The Perro de Presa Canario (short: Presa Canario) is a large Spanish molossoid, or mastiff-type, breed from the Canary Islands, recognised by the FCI as Standard No. 346 in Group 2 (Molossoid, Mastiff type).16 Its documented working history is as a butcher's catch-and-hold dog for cattle at slaughter and as a house, estate, and personal guard — not as a flock-bonded livestock guardian. The historical record is unusually clear on this point: loose perros de presa were repeatedly restricted or ordered destroyed by Canarian councils precisely because they injured sheep and goats. The modern breed is a late-20th-century reconstruction, and its name was changed from "Dogo Canario" to "Presa Canario" effective 1 January 2019.

I History & origins Documented

Aboriginal dogs of the pre-conquest Canary Islands were small, wolf-like animals, not mastiffs, so the breed cannot claim an unbroken native lineage. Iberian catch dogs — perros de presa — arrived with Castilian settlers after 1402. From the early 1500s, municipal-council (Cabildo) ordinances on Tenerife and Fuerteventura record presa dogs used by butchers to hold cattle at slaughter and by householders to guard estates, while simultaneously restricting them because they harmed small stock. The original antiguo presa had faded to near-extinction by the early 20th century, surviving mainly through the informal dog-fighting (pechadas) subculture. From the 1970s onward the modern breed was rebuilt by crossing residual local stock with a range of imported breeds. Popular stories of Roman Molossus or ancient British fighting-dog descent are tradition, not established fact.

III Working role Documented

The best-documented roles of the classical Presa Canario are a butcher's catch-and-hold dog that pinned cattle for slaughter, a cattle-management catch dog, a house and hacienda guard, and a control dog kept to kill feral (cimarrón) dogs raiding livestock in southern Tenerife.16 A 20th-century role as an informal fighting dog belongs to the breed's reconstruction context rather than to any pastoral tradition. The FCI standard frames the modern breed as a "guard dog used for protection of cattle" placed in the molossoid / cattle-dog section — cattle-associated guarding and handling, not flock-bonded guardianship of sheep or goats.16 Roles that are explicitly not documented for this breed include flock-bonded livestock guarding, pasture predator deterrence, and transhumance camp guarding; those functions in the Canaries belong instead to the separate Perro Majorero and Pastor Garafíano breeds.

IV Behavioral profile Qualitative

The Presa Canario is a guarding and catch breed, not a livestock guardian, so its behaviour is best read against that role. The FCI standard describes it as balanced and very self-confident, devoted and obedient to its family, but reserved and suspicious of strangers, with aggression or extreme shyness listed as disqualifying faults.16 The only empirical temperament study — a Polish assessment of 44 puppies using the PAT and Campbell tests — classified the breed as highly dominant, stubborn, intelligent and committed, and stressed that owners must actively socialise and train these dogs.1 The ratings below are qualitative reads from those sources and the historical documentary record, not measured scores; traits without a documented assessment are shown as gaps rather than guessed. There is no validated behavioural survey (e.g. C-BARQ) for this breed.

V Health Documented

Breed-specific veterinary evidence is thin — a single direct study, supported by proxy data from other large molossoid breeds:

  • Hip dysplasia is the one condition studied directly: a Spanish veterinary thesis radiographed 91 adult Dogo Canarios (FCI grading) plus juveniles assessed by the PennHIP distraction index, finding a high proportion of dysplastic adults, no dogs in the low-laxity range, and juvenile laxity predicting adult status. It is an unpublished thesis, so the signal is real but should be read with caution.3
  • Large-breed orthopedic risk is supported by proxy data: a registry analysis of over 900,000 dogs placed the pinscher/molossoid group — which includes mastiff-type breeds — at the highest hip-dysplasia risk of any FCI group.5 Hip dysplasia is polygenic, of low-to-moderate heritability, and strongly influenced by growth-phase nutrition.6

As a large molossoid breed, general large-breed concerns such as gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat) are plausible but have not been studied in this breed specifically. No breed-specific data were found on cardiac disease, cancer, elbow dysplasia, eye or thyroid disease, or lifespan — these remain open gaps, and no reliable breed lifespan figure can be stated.

VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed

The only peer-reviewed molecular study touching this breed genotyped five Canary Island dog breeds — including the "Canary Island Mastiff", which corresponds to the Presa/Dogo Canario — at autosomal microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA. It identified a mtDNA haplotype (A17+) exclusive to the Canary Island Mastiff, and autosomal markers cleanly clustered the breed as a distinct population. The authors read this as consistent with a modern, genetically bounded breed rather than as proof of ancient, pre-Hispanic continuity. No SNP-array or whole-genome study, and no effective-population-size, inbreeding, or bottleneck estimate specific to the Presa Canario, has been published.2

The Presa Canario is frequently confused with, or conflated with, other Canarian and Iberian molossoids. Most important is the naming boundary with the Perro Majorero (bardino): a separate, government-recognised shepherd-type Canarian breed from Fuerteventura that was a foundation population for the reconstructed Presa — a contributor, not a synonym. Several imported molossoids and bull-and-terrier breeds also shaped the modern reconstruction.

VIII Conservation & status Documented

Unlike most native guardian breeds, the Presa Canario is not classified as endangered. Its status is one of a recognised, actively bred heritage breed:

On 16 June 2025 the Canarian government declared 15 autochthonous breeds — including four canine breeds, the Presa Canario among them — as patrimonio genético of the Canary Islands, with policy support through the regional livestock programme and animal germplasm bank. Registry activity is healthy: Polish kennel-club data alone recorded 127 brood bitches and 63 stud dogs over 2014–2016. By contrast, the related Perro Majorero carries a much smaller conservation population. Genetic-diversity metrics for the modern breed beyond the 2013 characterisation study are not available, and asserted working-line versus show-line divergence is not documented in peer-reviewed literature.

IX Setting the record straight

"An ancient breed descended from Roman or British war dogs."
The aboriginal dogs of the pre-conquest Canaries were small, not mastiffs, and the modern breed is a 1970s-onward reconstruction from multiple imported breeds. No genetic study supports ancient descent, and leading Spanish authorities warn against romanticised origin narratives.
"A livestock guardian dog that protects flocks."
It is a cattle catch-and-hold dog and property guard. The historical record shows Canarian councils treating loose presa dogs as a threat to sheep and goats — the opposite of a flock-bonded guardian. The FCI classifies it as a guard dog for cattle, not a small-stock guardian.
"The Presa Canario and the Perro Majorero (bardino) are the same dog."
The Perro Majorero is a separate, government-recognised shepherd-type Canarian breed from Fuerteventura. It contributed to the reconstructed Presa but is a distinct breed, not a synonym; "bardino" on its own is only a coat descriptor.

What we're still learning

The published science on this breed is strikingly sparse for a dog of its profile. Only three studies address it directly — a genetic characterisation (Suárez et al., 2013), a hip-dysplasia thesis (Perera, 2003), and a puppy growth-and-temperament study (Horoszewicz & Galas, 2021) — and each is limited in scope. There is no genomic study, no breed health survey covering cardiac disease, cancer, GDV or lifespan, no validated behavioural survey, and no field study of the breed in any working context. Much of the breed's deep-history origin story is tradition rather than established fact, and public-safety and legal-liability signals (Spanish dangerous-dog legislation, the 2001 Whipple fatality in San Francisco) mean confident claims of the breed being "safe with children" or "beginner-friendly" are not supported by the evidence.
