The Great Pyrenees — known in the UK as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, in France officially as the Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées and colloquially as the Patou — is a large white livestock guardian breed from the Pyrenees along the French–Spanish border. It is a genuine livestock guardian dog: raised with sheep and goats from puppyhood, it bonds to the flock and deters wolves and bears by presence, patrol, and heavy barking rather than by herding. Its working use in France is unusually well documented, because wolf recolonisation since the 1990s generated extensive government and academic study of guardian-dog deployment.2 It should not be confused with the small herding Berger des Pyrénées, nor with the separate Spanish Pyrenean Mastiff and Spanish Mastiff.
Name & origin Documented
The breed's names are fundamentally toponymic, built on the Pyrenees mountain range that straddles the French–Spanish border: the official French Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées reads literally as “mountain dog of the Pyrenees,” with mountain dog being a naming element the breed shares with many Alpine and Balkan guardians. In everyday French the dog is simply the Patou, a colloquial name for the Pyrenean flock guardian rather than a description of any trait. In the western United States it is also folded into the informal collective label whitedog, applied to pale-coated guardian breeds such as the Great Pyrenees and the Maremma.
I History & origins Documented
The breed developed among the shepherds of the Pyrenean massif, on both the French and Spanish sides of the range, where large white flock-guardians worked the seasonal transhumance routes between lowland winter pastures and mountain summer estives. A 14th-century hunting treatise, the Livre de Chasse of Gaston Phébus, lord of Béarn, describes dogs of the region and is often cited as contextual evidence, though it does not separate guardian dogs from hunting dogs with taxonomic clarity. The tradition that the breed was named "Royal Dog of France" under Louis XIV in 1675 is a breed-club story that has not been independently verified. Formal breeding was organised by the French club (RACP) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rural depopulation and the near-elimination of wolves and bears reduced the working population through the 20th century; genetic study of modern LGDs indicates that biannual transhumance was a major historical driver of gene flow among the breeds.1

II Physical & conformation Documented
- Coat structure
- A thick, weather-resistant double coat.
- Outer coat
- The outer coat is long, flat, thick, and coarse, with hair that is straight or slightly undulating. It forms a profuse mane, particularly in males, and features feathering on the legs and a plume on the tail.
- Undercoat
- A dense, fine, and woolly undercoat provides warmth and insulation. It can be white or shaded in color.
- Shedding
- A very heavy shedder, often described as shedding "all the time". Experiences a massive shedding of the undercoat ("blowout") in the spring.
- Climate suitability
- Best suited for cooler regions and harsh, cold, mountainous climates. The thick double coat offers excellent insulation from cold but can also protect from summer heat with proper care (shade and water).
- Grooming
- The coat is dirt- and tangle-resistant, requiring less grooming than its volume might suggest. A thorough brushing with a pin or slicker brush is needed at least once a week, with more frequent brushing during heavy shedding seasons.

