The Landscape Documented
This crucible groups four native dogs of East and Southeast Asia that share a region but not a job. The Shikoku Inu comes from the wet, forested mountains of Kōchi Prefecture on Shikoku Island, where matagi hunters kept it for wild boar. The Thai Ridgeback is a hunting and home-watchdog breed of the tropical coastal provinces of eastern Thailand, and the Thai Bangkaew a white spitz property-and-boat guardian from the Yom River lowlands of Phitsanulok. The Bắc Hà is a spitz-type homestead guardian and pack-hunter of the H'Mông in the cool, humid limestone highlands of Lào Cai in northwest Vietnam.
What unites the region is the absence of the pastoral setting that produces livestock guardian dogs. Eastern coastal Thailand, the central Thai lowlands, riverine Vietnam, and mountainous Shikoku have no tradition of large grazing flocks or seasonal herd movement. The documented systems here are smallholder mixed farming with penned buffalo and cattle, orchard and paddy-field cultivation, riverside village life, and forest hunting. Where these dogs guard, they guard the compound, the boat, the house, and the pen — not a flock bedded down on open pasture. They are best understood as hunting dogs and home-and-yard watchdogs, and are included as honest boundary records because they are frequently, but wrongly, grouped with guardian breeds.
Predators & Threats Qualitative
In Japan the Japanese wolf and black bear — and crop-raiding deer and boar — shaped the mountain village dog; in Thailand and Vietnam the threats were tiger, leopard and dhole, plus theft of livestock and fighting dogs.
The Japanese wolf is extinct; the black bear persists on Shikoku. In Southeast Asia tiger and leopard survive only in protected fragments, while dhole and feral dogs remain.
Bengal Tiger
The tiger was historically present across the forests of mainland Southeast Asia, including Thailand and northern Vietnam. It is a genuine regional apex predator, but the retrieved breed records contain no account of any of these dogs bonding with a flock and deterring tigers at pasture. Their hunting and guarding is home-and-yard and forest-quarry in scope, not flock defence, so the tiger is listed here as regional wildlife context rather than as a documented adversary of a guarding role.

There is no dedicated leopard or snow-leopard page on this site, so the leopard is filed under apex predators and named here. Leopards range through forested and hill country in Thailand and northern Vietnam and readily take domestic dogs. As with the tiger, however, no source in the breed records documents these dogs working as flock guardians against leopards; the encounter risk is that of any free-ranging village or hunting dog, not evidence of a livestock-guarding role.

The dhole (Asian wild dog, Cuon alpinus) is the region's native pack-hunting canid and appears in local folklore — H'Mông tradition tells of a sói lửa (dhole, "fire wolf") mating with village dogs to produce the first red Bắc Hà pups. That is oral tradition, and no genetic evidence supports dhole hybridisation; Y-chromosome testing of the Thai Bangkaew, for instance, shows an ordinary domestic-dog paternal ancestor clearly divergent from dhole and jackal. The dhole is listed as regional wildlife under apex predators, not as a documented predator that these dogs were bred to guard flocks against.

Tick-borne blood parasites (regional disease ecology)
A survey of free-roaming Thai dogs found Babesia, Ehrlichia, and Hepatozoon infections (Paladsing et al., 2024). This reflects the local disease ecology that any free-ranging dog in the region is exposed to — including a free-roaming Thai Ridgeback — rather than a breed-specific trait.
Dermoid sinus (ridge-linked, Thai Ridgeback)
The same duplication of genetic material that produces the dorsal ridge also predisposes ridged breeds to dermoid sinus, a congenital tube-like skin defect along the midline of the back (Hillbertz et al., 2007). A 2022 case report describes two sacro-coccygeal dermoid sinuses in a young Thai Ridgeback, surgically treated with a favourable outcome. This is a shared-ancestry ridge trait, also seen in the Rhodesian and Phu Quoc ridgebacks.
Humid-climate skin and heat problems (Thai Bangkaew)
Skin hot-spots and otitis externa are linked to the Bangkaew's dense double coat in a humid climate, and heatstroke sensitivity is noted. These are owner-reported concerns compiled in breed-club guidance, not veterinary epidemiology; no disease-prevalence surveys exist for the breed.
Rabies (endemic, public-health context)
Rabies is endemic across Southeast Asia. In the Bắc Hà district of Vietnam, a per-dog vaccination "passport" programme has been issued from 2024 onward. This is public-health administration and regional context, not a breed-specific health finding.
Climate & Terrain Pressure Qualitative
Tropical heat and monsoon humidity
Central and eastern Thailand and coastal Vietnam are hot and monsoonal. Heat and humidity drive the skin, ear, and overheating concerns noted for the double-coated Thai Bangkaew, and shape the free-ranging, hunting-and-watch lifestyle of the region's dogs. This is qualitative environmental context rather than a measured climate-adaptation study.
Cool humid montane highlands (Lào Cai)
The Bắc Hà's home on the limestone "White Highlands" at roughly 1,000–1,500 m is cool and humid. Vietnamese media assert the double-coated dog is adapted to this montane climate, but that adaptation is not clinically documented and is treated here as a qualitative claim.
Wet temperate island mountains (Shikoku)
The Shikoku developed in the rugged, wet interior mountains of Kōchi Prefecture. Poor access to the deep Ishizuchi range is credited with keeping the Hongawa strain relatively isolated. This is documented breed history rather than a formal climate study.

