The "Khevsurian Shepherd Dog" is not a separately registered breed but a regional descriptor for the Georgian mountain guardian dogs — nagazi — of Khevsureti and the neighbouring highland districts (Pshavi, Mtiuleti, Gudamakari, Khevi) of the Greater Caucasus. These dogs belong to the broader Georgian Nagazi / Kartuli Nagazi (Georgian Shepherd) population, which was given a unified national standard by the Cynological Federation of Georgia in 1999–2000. The label most often points to the short-haired, northeastern "Kazbegian" or "Lion type" nagazi, which Georgian cynological sources treat as the most archaic and working-capable variant. Functionally the Khevsurian dog is a genuine livestock guardian: a large, territorial dog that bonds with and stays with flocks of sheep and goats to deter wolves, bears, jackals and lynx by presence rather than pursuit. Claims of a distinct ancient "war-dog" breed separate from the Nagazi are not supported by registry, historical, or genetic evidence.

I History & origins Documented

Georgian-language and historical sources describe a shepherd dog type native to the northeast of the country, with references in 14th-century Georgian literature; the Georgian historian Vakhushti Bagrationi noted that highland shepherds kept dogs that wolves and bears feared. For centuries these were maintained as a working landrace, with no studbook and no formal selection — the dogs were shaped by the demands of transhumant pastoralism rather than by a registry. During the Soviet period Georgian mountain dogs, especially the long-haired "Bear type," were taken as foundation stock for the Kavkazskaya Ovtcharka (Caucasian Shepherd Dog), and the export of the best working dogs is cited as one cause of quality decline in the populations that remained. After independence, the Cynological Federation of Georgia adopted a unified Georgian Shepherd (Nagazi) standard, framing the Nagazi as the authentic Georgian original — a nationally and politically sensitive distinction from the FCI-registered Caucasian Shepherd Dog.

III Working role Documented

The Khevsurian / northeastern Georgian highland dog's primary traditional function is as a livestock guardian that bonds with the flock and deters predators. Documented protected stock includes sheep (primary and best documented), goats, cattle, and — in the wider Georgian transhumance system — horses and donkeys.4 Secondary roles are well attested: guarding villages, livestock camps, and homestead perimeters, and escorting flocks along the multi-day highland-to-lowland transhumance routes of the Greater Caucasus, where dogs must work at altitude with minimal supervision.4 A 2010 field survey of farms in Vashlovani National Park recorded dogs present during 62% of 105 predatory attacks, with barking (90%) and chasing (91%) the dominant responses. The effective mechanism is deterrence through presence and voice rather than killing: while a few cases of dogs killing a marauding wolf are on record, wolf-killing is not the working norm, and bears typically require several dogs plus shepherd intervention to deter safely.

IV Behavioral profile Qualitative

No behavioural field study documents working guardian dogs in any Georgian highland pastoral system, so the assessments below are qualitative — drawn from the Cynological Federation of Georgia standard, Georgian Nagazi breed descriptions, and trekkers' field accounts — not measured scores. The wider guardian-dog literature stresses that the working profile is genetically grounded but must be activated by early socialisation: without appropriate juvenile exposure, bonding and stock-safety are not guaranteed.18 Traits with no documented assessment are shown as gaps rather than guessed.

V Health Qualitative

No breed-specific health study exists for the Khevsurian dog or for the Georgian Nagazi as distinct from the Caucasian Shepherd Dog. The most closely related formally recognised breed — the Caucasian Shepherd Dog — provides the only available proxy, and it must be read with caution because those figures come from Western show and kennel populations, not from working Caucasus landrace dogs:

  • Lifespan (proxy): a 2024 UK veterinary study reported a median lifespan of 5.4 years for the Caucasian Shepherd Dog — the lowest of the 155 breeds analysed. This likely reflects show-line selection, large body mass, and small UK breeding populations; whether working Georgian dogs share this profile is unknown.
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia (proxy): retrospective data suggest hip dysplasia in roughly a quarter of examined Caucasian Shepherd Dogs. As a giant, deep-chested breed the type also carries the usual large-breed risks of joint disease and bloat (GDV).
  • Working-context risks: tick-borne disease (piroplasmosis / babesiosis) in Caucasus pastures, brucellosis exposure endemic in eastern Georgia, and injuries from wolf or bear encounters are documented occupational hazards for Georgian working dogs.

