The Georgian Shepherd — in Georgian Kartuli Nagazi, where nagazi is the local word for a large shepherd or guardian dog — is a big Caucasus livestock guardian native to the mountains of northeast Georgia. It lives with transhumant flocks of sheep, goats, and cattle and protects them from predators, above all the grey wolf and brown bear. Whether it is a distinct breed or a Georgian regional landrace within the wider Caucasian Shepherd Dog complex remains contested: it has been standardised by the Cynological Federation of Georgia (2000) and, more recently, by the Russian Kynological Federation (2025), but it is not separately recognised by the FCI, whose Standard No. 328 aggregates Georgian and other regional dogs into one Caucasian Shepherd breed.4 It is a livestock guardian, not a herding dog, and should not be conflated with the Armenian Gampr or the Turkish Kars Dog.
Name & origin Documented
Every one of the breed's names is plainly descriptive rather than commemorative, drawn from the Kartvelian (Georgian) language. Alongside Kartuli Nagazi — where the qartuli/kartuli spellings are simply competing transliterations of the same word for "Georgian" — the dog is also called qartuli mtis dzaghli, literally "Georgian mountain dog," built from mtis ("of the mountain") and dzaghli ("dog"). Georgian dictionaries add a telling usage note: although nagazi means only a shepherd's or guardian dog in general, in everyday speech it is applied above all to the Caucasian Shepherd Dog, which is how the word became fixed to this particular type. The Russian-derived alias Georgian Ovcharka conveys the very same idea, since ovcharka is Russian for "sheepdog."
I History & origins Documented
The dog's Georgian names are functional: nagazi is glossed in Georgian dictionaries as "shepherd dog" or "sheepdog," and kartuli simply means "Georgian." It developed among the highland pastoralists of northeast Georgia — most closely associated with the Tush (Tushetian) transhumant sheep herders — who moved flocks between the Greater Caucasus summer pastures and the semi-arid winter pastures of Kakheti. Large guardian dogs of the Caucasus have been documented since the early twentieth century by Soviet cynologists, who began formal Caucasian Shepherd Dog breed work in the 1920s; the first FCI standard, published in 1985, treated Georgian, Russian, and other regional dogs as a single breed. The Cynological Federation of Georgia, founded in 1991, later promoted a separate Georgian type, adopting a unified Georgian Mountain Dog / Nagazi standard in 2000. Popular claims of a 2,000-year lineage, descent from the Tibetan Mastiff, or service as an ancient war dog appear widely but rest on breed-club narrative rather than archaeological or genetic evidence.

Recorded coat is Double, guard hair 4–8 cm. A full physical profile — coat structure and care, climate tolerance, skeletal conformation and sexual dimorphism — is not yet collected for this breed.
III Working role Documented
The Nagazi's core job is guarding transhumant flocks of sheep, goats, and cattle. Fieldwork in and around the Vashlovani Protected Areas found livestock guarding dogs on 100% of surveyed farms, with a mean of 7.8 dogs per farm — a tradition still very much alive despite pessimistic forecasts from Georgian cynologists.2 The documented predator guild includes grey wolf, brown bear, Eurasian lynx, and golden jackal; the same fieldwork recorded cases in which guardian dogs killed attacking wolves, one corroborated by a wolf carcass and an injured dog with major facial wounds.2 Georgian and Russian breed histories also describe a long-standing secondary role guarding dwellings and property.3 Shepherds fit their dogs with spiked metal collars for protection in fights with wolves. The Nagazi works by presence and deterrence, bonded to the flock; it is a guardian, not a herding dog, and standards explicitly disqualify aggression toward people rather than selecting for bite-work.
IV Behavioral profile Qualitative
Breed standards and breed-club descriptions portray the Nagazi as vigilant, self-confident, and reserved with strangers, an independent "leader by nature" that requires an experienced, strong-willed handler.3 Field observation adds an important caution: attentiveness in working Georgian dogs was variable, with many dogs absent from the flock during attacks, and "pure-bred" status was not significantly correlated with lower livestock losses.2 No controlled behavioral study has ever tested the Georgian Shepherd by name; comparative work across guardian breeds finds broadly similar responses to wolves rather than breed-unique behavior.8 The ratings below are qualitative reads of those descriptions — not measured scores — and traits without a documented basis are shown as gaps rather than guessed.
