The Landscape Documented
The Alps are a high glaciated mountain chain arcing across western, southern and central Europe, drained by deep valleys and topped by summer pastures — the Alp that gives the range its name. For centuries the dominant pastoral economy here was not sheep-herding against predators but alpine dairying: cattle were driven up to high meadows for the summer grazing season (Alpauftrieb) and back down in autumn (Alpabzug), while milk was worked into cheese in mountain dairies (Sennereien). The word Sennenhund literally means 'the dairyman's dog.'
The dogs the region is known for grew out of this dairy-and-market world rather than from open-range flock defense. The four Swiss Sennenhund breeds (Appenzeller, Bernese, Entlebucher, Greater Swiss) were farmyard multipurpose dogs — droving cattle by heel-nipping and voice, pulling carts of milk and cheese to market, and guarding the homestead against intruders. The Saint Bernard is documented as a mountain-rescue dog of the Great St Bernard hospice, the Leonberger as a mid-19th-century civic and commercial creation from Newfoundland, hospice and Pyrenean crosses, and the Pastore d'Oropa and White Swiss Shepherd as herding/driving and companion types. None is documented as a flock-bonded livestock guardian in the mold of the Mediterranean or steppe LGD breeds.

Wolves were largely exterminated from the Alps by the early 20th century and have recolonized the range since the 1990s, spreading from the Italian Apennines into France, Switzerland and Austria. Their return has renewed interest in flock-protection tools, but this is a recent conservation-era pressure: the Alpine farm breeds cataloged here were developed as drovers, draught dogs and watchdogs, not as anti-wolf flock guardians, and imported LGD breeds are more often used for that role today.

Predator recolonization and flock-protection conflict
The return of wolves, and to a lesser extent bears and lynx, to the Alps since the late 20th century has become a contested political issue, prompting damage-compensation schemes, culling debates and referendums (for example Swiss hunting-law votes) and a renewed policy interest in livestock-guardian dogs — most of which are imported breeds rather than the local Sennenhund types.
Late standardization and national breed identity
The Alpine breeds are products of late-19th and early-20th-century kennel-club standardization. Figures such as Albert Heim consolidated the four Sennenhund breeds from variable regional farm stock in the 1900s; the Leonberger dates to the 1840s. Their identities as fixed, registered breeds are recent civic and cultural constructions, and modern national-heritage framing should not be read as evidence of ancient continuity.
Genetics vs. geography Documented
Modern livestock guarding dogs do not form a single genetic clade. Research identifies two broad lineages — one East Asian and one European/West Asian — with multiple ancient ancestries. Extensive gene flow, shaped by historical pastoral migrations and transhumance, has occurred among guardian breeds across Eurasia, consistent with multiple independent origins rather than a single ancestor.
There is essentially no dedicated livestock-guardian population-genetics for this territory, and that gap is itself the honest headline. The regional syntheses of the guardian-dog genetics literature (covering Western / Southern / Central Europe) name Estrela Mountain Dog, Castro Laboreiro, Maremma-Abruzzese, Spanish Mastiff, Great Pyrenees and Kuvasz as the studied European guardians — none of the Alpine Sennenhund breeds, the Saint Bernard, the Leonberger, the Pastore d'Oropa or the White Swiss Shepherd appears in that guardian-dog evidence base at all. Most of these Alpine breeds are also not livestock guardians in the first place: they are documented as drovers, draught dogs, watchdogs, mountain-rescue dogs or herders.
What genomic work does exist points to recent, tightly bottlenecked closed studbooks rather than deep continuity. Whole-genome sequencing of the Bernese Mountain Dog found very high inbreeding (an ROH-based coefficient near 0.40) and only two mitochondrial haplotypes, both widespread in other breeds; pedigree and genomic analyses of the Entlebucher (effective population size around 162) and the Leonberger (roughly 22 founders, three contributing about 46% of the gene pool) tell the same story of narrow, recently constructed populations. The only place a breed here touches the wider phylogeny is incidental: a mitochondrial study centered on the Tibetan Mastiff grouped several large Western breeds, including the Saint Bernard, as its closest cluster members — but that is shared mtDNA clade co-membership, not evidence of ancestry, working ability or antiquity, and the guardian-dog literature (Coutinho-Lima 2024) is explicit that livestock guardians are not one clade and that no genetic marker has been shown to predict guardian behavior.
In short: for the Alps, geography and documented breed history carry the story, and the genetics — where it exists — describes recent breed-club bottlenecks, not an ancient Alpine guardian lineage.

Haplogroups trace a single ancestral line — maternal lineage for mitochondrial DNA, or paternal lineage for Y-DNA. They represent a small portion of a dog's total genetic makeup. A haplogroup assignment does not identify a breed, confirm working role, or establish suitability for livestock guarding. The same haplogroup can appear across many geographically and functionally unrelated dog populations.
