiple independent origins rather than a single ancestor.
The genetics of this region is, honestly stated, almost entirely absent for ancestry purposes — and none of what exists supports antiquity, purity, or a distinct "North American guardian clade." None of the eleven breeds appears in the comprehensive livestock-guardian genomic study to date (Coutinho-Lima et al. 2024), which in any case found guardian dogs are not one clade but carry multiple East-Asian and West-Eurasian ancestries with extensive gene flow. There is no published SNP-array, whole-genome, microsatellite or mtDNA population-structure study for the Catahoula Leopard Dog, the Colorado Mountain Dog, the curs, the reconstructed shepherds, or the Plott Hound; the Catahoula record explicitly flags this as a genuine research gap.
What genetic work exists is breed-specific and clinical rather than ancestral. The merle SINE insertion (Clark et al. 2006) explains the Catahoula's leopard coat and its deafness risk (Strain et al. 2009); the American Bulldog has a small number of well-defined disease mutations; the Blue Lacy and Plott Hound each have only a single or limited breed-specific report. These describe coat and health, not clade placement or antiquity.
The result is a clear negative that fits the region's documentary history. The pre-contact American dog lineage was Old-World-derived and largely replaced after European contact (Ní Leathlobhair et al. 2018; Leonard et al. 2002; van Asch et al. 2013), and the breeds here descend instead from imported British collies, European molossers, hounds and curs recombined on the frontier over the past few centuries. This is ancestry shaped by recent human choices — deliberate crosses, imported foundation stock, and 19th–21st-century standardisation — and it says nothing about breed antiquity, because there is none to claim.
Maternal-line (haplogroup) signal

Haplogroups trace a single ancestral line — maternal lineage for mitochondrial DNA, or paternal lineage for Y-DNA. They represent a small portion of a dog's total genetic makeup. A haplogroup assignment does not identify a breed, confirm working role, or establish suitability for livestock guarding. The same haplogroup can appear across many geographically and functionally unrelated dog populations.
