The American Bulldog is a modern, standardized working Bulldog-type breed from the rural American South, where old-type working Bulldogs survived as farm utility dogs, catch dogs, hog dogs, and property guardians. Its documented core jobs are catch work — holding and pinning rough cattle and feral hogs — together with farm, property, and family protection. The United Kennel Club recognized it in 1999 and places it in the Guardian Dog Group, describing it as "a hog and cattle catching dog, and a protector of personal property."18 It is not a traditional flock-bonding livestock guardian dog: it has no documented history of transhumant pastoral guarding, flock bonding, or open-range predator deterrence, and the available working-dog research places it in a different functional category from breeds such as the Great Pyrenees, Kangal, or Maremma.9 The breed comes in two recognized types — the bulkier Johnson (Classic) and the leaner, more athletic Scott (Standard).
I History & origins Documented
The traditional origin story — repeated across breed-club and registry sources — holds that working Bulldogs came to America with working-class English settlers and survived in the rural South after baiting sports were banned in England in 1835. Primary documentation for this pre-standardization period is very sparse; there are no peer-reviewed historical or archival studies of American working Bulldog populations before the 20th century, and the claim that the type survived "unchanged" for two centuries is breed narrative rather than a documented finding. The breed reportedly passed through a severe population bottleneck near the end of World War II, when it was said to be nearly extinct. Its modern, better-documented history begins around 1970, when Alan Scott and John D. Johnson registered the dogs — first as the "American Pit Bulldog," soon renamed "American Bulldog" to separate it from the American Pit Bull Terrier. Johnson (based in Summerville, Georgia) favored a larger, heavier protection type; Scott emphasized a leaner performance farm-and-hunting type, and their divergence produced the breed's two foundational lines.

II Physical & conformation
Recorded coat is Short (≤2.5 cm). A full physical profile — coat structure and care, climate tolerance, skeletal conformation and sexual dimorphism — is not yet collected for this breed.
III Working role Documented
The American Bulldog's documented working roles come chiefly from registry standards and breed histories rather than field studies. Its primary role is catch work: chasing, catching, and holding by the ears, nose, or neck rough cattle that could not otherwise be handled, and catching and holding feral hogs for hunters and farmers.18 In hog hunting it typically works as the catch dog in partnership with bay dogs such as the Catahoula Leopard Dog or Black Mouth Cur, which find and hold the hog at a distance by barking before the Bulldog moves in. Beyond catch work it served as a general farm utility dog (notably in Florida's "Cracker" cattle-working culture), a property and estate guardian on farms, homesteads, and plantations, a farm watchdog, and — in the modern breed — a family guardian companion.18 There is no documented evidence that American Bulldogs performed true livestock-guardian work in the flock-bonding sense: the breed carries strong catch and prey drive used on stock, works in close partnership with its handler rather than independently at pasture, and guarded against human trespassers and feral dogs rather than deterring wild predators over open range — a profile the working-dog literature treats as distinct from, even opposed to, that of recognized LGD breeds.910
IV Behavioral profile Qualitative
The trait notes below are qualitative descriptions drawn from the UKC breed standard and breed-club sources, not measured scores — no standardized behavioral study (C-BARQ, ATTS, or comparable instrument) has been published for the American Bulldog, which is a genuine research gap.18 The standard describes the breed as "brave and determined, but not hostile… alert and self-confident," typically aloof or standoffish with strangers until maturity, and strongly protective and territorial — a breed developed for confident confrontation in catch and property work, worked in close partnership with its handler rather than independently.18 Because it is a powerful breed with strong catch/prey drive, breed sources consistently stress early socialization, obedience training, and experienced handling.11 Traits without a documented qualitative description are shown as gaps rather than guessed.
