The Kars Dog — in Turkish the Kars Çoban Köpeği, and in academic writing the Kars Kafkas Çoban Köpeği ("Kars Caucasian Shepherd Dog") — is a large livestock guardian landrace from Kars Province and the high plateau of far northeastern Turkey, in the borderland where Turkey meets Georgia and Armenia.7 It is one of the historically recognised Turkish flock-guardian types alongside the Kangal and the Akbaş, and is consistently treated as a distinct regional breed in Turkish veterinary and agricultural literature.1 Its long, heavy, highly colour-variable double coat makes it look much like the Caucasian Shepherd Dog of the neighbouring Caucasus — but Turkish authorities and a microsatellite genetic study treat it as a separate northeastern Turkish population, not a synonym for the Caucasian Shepherd or the Kangal.1 The word "Kafkas" (Caucasian) in its academic name signals a geographic and morphological resemblance, not a claim of shared breed identity.

Name & origin Documented

The breed's name is purely toponymic: it is drawn straight from the Kars region of far northeastern Turkey, following the same place-naming pattern as the town-named Kangal rather than describing the dog itself. In this it stands apart from Turkey's descriptively named guardians — Karabaş (“black head”) and Akbaş (“white head”), whose labels encode coat colour — since the Kars carries no trait-based name of its own. Its plain Turkish form, Kars Köpeği, means simply “Kars dog,” and the alias çoban köpeği is not a breed word at all but the generic term for any livestock-guarding “shepherd's dog.”

I History & origins Documented

The breed takes its toponymic name from the town and province of Kars, and is documented across the neighbouring northeastern provinces of Ardahan, Artvin, Erzurum, Ağrı and Iğdır. Locally it is also called kıllı ("shaggy"), saçaklı ("fringed") and tüylü ("hairy") for its heavy coat.10 No pre-1996 written sources naming the Kars Dog as a distinct breed have been identified; before then it existed under general regional labels such as çoban köpeği (shepherd's dog) and kafkas köpeği (Caucasian dog). Its homeland sits on a historic crossroads of Turkish, Armenian and Caucasian pastoralism: the Kars region passed to Russia under the 1878 Treaty of Berlin and returned to Turkey under the 1921 Treaty of Kars, while sheep and cattle husbandry continued through every political change. The breed entered the scientific record only in 1996, when it was first described by D. D. Nelson at the First International Symposium on Turkish Shepherd Dogs in Konya. It then gained partial official recognition through a Turkish Standards Institution registration and a Geographical Indication ("Origin Name", Registration No. 40) in 2002, followed by the first morphometric and genetic studies over the next two decades.7

III Working role Documented

The Kars Dog is consistently described as a livestock guardian — a sürü koruma köpeği (flock-protection dog) — used by shepherds of the Kars-Ardahan plateau to protect grazing stock from predators.7 Sheep are the primary documented stock; cattle are recorded accompanying guardian dogs in the region, and goats are likely given the pastoral setting. It works within a classic transhumant system: flocks and herds move to high summer pastures (yayla) after the snow melts and are gathered into guarded pens overnight. The most detailed field description of how these dogs operate — moving with the herd, scent-marking the ground, detecting intruders at a distance by sight or smell, then barking and running to intercept — comes from a decade-long carnivore study in the Sarıkamış area, though that study observed mainly Kangal dogs and noted the Kars itself as rarely seen.8 Its documented adversaries are the region's real predators: the gray wolf, identified as the most common livestock predator locally, and the brown bear, for which anecdotes of dogs repulsing and even killing bears have been recorded — accounts that should be read as field anecdote rather than controlled evidence.10 Direct documentation of Kars Dogs specifically engaging wolves is not available; the deterrence role is supported by regional context rather than breed-specific study.

IV Behavioral profile Qualitative

There is no Kars-specific behavioural study, standardised temperament assessment or livestock-bonding ethogram in the literature.1 The two ratings below are inferred from the breed's documented function as a genuine flock-protection dog — a role that entails high watchfulness and low predatory interest in the stock it guards — and from regional working descriptions.7 Pet-website characterisations of the Kars as "aggressive" or unsuitable for families are not supported by any behavioural research and are not treated as breed facts here. Every trait without a documented assessment is shown as a gap rather than guessed.

