The Entlebucher Mountain Dog (German: Entlebucher Sennenhund; FCI Standard No. 47) is the smallest of the four Swiss Sennenhund (Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dog) breeds, from the Entlebuch valley in central Switzerland. It is not a livestock guardian dog. Its documented historical jobs were cattle droving (Treibhund) — moving cattle with body pressure, heel-nipping and voice — together with herding and acting as a farmyard watchdog (Wachhund / Hofhund).11 All major registries classify it as a herding / cattle dog: the AKC places it in the Herding Group, and the FCI utilisation statement reads "Driving-, watch-, guard- and farm dog." No source examined documents the breed bonding to and living independently with a flock, deterring large predators, or performing the prey-inhibited flock protection that defines a true LGD.9 It appears here as an honest boundary record — a real Swiss working breed included to mark the edge of guardian-dog coverage. It is genetically fragile (a closed studbook with a small effective population) and carries several well-studied heritable diseases.
I History & origins Documented
The breed comes specifically from Entlebuch, a valley in the region of Cantons Lucerne and Bern — a pre-Alpine dairy-farming landscape of small mountain farms and seasonal grazing, not a high-Alpine transhumance corridor with heavy predator pressure. The name Sennenhund literally means "the Alpine dairyman's dog" (Senne = Alpine dairy farmer): these were the dogs of the herdsmen who drove cattle up to summer pastures and back and who managed the farmyard. The first written mention of an "Entlibucherhund" — a small cattle dog from around Lucerne and Bern — dates only to 1889, and until 1913 no consistent distinction was drawn between Entlebucher and Appenzeller cattle dogs. The type was formalised through the Swiss geologist and Sennenhund advocate Prof. Albert Heim; older claims of Roman-Molosser or two-thousand-year continuous ancestry are breed-club lore with no archaeological, genetic or archival support, and the FCI standard gives no origin date beyond 1889.11 As a fully standardised, closed-studbook breed it is phenotypically consistent and should not be described as a landrace.

II Physical & conformation
Recorded coat is Short double, tricolour. A full physical profile — coat structure and care, climate tolerance, skeletal conformation and sexual dimorphism — is not yet collected for this breed.
III Working role Documented
The Entlebucher's core historical job was cattle droving (Treibhund): moving cattle along mountain paths, between pastures and to and from summer Alpine grazing, working by body contact, heel-nipping and voice in a heeler / drover style compared to Corgis and Australian Cattle Dogs. Secondary roles were herding (Hütehund), farm watchdog (Wachhund) and general farmyard dog (Hofhund) — alerting the household to strangers by presence and bark.11 This is behaviourally the opposite of livestock guardian work. A droving dog is selected for drive, physical boldness and voice and actively moves stock under or alongside human direction; a livestock guardian suppresses prey drive, bonds to the stock, stays with it unsupervised and deters predators. The behavioural literature draws exactly this line, and it cannot be crossed by training.9 No source examined documents the Entlebucher flock-bonding, guarding pasture overnight, or confronting wolves or bears. Its farmyard watchdog function is real and historically documented, but it is an alert-and-alarm role — "incorruptible watchdog, slightly suspicious of strangers" in the FCI standard — not independent predator deterrence. Traditional cattle work has largely disappeared with mechanised agriculture; herding-instinct is still testable and modern use is mostly companionship, herding trials, agility, and search-and-rescue.