V Health Peer-reviewed
The American Bulldog is unusually well characterized for a small number of inherited disorders, which have been pinned to specific mutations in peer-reviewed studies. Genetic testing is available for the two best-defined conditions and is appropriate for all breeding animals:
- Autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis (ARCI) — a skin-cornification disorder causing generalized scaling and redness, visible in puppies as young as 1–2 weeks. It is caused by a frameshift deletion in the NIPAL4 (ichthyin) gene. Among 800 American Bulldogs tested, 34% of clinically healthy dogs were heterozygous carriers (defect-allele frequency ~22%), one of the highest carrier frequencies reported for a serious inherited skin disorder in any working breed.1
- Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, type 10 (NCL10) — a progressive neurodegenerative disease (dysmetria, paraparesis, eventual tetraparesis) with onset at 1–3 years, first described in the breed in 2005 and traced to a G→A mutation in the cathepsin D gene (CTSD).3 The defect allele was found at ~28% in North American test dogs and 8.1% in a European sample; it has not been found in other breeds.24
- Hereditary myotonia — a non-dystrophic muscle disorder linked to a frameshift mutation in the chloride-channel gene CLCN1, confirmed in the breed with autosomal-recessive inheritance.5
- Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) — American Bulldogs were included (though not analyzed as a separate subgroup) in a retrospective study of 71 Bulldog-type dogs with ARVC, in which ventricular arrhythmias occurred in most dogs and median survival after diagnosis was only 4–12 months; the pattern also appears in the closely related English Bulldog. Cardiac screening is warranted.67
- Hip dysplasia and orthopedic disease are widely recognized concerns in this large, high-impact working breed (with elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, cruciate injury, and OCD also cited), but no peer-reviewed breed-specific prevalence study exists — reported figures come from breeder and general dog-care sources and should be treated cautiously. Catch and hog work also carries real physical-injury risk.1617
As a Bulldog-type breed it also carries some brachycephalic-airway risk (greater in the shorter-muzzled Johnson type, though far less than in the English Bulldog), skin-fold dermatitis, and heat sensitivity during work — none yet quantified in a breed-specific peer-reviewed study. Lifespan is commonly cited at about 10–12 years in breed-care sources; there is no peer-reviewed mortality study for the breed. As a proxy, a large UK primary-care study of English Bulldogs found a median longevity of 7.2 years, but that figure describes a different, more exaggerated breed and should not be read directly onto the American Bulldog.8
VI DNA & origin research Qualitative
There is no dedicated peer-reviewed genomic study of American Bulldog population structure, inbreeding, or phylogeny — a significant research gap. The breed was not among the 161 breeds in the large 2017 genomic survey that placed the related English Bulldog in a European-Mastiff cluster, so no formal clade placement for the American Bulldog exists.14 Commercial genomics describes American and English Bulldogs as descendants of the same working English Bulldog stock that have since diverged, but the two are genetically distinct breeds. Proxy work on the English Bulldog documents severe loss of diversity in conformation-selected Bulldog-type populations,12 while broader analysis suggests performance-selected working lines tend to retain more diversity13 — a framework that may bear on Johnson (show/companion) versus Scott (working) lines, though no study has measured this directly.
VII Related & compared breeds Documented
The American Bulldog is most often compared with — and frequently confused with — other Bulldog-type and catch-dog breeds, and it is best understood by contrast with the true livestock-guardian breeds it is not a member of. It shares old working-Bulldog ancestry with the English Bulldog and the American Pit Bull Terrier (from which it was deliberately separated and renamed in 1970), and it was one component in the reconstructed Olde English Bulldogge. As a catch dog it parallels breeds like the Dogo Argentino and Alano Español, and it works alongside bay dogs such as the Catahoula Leopard Dog in hog hunting.
VIII Conservation & status Documented
The American Bulldog is not endangered. It has a robust modern registry infrastructure (UKC, AKC FSS, NKC, ABA, and ABRA with 28,000+ pedigrees), active breed clubs, and a healthy, internationally distributed population:
The breed's main preservation concern is not extinction but the divergence between working and show/companion lines. A growing share of registered dogs are companion, family-guardian, and conformation animals with little working-field experience, and the Johnson/Classic type in particular has been bred toward heavier head and body conformation; the breed community regards working ability as at risk in heavily show-oriented lines. This mirrors the broader pattern in which conformation-selected breeds lose genetic diversity faster than performance-selected working lines.13 The World War II-era founder bottleneck also remains relevant to modern diversity and health-screening needs.
IX Setting the record straight
What we're still learning
Much of what is said about the American Bulldog's deep history is breed-club tradition rather than documented fact: primary records of the pre-standardization southern working Bulldog are very sparse, and the "unchanged for 200 years" narrative is unverifiable. The breed's genuinely strong evidence base is narrow — a handful of peer-reviewed studies that pin specific inherited diseases (ichthyosis, NCL10, myotonia) to exact mutations. Beyond those, there is no peer-reviewed genomic, standardized-behavioral, hip-prevalence, cancer, or mortality study for the breed; most population, temperament, hip, lifespan, and bite-force figures in circulation come from breed-club, commercial, or general-website sources and should be read with that in mind.