III Working role Peer-reviewed
The breed's core job is guarding sheep and goat flocks, historically along Pyrenean transhumance routes and, since the 1990s, across a much wider deployment zone in the French Alps and Provence following wolf recolonisation. It is bonded to livestock through deliberate immersive socialisation from puppy age, is left with the flock day and night, and works largely without continuous human direction. Its working use is directly documented by INRAE, the French national wolf plan, and NGO monitoring programmes.2 Field research treats the dog as a deterrent rather than a fighter: nocturnal monitoring in the southern French Alps recorded complex dog–wolf interactions and recommends multiple dogs per flock (six or more on high summer pastures) for effective deterrence.34 In North America it has been an institutional favourite — North Dakota cost-share records show it as the most frequently selected nonlethal predator-control option.8 Claims of breed superiority are not supported: a US field comparison found few behavioural differences between guardian breeds facing a simulated wolf,5 and a Colorado producer survey rated Akbash dogs as more effective than Great Pyrenees against several predators.6
IV Behavioral profile Qualitative
The breed's signature working style, described consistently across pastoral and field sources, is "watch-and-warn" vigilance — close-to-flock alerting, territorial patrol, and heavy nocturnal warning barking used to deter threats.3 The assessments below are qualitative descriptions, not measured scores; research repeatedly stresses that individual variation can exceed breed differences and that breed is a weaker predictor of guardian performance than often claimed.5 Two documented caveats matter: barking is very high and roaming strong, so secure fencing and neighbour management are emphasised, and biting or stranger-directed aggression has been recorded in working French contexts;3 and while prey drive toward stock is low, a Norwegian field assessment found most tested dogs chased reindeer — a wildlife-conflict risk in some settings.7 Traits without a supporting description are shown as gaps rather than guessed.
V Health Peer-reviewed
The Great Pyrenees is one of the better-documented guardian breeds for breed-specific inherited disease, with several conditions confirmed directly in the breed:
- Cerebellar ataxia (SACS deletion) — a breed-specific 4-base-pair deletion in the SACS gene causes autosomal-recessive neuronal degeneration, with onset as early as four months; it is the first naturally occurring large-animal model of human ARSACS.10
- Patellar luxation carries an unusually heavy burden for a large breed. A Swedish insurance study (>600,000 dogs) found Pyrenean Mountain Dogs among the highest rates of patellar-luxation-related euthanasia of any breed, at a median euthanasia age of about 2.2 years;12 a systematic review notes an orthopedic survey giving the breed the highest odds ratio for the condition of any breed listed.13
- Degenerative myelopathy and eye disease — screening of the Italian breeding population found the SOD1 degenerative-myelopathy allele at about 7% frequency (13% of dogs heterozygous carriers), multifocal retinopathy 1 in 6% of dogs, and zero hereditary-cataract carriers.11
- Laryngeal paralysis–polyneuropathy complex was described in a series of six related young dogs, all presenting with laryngeal paralysis and megaoesophagus and all dying or euthanised before age two, consistent with autosomal-recessive inheritance.14
- Hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease) — a Montreal referral study found the breed had the highest prevalence of any breed in its population (about 9.7%, against a general canine prevalence well under 1%), the strongest direct evidence of a breed-specific autoimmune predisposition.15
- Great Pyrenees retinopathy, a retinal / retinal-pigment-epithelial dysplasia with serous retinal detachments in young dogs, has been characterised in the breed.16
Chondrodysplasia (a dwarfism disorder) and a breed-named variant of Glanzmann thrombasthenia (a bleeding disorder) are also documented as breed-specific and are included on genetic-test panels. As a large, deep-chested giant breed it additionally carries the usual elevated bloat (GDV) and large-breed cancer (osteosarcoma) risks. Lifespan is commonly cited at 10–12 years, though surveys of giant breeds report lower averages;17 no peer-reviewed longevity study specific to the breed was located, and hip- and elbow-dysplasia prevalence figures come from screening registries and derivative sources that vary.

Genome-wide genetic research places the Great Pyrenees within the broad European livestock-guardian continuum rather than in any single ancient lineage. The clearest evidence is a study of 304 guardian dogs from 36 breeds, combined with modern and ancient dog genomes, which included the Great Pyrenees.1
VII Related & compared breeds Documented
The Great Pyrenees is one of the great white mountain guardians of southern Europe and is most usefully compared with its Pyrenean and Mediterranean relatives. In popular sources it is frequently confused with the small herding Berger des Pyrénées (Labrit) — a separate breed and function — and it is a distinct breed from the Spanish Pyrenean Mastiff and Spanish Mastiff despite geographic overlap.
VIII Conservation & status Documented
The breed itself is not at risk — it is registered worldwide and is not listed as endangered — but its working population and role sit at the centre of Europe's large-carnivore-coexistence debate:
French purebred registrations have declined (554 in 2022, down 18% year-on-year), but a distinct working "Patou" population — registered and unregistered — is sustained through state subsidies under the French Wolf Plan, which funds acquisition, veterinary care, and behavioural testing of guardian dogs. The breed's modern significance is as a nonlethal tool for human–carnivore coexistence: field evidence shows guardian dogs can stop the great majority of depredation while allowing carnivores to persist in the landscape.9 At the same time, working dogs in France's multi-use landscapes generate documented conflict — biting incidents, noise complaints, and a recognised need for a clearer legal-responsibility framework.3
IX Setting the record straight
What we're still learning
Much of the breed's deep story — Roman or Tibetan descent, the "Royal Dog of France," being "unchanged for centuries" — is breed-club tradition rather than verified record. Its strongest evidence is modern: an unusually rich French government and INRAE literature documenting its working use against wolves and bears, and a cluster of breed-specific genetic-disease studies. Notable gaps remain: there is no peer-reviewed genomic study of French working Patou lines (the studied samples were largely pet dogs), and no breed-specific longevity survey.
