The Alano Español is a Spanish molossoid (mastiff-type) breed, registered by Spain's Real Sociedad Canina de España as Standard No. 406 and classified as a catch, or presa, type.1 Its official standard describes three traditional jobs: catching semi-feral mountain cattle for branding and veterinary work, big-game hunting, and the defence of farms and properties.1 That last role is a genuine estate and farm guarding function, which is why the breed appears here — but it is important to be clear that the Alano is not a traditional flock-bonding livestock guardian. It grips and controls stock rather than living with and bonding to a flock; pastoral flock-guarding in Spain is the work of the Spanish Mastiff and the Pyrenean Mastiff, not the Alano. Near-extinct by the early 20th century, the breed was rebuilt from surviving working dogs in northern Spain from the 1980s onward.2

I History & origins Documented

The breed's name comes from the Alani (Alans), an Iranian nomadic people who reached the Iberian Peninsula in the 5th century CE and are traditionally said to have brought large working dogs. This is an ethnonym-based naming convention common in working-dog traditions; it is not proof of unbroken genetic descent from ancient dogs, and that continuity has never been demonstrated.2 The earliest reliable Iberian textual references to alano-type hunting dogs appear in medieval hunting literature, notably the Libro de la Montería of Alfonso XI in the 14th century. Across the historical record the Alano is documented in cattle catch-and-control work, big-game hunting (boar and deer, historically wolf, lynx and bear as quarry), bull-ring work, farm and property defence, and use as a medieval war dog.2 The breed declined sharply in the late 19th century after the 1883 ban on dogs in the bull-ring, together with the decline of traditional mounted hunting and changes in cattle management; one Spanish source in 1925 declared the "true" Alano already extinct. A recovery effort from the 1980s located surviving working dogs in remote parts of Cantabria, the Basque Country, Castile and León, supported by roughly a decade of morphological and genetic characterization work at the University of Córdoba. The breed is best understood as a modern standardized breed rebuilt from a surviving regional landrace, rather than an unbroken ancient lineage.2

II Physical & conformation

Recorded coat is Short, smooth. A full physical profile — coat structure and care, climate tolerance, skeletal conformation and sexual dimorphism — is not yet collected for this breed.

III Working role Documented

The RSCE standard lists three official uses for the Alano: catching fierce cattle in the mountains for vaccination, branding and driving; big-game hunting; and the defence of farms and properties.1 All three turn on the breed's defining working trait — a strong grip and bite-fixation instinct used to seize and hold cattle or game under a handler's direction. This is fundamentally a catch-dog and hunting profile, and it is behaviorally distinct from the autonomous, flock-bonded, deterrence-based work of a true livestock guardian. Primary sources place no Alano in a transhumant pastoral role; there is no documented connection to Spain's droving routes or the flock-guarding work carried out by the Spanish Mastiff and Pyrenean Mastiff.1 The guarding the Alano genuinely does is fixed-site defence of farms and property, plus, in modern anecdotal use, rural property and family roles. Historical bull-ring use ended with the 1883 ban and does not define the modern breed.

IV Behavioral profile Qualitative

No standardized behavioral or temperament study specific to the Alano Español has been published, so the assessments below are qualitative readings of the RSCE breed standard and consistent descriptive sources — not measured scores.1 The standard describes a breed that is affectionate with its own people, gregarious with other dogs and able to work in teams, but distrustful of strangers, territorial, and driven by a powerful grip and prey instinct; it names unjustified aggression toward people or dogs as an eliminatory fault. Note that flock-bonding is not part of this breed's profile — an important negative finding rather than a low score on a trait it is bred for. Across the wider behavior literature, breed alone is a poor predictor of an individual dog's aggression, while rearing, socialization, sex and training matter more.131518 Traits without a documented qualitative description are shown as gaps rather than guessed.

V Health Qualitative

There is no breed-specific health survey, veterinary epidemiology, inherited-disease screening or mortality study for the Alano Español in the peer-reviewed literature — a confirmed research gap, not evidence that the breed is problem-free. The points below are inferred from morphologically comparable mastiff-type, giant and molossian breeds and should be read as plausible risk profiles only:

  • Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus) is the leading concern flagged by proxy: in a survey of giant breeds, GDV was the most common cause of spontaneous death in mastiff-type dogs (about 30%), and osteosarcoma the most common reason for euthanasia (about 38%).9 As a large, deep-chested molosser the Alano plausibly shares this risk.
  • Shortened lifespan is typical of the molossian body type — large UK and Danish mortality surveys placed molossian-type breeds among the shortest-lived (median around 7 years),1011 and a Bullmastiff study reported a median longevity of about 8.5 years.12 Pet-information sources estimate 11–14 years for the Alano, but no breed-specific mortality data support that figure.
  • Orthopedic disease and cancer (hip and elbow dysplasia, osteochondrosis, osteosarcoma) are general large- and giant-breed risks; hip dysplasia is noted as a concern for the Alano, but no breed-specific screening data have been published.
  • Inbreeding from a small founder base is a plausible concern: the recovery began from roughly 200–300 dogs and the breed carries a documented late-19th-century bottleneck,5 and proxy work on the Bullmastiff shows that recovered mastiff-type breeds with few founders can carry meaningful inbreeding burdens (effective population size around 29–41).8
  • Working injury is an occupational rather than genetic risk — catch and boar-hunting work carries a real risk of wounds from tusks and cattle, though no breed-specific data quantify it.

All of the above is proxy evidence from other breeds. Any claim that the Alano is unusually healthy — or unusually unhealthy — goes beyond what the published record can support.

VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed

Genetic work on the Alano is limited to two microsatellite studies from 1999, each using only four loci — a very small panel by modern standards. A comparison of five Spanish breeds found the Alano showed the greatest genetic distances from every other Spanish breed studied, attributed at least partly to a severe population bottleneck from its near-extinction at the end of the 19th century, with moderate heterozygosity (around 0.70).5 A separate study genotyped 35 Alanos, detected Hardy-Weinberg deviations at two loci suggesting a heterozygote deficit, and identified some potentially breed-specific alleles.6 No SNP-array, whole-genome or admixture study of the Alano exists, so the breed has no modern clade or cluster placement, and there is no genomic test of the popular claims that it descends from ancient Alaunts or is closely related to the Presa Canario, Ca de Bou, Dogo Argentino or Cane Corso. A broader Spanish-breeds analysis also cautions that genetic groupings do not track morphological or historical resemblance, so shared 'presa' looks are not evidence of shared ancestry.7

The Alano is routinely confused with other Spanish and Latin American molossoids; its own registry lists these as separate breeds under separate standards, and no genomic study confirms the ancestry links often claimed for it.17 The two breeds it is most important to distinguish from are the genuine Spanish livestock guardians — the Spanish Mastiff and the Pyrenean Mastiff — which do the pastoral flock-guarding the Alano does not.

VIII Conservation & status Documented

The Alano is a rare, recently recovered breed. No formal FAO or IUCN conservation grade for it was located in the sources, so it is described here by its documented recovery history rather than a categorical status:

By the early 20th century the breed was regarded as effectively extinct. From the 1980s a recovery program rebuilt it from surviving working dogs found in northern Spain, from a founding stock of roughly 200–300 dogs; the ANCAE breed club was constituted in 1995 and the RSCE recognised the breed in 2003–2004.2 By around 2006 an estimated 600–711 Alanos were counted worldwide, and no reliable updated figure has been published since. The documented bottleneck and small founder base mean genetic diversity and inbreeding remain live conservation concerns for the breed.5

IX Setting the record straight

"The Alano is a livestock guardian / flock guardian."
No primary source supports a flock-bonding, predator-deterrence LGD role. The RSCE standard describes cattle-catching, big-game hunting and farm/property defence — grip-based control work, not living with and bonding to a flock. Pastoral flock-guarding in Spain is the job of the Spanish Mastiff and Pyrenean Mastiff.
"It is an unbroken ancient Alaunt breed."
The name comes from the Alani people, but direct genetic continuity from ancient Alaunt-type dogs to the modern standardized breed has never been demonstrated. It is best treated as breed-club tradition, not established fact.

It is an influential breed in Spanish cynological tradition, but no genomic study confirms these ancestry claims; phenotypic and historical resemblance is not proof of genetic affinity.
"Because of its catch/bull history it is dangerous — or, conversely, it is naturally safe with children and strangers."
Neither extreme is supported. No breed-specific temperament data exist, and the wider evidence shows that an individual dog's behavior depends more on rearing and socialization than on breed. A powerful working breed with a strong grip instinct needs experienced, responsible handling.

What we're still learning

Most of what circulates about the Alano Español is tradition and breed-club lore rather than established study. The only systematic research is a small cluster of Spanish work from the late 1990s and 2000s — two four-locus microsatellite genetic studies, morphometric and coat characterizations (68 and 135 dogs), and a historical review — plus the breed's own RSCE standard. There is no modern genomic, health, mortality or behavioral study of the breed; lifespan and health figures come from proxy breeds and pet-information sites, not from the Alano itself. Claims of ancient lineage or of ancestry to other molosser breeds should be read as unverified.
