01 The setting

The Landscape Documented

This crucible spans the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the western Himalayan ranges — among the highest inhabited regions on Earth, where working camps and flocks reach above 4,500 m. It is a cold high-altitude desert of thin air, long winters and short summers, and its guardian dogs sit inside mobile pastoral systems rather than fixed farms. Tibetan and Changpa nomads move camps and herds of yak, sheep and Pashmina goats through the plateau valleys many times a year; Gaddi shepherds of Himachal Pradesh and the Gujjar–Bakarwal herders of Jammu and Kashmir undertake long seasonal migrations, the Bakarwal caravan crossing the Pir Panjal passes on foot over roughly 37 days between winter pastures near Rajouri and summer pastures in the Kashmir Valley.

Across all these systems the documented pattern is consistent: dogs live with the flock and the camp, are watchful at night while herders rest, and deter predators through presence, alarm barking and rushing rather than reliable solo combat. The traditional way of keeping these dogs is contracting under urbanization, the decline of large joint families, reduced dependence on herding, and — in Ladakh and elsewhere — growing populations of roaming feral dogs that both compete with and hybridise with working stock.

Snow leopard

Solitary ambush predator of steep, rocky high-altitude terrain; takes sheep, goats and young yak

The snow leopard is the emblematic high-altitude carnivore of this crucible, and livestock depredation by snow leopards is a well-studied source of human–wildlife conflict across the Ladakhi and trans-Himalayan rangelands (Suryawanshi et al. 2013; Mishra 1997). There is no dedicated snow-leopard page here, so it is filed under apex predators. Guardian dogs are repeatedly recommended as a preferred non-lethal mitigation in this landscape, though field studies assess the pastoral system more often than the dogs by name.

Himalayan / Tibetan wolf

Cursorial pack hunter of open plateau and alpine pasture

Wolves are a primary large-carnivore threat to livestock across the western and trans-Himalaya, alongside the snow leopard (Suryawanshi et al. 2013). On the Tibetan Plateau, ethnographers recorded that nomad dogs were chained by day and released at night specifically to turn back wolves and other predators through deep barking and rushing (Ekvall 1968; Messerschmidt 1983).

Brown bear & Himalayan / Asiatic black bear

Large omnivore; opportunistic raider of camps and flocks

Bears appear consistently in the region's predator lists — the brown bear on the plateau and the Asiatic (Himalayan) black bear in Kashmir's forested protected areas, where it is documented in livestock-conflict studies (Dawood & Bhat 2024). Deterrence, not combat, is the documented guardian-dog function against all of these large carnivores.

Common leopard

Adaptable ambush predator of mid-elevation forest and scrub

At the lower and mid-hill elevations of the seasonal migration, the common leopard is a documented threat to sheep and goats, and non-lethal deterrents including dogs have been studied against leopard attacks in the Himalayan region (Naha et al. 2020). Eurasian lynx

Solitary stalking cat of high alpine and cold-desert terrain

The Eurasian lynx is named among the predators the Changkhi guards against on the Changthang plateau. It is a smaller carnivore than the snow leopard or wolf, and its role in this crucible rests on regional field description rather than breed-specific study.

03 Biological pressure

Endemic Disease & Parasites Qualitative

Rabies

Rabies is specifically documented as a threat to, and cause of death in, Bakharwal working dogs, in a region carrying rabies in both wild and domestic dog populations. Traditional Gaddi management reportedly omits routine vaccination and deworming, making rabies exposure and parasite load real field health concerns rather than measured rates.

Disease from forced altitude confinement

Among Bakharwal dogs, confinement to lower altitudes during the Kashmir insurgency of the 1990s — when herders could not reach high pastures — is documented as a cause of disease and death, a health pressure tied directly to the disruption of transhumance rather than to any inherited condition.

High-altitude hypoxia

The defining environmental pressure of this crucible is thin plateau air. In the Tibetan Mastiff this is the subject of genuine peer-reviewed genomics: the hypoxia genes EPAS1 and HBB carry alleles introgressed from Tibetan gray wolves (likely a deeply diverged, extinct wolf-like lineage) that confer tolerance of low-oxygen conditions (Wu et al. 2014; Wang et al. 2017). This is physiology, not evidence of guardian ability or ancestry. Closely related Himalayan mastiff-type dogs are reported anecdotally to show higher haemoglobin and a single annual oestrus cycle, but whether these traits carry over to breeds such as the Changkhi has not been published.