Some sources argue that a landrace maintained under natural selection may hold better orthopedic health and longevity than show lines, but this is proxy-supported inference only, not confirmed for any Georgian highland population.

VI DNA & origin research Qualitative

The Khevsurian dog has never been genetically characterised as a named sample, and neither has the Georgian Nagazi as distinct from the Caucasian Shepherd Dog — the canonical record lists its clade as pending. What exists is proxy genetics on neighbouring Caucasus and Central Asian guardian populations, which consistently show a closely intertwined complex rather than sharp breed boundaries. Mitochondrial work found low diversity in the Caucasian Ovcharka and placed Caucasian, Central Asian, and Anatolian (Kangal / Akbash) guardians in a cluster that could not be cleanly separated.17 Balkan genomic studies likewise could not distinguish the Sarplaninac from the Caucasian Shepherd,136 and analysis of the Kazakh Tobet — a Central Asian landrace guardian — describes exactly the pattern expected here: high internal diversity, complex admixture, and no strict reproductive isolation, maintained by functional selection rather than a register.2 On present evidence the Khevsurian dog is best understood as a regional landrace within this broader continental guardian complex, not a genetically isolated breed.

The Khevsurian label sits inside the Georgian Nagazi complex and shades into a continuum of neighbouring Caucasus guardian populations. The boundaries between the regional Georgian labels (Tushetian, Pshavian, Khevsurian) are not formally defined; the clearest external distinctions are political and registry-based rather than genetic.

VIII Conservation & status Documented

No formal conservation status (FAO DAD-IS, FCI, or separate registry) exists for a "Khevsurian" breed; it is tracked, if at all, under the Georgian Nagazi. The working population is nonetheless documented as declining across several converging pressures:

The Georgian Nagazi — including the northeastern highland types — came close to disappearing as a working population in the late Soviet and early post-Soviet years, driven by the systematic export of the best breeding stock, crossbreeding with non-working types, and the erosion of traditional socialisation (raising pups with the flock). Rural depopulation compounded this: post-Soviet pastoral systems across the Caucasus contracted sharply, with roughly a 50% population loss reported in central Caucasus mountain communities between 1989 and the mid-2010s, weakening the pastoral selection pressure that shaped the dogs.9 The Cynological Federation of Georgia's 1999–2000 standardisation was explicitly a breed-revival effort, and conservation frameworks for landrace breeds emphasise securing working populations rather than only show lines.10 A further, sensitive concern is the misuse of some Georgian Nagazi dogs in dog-fighting — a real problem that Georgian enthusiasts and the Ministry of Environment are working to counter, and a distortion of, not a defining trait of, a working guardian type.

IX Setting the record straight

"A distinct ancient Khevsurian war-dog breed."
"Khevsurian" is a regional descriptor for Georgian Nagazi dogs of the Khevsureti highlands, not a standalone registered breed. Formal standardisation of the Georgian Shepherd came only in 1999–2000, and no genetic or historical evidence supports a separate ancient combat-dog lineage — the warrior imagery is regional lore.

The dogs work chiefly by deterrence — presence, territoriality, and barking. A few recorded cases of a dog killing a marauding wolf exist, but bears typically require several dogs plus shepherd intervention, and a single dog defeating a bear is overstated.
"Descends from wolves" / "is a wolf-hybrid."
Livestock guardian dogs cluster genetically with dogs, not wolves, despite their function; direct wolf ancestry is unsupported.

What we're still learning

Almost nothing about the Khevsurian dog is established by breed-specific study: there is no genetic, morphometric, behavioural, veterinary, or population survey of dogs sampled from Khevsureti or the adjacent highland districts. The evidence base is entirely proxy — the Georgian Nagazi documentation, the closely related Caucasian Shepherd Dog, and broader landrace-guardian research from the Balkans, Central Asia, and beyond. The very relationship between "Khevsurian Shepherd Dog" and "Georgian Nagazi" is unresolved, and the Georgian–Russian naming dispute over the Nagazi versus the Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a live political context. Claims of ancient distinct lineage, guaranteed predator-killing, or landrace health superiority should be read as tradition or inference, not fact.