V Health Documented

No breed-specific orthopedic, cardiac, ophthalmic or lifespan studies of the Kars Dog have been published — a genuine gap in the record. The direct health evidence that does exist is narrow:

  • Canine adenovirus (CAV) is the one infectious disease surveyed directly in this breed: a study of 94 unvaccinated Kars Dogs found roughly two-thirds seropositive, indicating widespread natural exposure.5
  • Reproductive and growth data have been measured in named Kars Shepherd Dogs — mean litter size around five and a notably high stillbirth rate — the first systematic fertility figures for the breed.3
  • Normal prostate anatomy was described by ultrasound in ten intact males, providing a reference baseline rather than a disease finding.6

Everything else is proxy inference from large-breed and regional health ecology, and should be read as such: hip and elbow dysplasia are general concerns in large guardians but have no Kars-specific study; tick-borne disease and internal parasites are probable in the pastoral environment; and rabies is present in the region, with foxes the main reservoir. The heavy double coat and traditional use on open mountain pasture point to strong cold tolerance. Pet sources cite a 10–12 year lifespan, but no study supports a figure.

VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed

The strongest direct genetic evidence for the Kars Dog is a single microsatellite study of native Turkish breeds (17 microsatellite loci plus three protein markers, 141 dogs). In its factorial correspondence analysis the Kars Shepherd, Kangal, Akbaş and Turkish Greyhound each fell into clearly separated clusters, and only about 1.9% of the total genetic variation was explained by breed differences.1 The study sampled the Kars in two colour-based groups ("White Kars" and "Black-Grey Kars") and concluded that lumping all Turkish shepherd dogs together as a single "Anatolian" breed is incorrect. This is a moderate-sized panel and the only direct test of the breed: no SNP-array, whole-genome or mitochondrial-DNA study has yet sampled the Kars. A regional mtDNA survey that grouped Caucasian, Central Asian and Turkish guardian types into one weakly differentiated cluster did not include the Kars, so it cannot resolve whether the Kars Dog and the FCI Caucasian Shepherd Dog are truly distinct populations or the same borderland stock under different registry histories.9 That relationship, along with any link to the Armenian Gampr or Georgian Shepherd, remains geographically plausible but genetically unstudied.

The Kars sits in a cluster of Anatolian and Caucasus-borderland guardians it is compared with — and frequently confused with. It is morphologically closest in appearance to the Caucasian Shepherd Dog, genetically separated from the Kangal and Akbaş by the one direct study available, and geographically adjacent to the Armenian and Georgian mountain dogs, whose exact relationship to it is unresolved.

VIII Conservation & status Documented

Turkish academic sources have classified the Kars Dog as endangered or under severe threat since 2012, and a long-running field study found it "in decline" and rarely seen in its own home range. There is no formal population census; the status is an expert assessment rather than a counted figure.

Documented threats compound one another: rural depopulation of northeastern Turkey has shrunk the shepherding population that maintains working dogs; the Kangal has become the dominant guardian even within the Kars area itself, displacing the local type; crossbreeding erodes the breed's distinctiveness; and there is no full official registry or dedicated breed club — as of 2012 the breed was not registered with Turkey's Ministry of Agriculture.8 Its main formal recognition is a 2002 Geographical Indication (Origin Name No. 40) restricted to dogs born and raised in Kars Province, but even this status is legally uncertain: a Turkish court has ruled that animal breed characteristics cannot properly be registered as geographical indications, and the Turkish Kennel Club (KIF) lists the Kars only among breeds it has "a duty to protect" rather than on its fully registered breed list.7

IX Setting the record straight

"The Kars Dog is just the Turkish name for the Caucasian Shepherd Dog."
They resemble each other strongly in coat and colour, but the Caucasian Shepherd (FCI 328) is a Soviet-era standardised breed based on Georgian-type dogs, while the Kars is a Turkish regional landrace with its own Geographical Indication and its own genetic cluster. Turkish sources use "Kafkas" as a geographic descriptor, not a claim of identity.

The one direct genetic study places the Kars, Kangal and Akbaş in clearly separated clusters. The Kangal is a short-coated, fawn, black-masked dog from Sivas; the Kars carries a long, heavy coat in many colours.
"It has at least 600 years of history and is the ancestor of European mountain breeds."
No primary historical source predating its 1996 scientific description has been found. The ancient-lineage and "ancestor of European breeds" claims come from pet websites and are unsupported by any scholarship.
"Kars Dogs weigh 60–80 kg and are guaranteed wolf-killers."
The published morphometric mean is about 44.6 kg — the larger figures come from pet sites and are contradicted by the academic data. Bear-repulsion has been recorded anecdotally, but no study documents wolf-killing as a breed trait.

What we're still learning

Much of what circulates about the Kars Dog online is tradition or invention rather than evidence. Its deep history is unverifiable before 1996; its distinctiveness rests on a single microsatellite study; its relationship to the Caucasian, Armenian and Georgian guardians of the same borderland is genetically untested; and it has no breed-specific health or behavioural survey beyond narrow reproductive, infectious-disease and anatomy papers. It is best understood as a genuine, working northeastern Turkish livestock guardian landrace with partial official recognition and real but limited scientific documentation — a breed whose conservation is more urgent than its record is complete.
