The Rottweiler is a large, standardized German working breed whose historical job was cattle droving — moving herds to market for butchers and cattle traders around the town of Rottweil — together with guarding its owner's money and goods and pulling carts of butchered meat. It is a genuine property, farm and personal guardian, and from 1910 one of the first breeds recognised as a police dog in Germany.1 It is not a traditional livestock guardian dog: it has no documented history of bonding with sheep or goat flocks, of independent flock guarding across open range, or of the low prey drive and passive flock integration that define recognised LGD breeds. Guardians.dog lists it as a documented non-LGD guardian — a drover's, butcher's and property-protection breed — so its story is told honestly rather than folded into the livestock-guardian type.
Name & origin Documented
The breed name is a plain toponym: Rottweiler means simply "Rottweil dog," the German suffix -er marking origin in the town of Rottweil. Its older working alias Metzgerhund parses morphologically as Metzger (butcher) plus Hund (dog) — literally "butcher's dog" — naming the trade the breed served rather than any place. Regional German cynology traces the underlying type to an earlier South-German farm dog, the Saupacker or Sauenhund ("sow-catcher" / "pig-guardian dog"), built from Sau (sow; Old High German sū, Proto-Germanic *sūwō) with Packer, a gripping dog. The naming pattern is therefore doubly occupational and local — a place, a trade, and the gripping farm work these dogs actually did — with no folkloric or heroic element.
I History & origins Documented
The breed takes its name from Rottweil, a market town in Baden-Württemberg in south-western Germany that grew from the Roman settlement of Arae Flaviae and later became a regional cattle-trading centre. Its working identity is inseparable from that specific commercial livestock economy — the cattle market, the butcher trade and the droving culture — rather than from pastoral sheep or goat husbandry.1 Direct primary sources for the pre-modern working type are largely absent; the medieval and early-modern history is documented mainly through later breed-club historiography, not contemporaneous agricultural or government records, and no archaeological or manuscript evidence for the specific Rottweiler type has been identified. When railways and legal restrictions ended open cattle droving in the mid-19th century the type nearly died out — famously reduced to a single poor specimen shown at Heilbronn in 1882 — before being revived through police-dog utility in the early 20th century.

II Physical & conformation
Recorded coat is Double, short. A full physical profile — coat structure and care, climate tolerance, skeletal conformation and sexual dimorphism — is not yet collected for this breed.
III Working role Documented
The Rottweiler's documented historical roles are integrated commercial working tasks: driving cattle to and from market using body pressure and nipping; guarding the owner, money pouches and property at cattle markets and on butcher expeditions; and carting loads of butchered meat. The FCI/ADRK standard summarises its historical task as "the driving and guarding of the herds of cattle and the defence of their masters and their property."1 This is a drover's, farm and property/market-guardian function, extended in the modern era into police, protection sport (IGP/Schutzhund), military, search-and-rescue and family-guardian work. It is expressly not a flock-bonding livestock guardian role: there is no documented history of guarding sheep or goat flocks, no evidence of transhumant pastoral use, and modern anecdotes of Rottweilers coexisting with farm stock are not equivalent to breed-purpose LGD status.
IV Behavioral profile Peer-reviewed
The trait table below applies the standard livestock-guardian frame to a breed that is not an LGD — so it reads as much for what is absent as for what is present. The FCI standard describes the ideal Rottweiler as "good-natured, placid in basic disposition, very devoted, obedient, biddable and eager to work… self-assured, steady and fearless," reacting to its surroundings "with great alertness," with anxious, shy, vicious or nervous animals disqualified.1 This is a handler-focused guardian, the opposite of the independent, self-directing LGD. Peer-reviewed work adds nuance: a temperament principal-component study concluded that aggression toward people in the breed is strongly motivated by fear,12 a UK primary-care study found aggression the most commonly recorded disorder (males predisposed over females),5 and an owner survey found training frequency associated with less fear, aggression and disobedience.13 Temperament is therefore management-dependent; traits without a documented assessment are shown as gaps rather than guessed.