V Health Documented
No peer-reviewed study reports hip, elbow, cardiac, eye, thyroid, or longevity data for the Georgian Shepherd / Nagazi specifically. Everything below is large-breed and general-LGD proxy evidence, not breed-specific measurement, and should be read that way:
- Bloat / gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a documented risk for large and deep-chested breeds — a prospective cohort measured 23–26 cases per 1,000 dog-years in large and giant breeds, with 28.6% mortality among affected dogs.11 As a massive molossoid dog, the Nagazi falls in this risk class by proxy.
- Orthopedic and developmental skeletal disease (hip and elbow dysplasia) are the primary concerns flagged across the large- and giant-breed veterinary literature, together with growth-related nutritional risks.12 No Nagazi-specific screening data exist.
The only near-breed clinical data come from the Turkish Kars Shepherd (reproductive parameters, seroprevalence studies) and a small Romanian kennel study of Caucasian Shepherd Dogs — geographic and morphological proxies, not working Georgian dogs. Any claim of breed-specific disease resistance should be treated with caution, as none is supported by evidence.
VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed
There is no whole-genome or SNP-panel study that characterises the Georgian Shepherd / Nagazi by name. The only directly relevant peer-reviewed genetic work sampled livestock guarding dogs in Georgia and found that more than 10% of dogs carried detectable wolf ancestry, with an estimated 2–3% being first-generation hybrids — evidence that gene flow with grey wolves is a recurring event where guardian dogs are kept traditionally, not proof of a "pure" ancient wolf lineage.1 Genome-wide LGD studies place guardian breeds within a web of multiple ancestries and shared gene flow rather than isolated, ancient, genetically pure lineages.4
VII Related & compared breeds Documented
The Georgian Shepherd sits at a crowded naming boundary and is frequently conflated with its neighbours. It must be distinguished from the FCI-standardised Caucasian Shepherd Dog, whose umbrella label (Standard No. 328) absorbed Georgian dogs in 1985 and whose modern show lines run larger and heavier than the Georgian working type; and it must not be treated as a synonym of the Armenian Gampr or the Turkish Kars Dog. Genomic and population-genetic work shows extensive shared ancestry and gene flow among these guardian breeds, so overlap between them is expected and does not by itself establish — or dissolve — breed distinctness.46
VIII Conservation & status Documented
No formal conservation assessment exists for the Georgian Shepherd. There is no FAO DAD-IS entry, and dogs are not listed in Georgia's 2023 inventory of Local and Endemic Animal Genetic Resources — a notable gap for a breed sometimes described as a national animal. The picture is mixed rather than settled:
Georgian cynology groups regard the traditional working population as "close to disappearing in its natural environment," citing the historical export of the best dogs to the USSR for military and show use, crossbreeding, inbreeding, and the loss of traditional knowledge of how to raise attentive guardian dogs. Against this, field reality is more resilient: working guardian dogs were present on every surveyed farm around the Vashlovani Protected Areas, most of them mixed-descent working stock, and the RKF's 2025 standard reports more than 6,000 dogs in the FCG studbook.2 Conservation initiatives include the Bombora and Caucasian & Georgian Sheep Dog clubs, the Tabakini kennel, and the NACRES / Fauna & Flora International Georgia Carnivore Conservation Project, which produced LGD-rearing manuals for Tushetian shepherds.
IX Setting the record straight
What we're still learning
Almost everything asserted about the Georgian Shepherd's deep history is tradition rather than established fact. No peer-reviewed study has genotyped, morphometrically measured, health-surveyed, or behaviorally tested the Nagazi under its own name, and the scientific relationship between it and the Caucasian Shepherd Dog remains uncharacterised. The measurements here come from breed-club standards; the behavior notes from breed descriptions and one field survey; and the health section entirely from large-breed proxies. The honest summary is that this is a real, living working landrace with thin primary science — sufficient for a cautious profile, not for confident breed-level claims.