IV Behavioral profile Qualitative
No independent, peer-reviewed temperament or behaviour study specific to the Entlebucher was found; the assessments below are qualitative, drawn from the FCI standard, the Swiss SKES Ankörung breeding-suitability test, and experienced-owner accounts, and are shown as gaps where no assessment exists.11 The FCI standard describes the ideal as "lively, high-spirited, self-assured and fearless; good-natured and devoted towards people familiar to him, slightly suspicious of strangers; cannot be bribed as a watchdog," with aggressive or overly shy dogs disqualified. The key point for a guardian encyclopedia is that this breed's stock behaviour is active herding / droving drive — it moves and controls livestock — not the prey-inhibited flock-bonding of an LGD, and its watchfulness is farmyard alarm rather than predator confrontation.9
V Health Peer-reviewed
The Entlebucher has an unusually rich body of breed-specific veterinary research for such a numerically small breed, driven by the high prevalence of serious heritable conditions and the engagement of Swiss and German veterinary faculties:
- Ectopic ureters (EU) are the breed's signature heritable disease. A study of 565 Entlebuchers across Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands found only 32.9% had normal ureteral terminations, 47.3% had intravesicular ectopic terminations and 19.8% the severe extravesicular form, whose heritability was estimated at about 0.65.1 A genome-wide association study mapped six loci (chromosomes 3, 17, 27, 30).2 An international multi-club screening programme (mandatory in Germany from 2009) and selective mating have since reduced its prevalence.3 The condition is also documented in North American dogs.4
- Inherited eye disease is a heavy burden. An examination of 276 Entlebuchers found progressive retinal atrophy (rod–cone degeneration) in roughly a quarter of dogs and posterior polar cataract in a large share, plus glaucoma in a few percent.5 A later prevalence and heritability analysis reported cataract around 23.5% and PRA around 11.9%; PRA is autosomal-recessive (prcd) with a DNA test available, while a posterior-polar-cataract region has been fine-mapped to chromosome 1 without a confirmed causative gene.6
- Reduced litter size and inbreeding depression. A peer-reviewed pedigree study found the mean annual litter inbreeding coefficient rose from about 0.37 (1986) to 0.40 (2013), with higher dam inbreeding and greater parental age significantly reducing litter size and puppy survival; a GWAS additionally linked GDF9 variants to smaller litters.7
- Congenital bobtail. A naturally short tail (Stummelrute) is an ancestral breed trait carried on the T-gene (C189G) mutation; heterozygotes have a short tail, while homozygosity is lethal in the embryo, reducing litter sizes in bobtail × bobtail matings.8
- Orthopedic and other conditions. Hip dysplasia is described as polygenic and screened by all major clubs — the North American club reports roughly 80% of OFA-evaluated dogs passing (implying about 20% affected among tested dogs); elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation and cranial cruciate ligament rupture are also screened or noted, and genetic-health summaries additionally list CDDY-linked intervertebral disc disease and rare muscular dystrophy (a DMD-gene duplication reported in two males).
Reported lifespan is around 12 to 15 years (12–14 in German-language sources) — relatively long for a Sennenhund, consistent with a lower cancer burden than its close relative the Bernese Mountain Dog. Breed-club guidance also excludes dogs with heart murmurs from breeding as a precaution against heritable cardiac disease.
VI DNA & origin research Documented
There is no whole-genome phylogenetic study placing the Entlebucher relative to other breeds; what is well documented is a severely bottlenecked closed studbook. A 2015 pedigree-based analysis (Institute of Canine Biology, on data from the US club NEMDA) reported an effective population size of about 162 — far below the ~1,000 regarded as sustainable — a founder-genome equivalent of only about 4.8 dogs, an average mean kinship of 38.8% (higher than that between full siblings), and only about 6% of the reproductive population having produced offspring.10 Peer-reviewed pedigree work confirms rising litter inbreeding across 1986–2013.7 The breed is genomically distinct from true LGD (molossoid flock-guardian) lineages and is grouped by the FCI in Group 2, Section 3 (Swiss Mountain & Cattle Dogs), separate from both the herding group and the LGD-relevant sections.9
VII Related & compared breeds Documented
The Entlebucher is one of four Swiss Sennenhund breeds and is most often compared with — and historically confused with — its relatives. The closest boundary is with the Appenzeller Sennenhund, from which it was not officially separated until 1913. It shares cattle-droving ancestry with the Rottweiler, and it is regularly grouped with the larger Greater Swiss and the long-haired Bernese. All are cattle / farm / draft breeds, none a livestock guardian.
VIII Conservation & status Documented
The Entlebucher is not endangered by headcount, but it is a genetically fragile closed-studbook breed. Its conservation challenge is diversity and disease, not numbers:
A global pedigree database holds roughly 17,700 dogs across the breed's entire recorded history, distributed mainly across Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, the United States and Great Britain, whose clubs coordinate health testing internationally. The strain of selecting simultaneously against ectopic ureters, PRA, cataract and hip dysplasia within so small a gene pool is the central concern; the FCI and kennel clubs have historically refused outcrossing, and that debate remains unresolved.10 Active multi-country screening programmes (EU, PRA, cataract, HD) represent best-practice management, and the Swiss SKES Ankörung keeps behavioural-stability and working temperament in the breeding requirements — so despite the decline of traditional Alpine cattle droving, working character remains formally evaluated. The breed has undergone less show-line divergence than the more popular Bernese, largely because its lower international popularity has kept breeding closer to functional stock.
IX Setting the record straight
What we're still learning
For a livestock-guardian encyclopedia the honest conclusion is that the Entlebucher is a documented non-guardian: a Swiss cattle-droving, herding and farm-watchdog breed included to mark the boundary, not a flock-protection dog. Its health and population genetics are unusually well established for a rare breed — ectopic ureters, inherited eye disease and inbreeding depression rest on peer-reviewed, breed-specific studies — while its behaviour has no independent peer-reviewed study, no whole-genome phylogenetic analysis has placed it among the Sennenhunds, and its ancestry before 1889 cannot be verified from the record. Where a claim could not be sourced, it is left as a gap rather than guessed.