V Health Peer-reviewed
The Rottweiler is one of the better-studied breeds for inherited disease, and the picture is serious: cancer, orthopedic disease and inherited neurological disorders dominate. The ADRK operates one of the most stringent mandatory breeding systems of any club, requiring hip and elbow certification, cardiac screening, a temperament test and a working title before a dog may breed.1
- Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) is the breed's signature health concern — among the highest breed-specific predispositions of any dog. The AKC Canine Health Foundation has estimated 10–15% of Rottweilers develop it and UFAW 5–12%, with a mean diagnosis age around eight years and near-total mortality without successful treatment;7 large-breed genetic studies put the breed at more than ten times the odds of crossbreds and identified associated genomic regions.8
- Cancer overall is the leading cause of death: a UK primary-care study recorded neoplasia in 33.0% of Rottweiler deaths, and a pedigree cancer study found the breed roughly 2.1× overrepresented for dying of cancer (osteosarcoma, histiocytic sarcoma and lymphoma the main types).5
- Hip and elbow dysplasia are primary breeding screens; a large multi-breed Italian study estimated hip-dysplasia prevalence and genetic parameters with the Rottweiler among the breeds surveyed.6
- Cruciate-ligament and joint disease are strongly linked to early neutering: a UC Davis dataset found dogs neutered before one year up to three times as likely to develop a joint disorder,9 and a Rottweiler-specific cohort found gonad removal within the first 24 months associated with more than four times the cruciate-rupture incidence and far higher bilateral-rupture risk.10
- Cardiac disease — the breed is listed among those predisposed to subaortic stenosis, and mitral dysplasia is also reported; the ADRK mandates cardiac screening. No direct Rottweiler cardiac-prevalence study was located, so no percentage is stated here.
- Inherited neurological disorders. JLPP (juvenile laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy), a fatal autosomal-recessive disease from a RAB3GAP1 deletion, has onset around three months; one tested cohort reported roughly 15.1% carriers and 0.4% affected, and a DNA test exists. LEMP (leukoencephalomyelopathy, a NAPEPLD insertion) showed about 7.1–8% carriers in tested Rottweilers. A Rottweiler-variant neuroaxonal dystrophy (VPS11) is also described.
- Longevity and neutering. A UK study found median longevity of 9.0 years (females 9.5, males 8.7);5 an Australian study of 7,185 dogs found intact animals lived about 1–1.5 years longer than neutered ones, and an Aging Cell analysis found females whose ovaries were removed after age six were 4.6× as likely to reach 13 as those spayed young.11
Other recorded conditions include entropion/ectropion (a disqualifying fault), obesity and otitis externa, both among the most common disorders in the UK study. As a large, deep-chested breed the usual bloat (GDV) risk also applies.
VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed
Detailed genomic characterisation of the Rottweiler is relatively recent. A genome-wide population-structure analysis of many breeds recorded the Rottweiler with a high inbreeding coefficient and one of the highest counts of associated inherited disorders (32) among breeds studied,2 and a UK population study likewise found the Rottweiler among the breeds with the highest inbreeding.3 A separate SNP analysis grouped the Rottweiler with the Bernese mountain dog, flat-coated retriever and golden retriever as breeds sharing susceptibility to soft-tissue cancers.4 No study has tested the popular Roman-drover-dog ancestry claim through ancient DNA or phylogenomics.
VII Related & compared breeds Documented
The Rottweiler is regularly confused with, or linked to, several other large working breeds — some by shared development, some only by shared appearance or FCI grouping. Its closest documented genetic relative is the Great Dane; the Doberman Pinscher and the Black Russian Terrier were both partly developed from Rottweiler stock (the latter sharing the JLPP founder mutation). It is not a livestock guardian, so true LGD breeds are functionally distinct rather than close relatives.
VIII Conservation & status Documented
The Rottweiler is not a numbers-based conservation concern; it is one of the most abundant purebred dogs in the world:
At its mid-1990s peak the Rottweiler was reportedly the most-registered AKC breed, and it still ranked around eighth most popular in the US as of 2017. The German ADRK maintains a closed studbook with mandatory health and working requirements under the motto "Rottweiler breeding is working-dog breeding." The real conservation problem is genetic-health, not scarcity: a high inbreeding coefficient, a heavy burden of inherited disease (osteosarcoma, JLPP, LEMP, subaortic stenosis),2 and a widely discussed but formally unquantified working-line/show-line divergence. The breed is also a frequent target of breed-specific legislation — reportedly the second most-cited breed in US ordinances after pit-bull types — a legal context that says more about public policy than about individual dogs.

What we're still learning
Much of the Rottweiler's pre-20th-century story is breed-club historiography rather than primary record, and the Roman-ancestry claim remains untested by genomics. Several research gaps remain: no study comparing working, show, protection and companion lines on behaviour, structure or health; no dedicated Rottweiler cardiac-disease study; and the specific genetic basis of JLPP in the breed is not fully established in the literature reviewed. Where sources give no figure, none is stated here.