Geopolitical Pressure Documented
Native-breed nationalism and kennel-club recognition
Each of these breeds sits inside a national native-dog project. Japan designated the Shikoku a national Natural Monument in 1937 and preserves it chiefly through the registry NIPPO. Thailand's Ridgeback (FCI 2003) and Bangkaew (FCI provisional 2011, definitive 2022) became the country's internationally recognised breeds. Vietnam frames the Bắc Hà as one of the tứ đại quốc khuyển ("Four Great National Dogs") and recognised its standard only in 2019. Modern breed recognition reflects cultural and institutional decisions, not evidence of guarding ability or antiquity.
Decline of working roles
The working functions here are eroding. The Shikoku's hunting use declines as the number of Japanese hunters falls, and preservation sources warn the Nihon-ken are increasingly bred for show. The Thai Bangkaew's founder-era sharpness was deliberately softened from around 1995 to suit the pet market. Cross-breeding and landrace erosion
Cross-breeding with the general village-dog pool is a recurring conservation concern — Vietnamese agricultural press notes truly purebred Bắc Hà stock is hard to find, and Thai researchers flag appearance-driven selection and the lack of systematic pedigree management as future risks. These are documented conservation concerns rather than at-risk register listings; none of the four carries a formal FAO/DAD-IS or IUCN status.
Genetics vs. geography Peer-reviewed
Modern livestock guarding dogs do not form a single genetic clade. Research identifies two broad lineages — one East Asian and one European/West Asian — with multiple ancient ancestries. Extensive gene flow, shaped by historical pastoral migrations and transhumance, has occurred among guardian breeds across Eurasia, consistent with multiple independent origins rather than a single ancestor.
East and Southeast Asia holds the highest mitochondrial and Y-chromosome diversity of any dog region, and this is the zone repeatedly proposed as the primary domestication origin (Savolainen et al. 2002; Pang et al. 2009, "south of the Yangtze"). That is a domestication-origin signal for dogs as a whole — it is not proof that any of this region's breeds is an ancient guardian, a distinct clade, or a working livestock dog. The four breeds here fall within that broad, diverse regional village-dog pool, not in an isolated ancient lineage.
The evidence class varies by breed. The Thai Ridgeback and Thai Bangkaew have the most direct study: microsatellite and mtDNA work reports healthy diversity and low inbreeding with no bottleneck signal (attributed to owners exchanging breeding animals), and Y-chromosome (ZFY) sequencing of Bangkaew males finds an ordinary domestic-dog paternal ancestor, not a jackal or dhole cross (Zhang et al. 2020; Phavaphutanon & Laopiem 2011; Boonyaprakob et al. 2017). Both are recently reconstructed, standardised breeds, and no study places either in a named clade of its own. The Bắc Hà rests on a single small mtDNA panel (15 dogs, 11 haplotypes in haplogroups A and B; Trần et al. 2019) plus a broader Vietnamese survey placing it in the northern mainland pool (Thai et al. 2023); it lacks the rare East Asian haplogroup E of the Phu Quoc dog. The Shikoku has no study of itself as a distinct clade — only proxy work on Japanese native dogs, which could not be cleanly separated into distinct breed clades (Okumura et al. 2009), alongside Jōmon-period ancient DNA from Shikoku Island showing a genuinely old Japanese-dog substrate whose survival in the modern breed is unmeasured.
Critically, none of these four breeds is a livestock guardian, and none was sampled in the guardian-dog genomics literature. The landmark LGD study (Coutinho-Lima et al. 2024) identifies an East Asian guardian lineage, but its exemplar is the Tibetan Kyi Apso / Tibetan Mastiff group — not the Japanese, Thai, or Vietnamese village and hunting dogs here. There is no peer-reviewed guardian-genetics evidence for any breed in this crucible, and none is claimed.
Maternal-line (haplogroup) signal

Haplogroups trace a single ancestral line — maternal lineage for mitochondrial DNA, or paternal lineage for Y-DNA. They represent a small portion of a dog's total genetic makeup. A haplogroup assignment does not identify a breed, confirm working role, or establish suitability for livestock guarding. The same haplogroup can appear across many geographically and functionally unrelated dog populations.
Breed ≠ Role ≠ Ancestry
We keep three things separate: what a dog is (breed identity), what it does (working role), and where its genes came from (ancestry). Genetics describes ancestry only — it never certifies working ability, temperament, or breed purity, and geographic origin is not proof of a unique lineage.