Cold and endurance load

Long severe winters and constant seasonal movement over high passes place endurance and cold-resilience demands on the region's dogs. The 2026 Gaddi whole-genome study flags variants in muscle-contraction, metabolic, hemostasis and immune pathways that its authors interpret as possible correlates of endurance and cold/altitude resilience — pathway-level inferences from only two individuals, not health measurements.

Geopolitical Pressure Documented

Contraction of Himalayan pastoralism

Across the plateau and ranges, urbanization, the decline of large joint families, reduced dependence on herding and the introduction of exotic livestock breeds are eroding the working role of these dogs. In Ladakh, migration to Leh and abandoned dogs forming feral packs are documented drivers of decline in true working stock.

Kashmir insurgency

The insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir from 1989 is documented as directly harming Bakharwal working dogs: militants reportedly shot dogs to stop alarm barking, and confinement of herders to low altitudes caused fatal disease among dogs kept off their high pastures.

Chinese luxury-market boom and collapse

The Tibetan Mastiff (Zangao) luxury bubble of the 2000s–early 2010s and its collapse around 2013–2015 pulled dogs out of pastoral breeding, drove up size- and ferocity-selected commercial lines diverging from the working landrace, and led to mass abandonment. In China the breed is also listed as a national second-class protected animal.

Indian breed recognition and ownership bans

India's ICAR-NBAGR formally registered the Gaddi Kutta (January 2025) and the Changkhi (April 2025) as indigenous breeds, partly to conserve declining working populations; the Bakharwal remains unregistered and awaiting characterisation. Separately, the Tibetan Mastiff — the closest phenotypic analog to the Changkhi — was placed on India's 2024 list of banned dog breeds, creating real practical and legal considerations for keeping a Changkhi outside its traditional herding setting.

07 Genetics & ancestry

Genetics vs. geography Peer-reviewed

Modern livestock guarding dogs do not form a single genetic clade. Research identifies two broad lineages — one East Asian and one European/West Asian — with multiple ancient ancestries. Extensive gene flow, shaped by historical pastoral migrations and transhumance, has occurred among guardian breeds across Eurasia, consistent with multiple independent origins rather than a single ancestor.

This is a crucible of one heavily studied breed and three barely studied ones. The Tibetan Mastiff has substantive direct genetic evidence — genome-wide SNP and whole-genome work, plus mtDNA — but its scientifically robust finding is high-altitude adaptation via EPAS1/HBB wolf introgression (Wu et al. 2014; Wang et al. 2017). That is physiology only; as the genetics reports stress, altitude-adaptation genes do not demonstrate guardian behaviour, suitability, purity or antiquity, which are entirely separate research questions.

The widely repeated claim that the Tibetan Mastiff is the ancestor of all mastiffs or all guardian dogs is refuted, not merely unproven. The most comprehensive LGD study to date (Coutinho-Lima et al. 2024, 304 dogs across 36 breeds) found that livestock guardian dogs comprise at least two independently evolved modern lineages — one East Asian (with the Tibetan Kyi Apso as the East Asian proxy) and one covering the rest of Eurasia — with multiple ancient ancestries and extensive gene flow via transhumance. Whole-genome analyses also show recent positive selection in the Tibetan Mastiff, which is inconsistent with the folklore of a breed "unchanged for thousands of years."

The three Indian Himalayan breeds are essentially blank on the molecular map. The Gaddi Kutta is a partial exception: a draft whole-genome assembly and phenotypic characterisation exist, and a 2026 resequencing study places it descriptively within a proposed "Himalayan sheepdog complex," but that rests on only two individuals and no comparative population phylogeny — a WGS assembly is not a resolved phylogeny. The Bakharwal has no peer-reviewed genetic study of any kind, and the Changkhi is unsampled by name; the popular claim that either descends from the Tibetan Mastiff is untested. Their genetic relationships to each other and to the Tibetan Mastiff remain unresolved.

Maternal-line (haplogroup) signal

Haplogroups trace a single ancestral line — maternal lineage for mitochondrial DNA, or paternal lineage for Y-DNA. They represent a small portion of a dog's total genetic makeup. A haplogroup assignment does not identify a breed, confirm working role, or establish suitability for livestock guarding. The same haplogroup can appear across many geographically and functionally unrelated dog populations.

Breed ≠ Role ≠ Ancestry

We keep three things separate: what a dog is (breed identity), what it does (working role), and where its genes came from (ancestry). Genetics describes ancestry only — it never certifies working ability, temperament, or breed purity, and geographic origin is not proof of a unique lineage.
