01 The setting

The Landscape Documented

This crucible groups three widely separated island archipelagos — the Canaries and Balearics (Spain) and the Azores (Portugal) — that share one decisive feature: none of them has any large wild predator. There are no wolves, bears or big cats on any of these islands, and there never were in the era that shaped their dogs. As a result, the working dog types that developed here were not the flock-bonded, predator-defending livestock guardians of the mainland mountains. They were droving and catch dogs for cattle, goat-herding and round-up dogs, butchers' grip dogs, and farm, estate and property guards. Selection pressure came from terrain, heat and aridity, the handling of semi-wild stock, and human threats — theft, intruders and, in the harbours, pirates — rather than from wildlife.

The islands were settled and stocked over centuries of Atlantic and Mediterranean expansion: the Castilian conquest of the Canaries from 1402, the Aragonese conquest of Mallorca in 1230, and the Portuguese settlement of the Azores from the mid-15th century, with dogs arriving alongside settlers, soldiers and the crews of ships that used the islands as ocean staging points. Local economies built around goats on Fuerteventura and La Palma, dairy cattle on Terceira and São Miguel, and mixed stock and estates on Mallorca produced dogs matched to those jobs. Several of these breeds — the Presa Canario, the Ca de Bou (Perro de Presa Mallorquín), the Perro Majorero and the Garafian Shepherd — collapsed to remnant populations in the 20th century and were reconstructed from small founder bases in the 1970s and 1980s, so their modern form is recovered rather than continuous.

Heat and aridity (Canaries)

The Canary breeds, and the Perro Majorero of arid Fuerteventura in particular, are traditionally described as adapted to a hot, dry, volcanic environment — a broad, deep chest, tough foot pads for stony ground, jumping ability for the island's dry-stone walls, and reported tolerance of heat and water deprivation. These are qualitative descriptions drawn from breed standards and owner accounts rather than clinical or physiological studies.

Conquest, settlement and Atlantic shipping

The islands' dog populations arrived with waves of settlement: Iberian catch dogs (perros de presa) reached the Canaries with Castilian settlers after 1402, mastiff-type dogs are said to have reached Mallorca around the 1230 Aragonese conquest (and later crossed with British dogs during the 18th-century occupation), and the Azores were stocked from the mid-15th century by Portuguese settlers and the French, English, Dutch and Spanish crews who used the islands as an Atlantic staging point. These settlement narratives are documented in outline but the specific ancestry claims attached to them are largely tradition rather than genetically tested history.

Council ordinances against loose catch-dogs

Municipal-council records are among the best primary evidence for these dogs — and they describe a nuisance, not a protector. From the early 1500s, Cabildo ordinances on Tenerife and Fuerteventura record perros de presa and perros de ganado being restricted, leashed or killed because they injured sheep and goats. This documentary record directly contradicts the modern marketing of several of these breeds as flock guardians.

Blood-sport bans and 20th-century near-extinction

Two of the region's molossoids were defined by blood sports and nearly destroyed by their prohibition. The Ca de Bou (Perro de Presa Mallorquín) was a bull-baiting and fighting dog whose population collapsed after bull-baiting (1883) and dog fighting (1940) were banned, and it was rebuilt from a few survivors in the 1980s using the Ca de Bestiar and some Bulldog. The old Canarian presa type faded to near-extinction by the early 20th century, surviving mainly through an informal fighting subculture, before the modern Presa Canario was reconstructed from the 1970s onward from local and imported stock.

Modern recognition and heritage status

Most of these breeds were formalised only recently and are now managed as regional heritage. On 16 June 2025 the Canarian government declared the Presa Canario, Perro Majorero, Podenco Canario and Pastor Garafíano patrimonio genético of the Canary Islands; the Ca de Bou is listed as a vulnerable Spanish breed by the RSCE (roughly 243 registered); the Azorean cattle dogs are managed under an Azores regional conservation programme; and the Balearic breeds are supported through the island agricultural-research institute (IRFAP). Heavy exports — the Ca de Bou to the US, Russia, Poland and Japan in the 1990s, the Presa Canario to Poland, the Barbado da Terceira to the US — have also dispersed several breeding bases away from their home islands.

07 Genetics & ancestry

Genetics vs. geography Documented

Modern livestock guarding dogs do not form a single genetic clade. Research identifies two broad lineages — one East Asian and one European/West Asian — with multiple ancient ancestries. Extensive gene flow, shaped by historical pastoral migrations and transhumance, has occurred among guardian breeds across Eurasia, consistent with multiple independent origins rather than a single ancestor.

Honesty first: none of these island breeds appears in the landmark livestock-guardian phylogenomic work (Coutinho-Lima et al. 2024), and that is not an oversight — most of them are droving, catch or estate dogs rather than flock-bonded guardians, so the LGD genetics literature simply does not cover them. What genetics exists is conservation and characterization work (mitochondrial DNA and microsatellites), not genome-wide phylogenomics, and it is patchy across the three archipelagos.

In the Canaries, Suárez et al. (2013) genotyped five Canary Island dog breeds — including the "Canary Island Mastiff", which corresponds to the Presa/Dogo Canario — at mtDNA and autosomal microsatellites, finding an mtDNA haplotype (A17+) exclusive to that breed and clean autosomal clustering; the authors read this as a modern, genetically bounded breed, not as proof of pre-Hispanic continuity. The Perro Majorero was deliberately excluded from that survey, and the Garafian Shepherd has no molecular study at all — both are essentially unsampled. In the Azores, the Cão de Fila de São Miguel (the "Azores Cattle Dog") was included in van Asch et al. (2005): it shared no maternal (mtDNA) haplotypes with the three mainland Portuguese breeds and instead matched dogs sampled in Northern Europe, a result that sits awkwardly with the popular Iberian-alão descent story; the Barbado da Terceira has no genetic study. In the Balearics, conservation-genetics work from Córdoba/IRFAP (Aguilera et al. 2022; Alanzor Puente et al. 2020, 2024) covered the native breeds: the Ca de Bou clusters most closely with the Ca de Bestiar (its 1980s recovery partner) and showed the lowest allelic diversity of the breeds studied (about 5.05 alleles per locus), a signature of its near-extinction bottleneck.

The consistent signal across all three archipelagos is island isolation and repeated reconstruction bottlenecks, not ancient purity. No whole-genome or SNP-array study exists for any of these breeds, no effective-population-size or inbreeding estimates are published for most of them, and two breeds (Perro Majorero, Garafian Shepherd) are effectively unstudied — an honest and substantial gap.

Maternal-line (haplogroup) signal

Haplogroups trace a single ancestral line — maternal lineage for mitochondrial DNA, or paternal lineage for Y-DNA. They represent a small portion of a dog's total genetic makeup. A haplogroup assignment does not identify a breed, confirm working role, or establish suitability for livestock guarding. The same haplogroup can appear across many geographically and functionally unrelated dog populations.

Breed ≠ Role ≠ Ancestry

We keep three things separate: what a dog is (breed identity), what it does (working role), and where its genes came from (ancestry). Genetics describes ancestry only — it never certifies working ability, temperament, or breed purity, and geographic origin is not proof of a unique lineage.
