The breed's German name, Deutscher Schäferhund, is purely occupational: Schäfer means "shepherd" and Hund means "dog," so the name reads literally as "German shepherd's dog" and places the breed squarely in the herding line of German dog terms, alongside the generic Hirtenhund ("herder's dog") rather than any guarding term. When the breed travelled into Russian usage it became nemetskaya ovcharka — "German ovcharka" — where ovcharka is a catch-all working-dog word spanning "sheepdog," "shepherd's dog" and "livestock guardian dog" that Russian applies to many breeds regardless of their native country. The name is thus descriptive of a function, the tending of flocks, rather than of a place of origin or a founder.

A 2025 on-farm study in Germany examined guard-dog behaviour toward other animals and humans, reflecting the breed's continued use as a farm and property watchdog.6 A separate survey of livestock-guardian-dog owners recorded only one German Shepherd among 132 working guardians — underlining that it is not a flock-bonded LGD, and that its protective work is directed at people and property rather than at grazing stock.

The German Shepherd is one of the more intensively studied breeds for inherited disease, though most of the findings here come from multi-breed studies in which it was one of several breeds examined:
- Atopic dermatitis — the breed is genetically predisposed. A genome-wide study found a locus on chromosome 27 (CFA27) associated with atopic dermatitis in German Shepherd Dogs,4 and later work identified major risk and protective haplotypes at the PKP2 locus.5
- Haemophilia A (Factor VIII deficiency) — breed-specific F8 variants (two distinct German Shepherd variants) appear on canine genetic-test panels, i.e. inherited bleeding disorders documented in the breed.
- Cone degeneration — an inherited eye disorder ("day-blindness", causing light-sensitivity) was characterised in the German Shepherd Dog.
- MDR1 / ABCB1 drug sensitivity — the ABCB1-1Δ (MDR1) mutation, best known in herding breeds, has been detected in German Shepherd Dogs in large genotyping studies (a breed in which it had not previously been found), meaning some individuals may be sensitive to certain drugs such as ivermectin.
- Orthopaedic / joint disease — as a large breed the German Shepherd carries hip, elbow and cruciate-ligament concerns, and it is among the breeds in which early spay/neuter is associated with higher rates of joint disease.
- Conformation-related musculoskeletal effects — the breed's back and hindquarter conformation varies widely; a greater back slope is associated with altered forelimb loading and increased mid-thoracic flexion, with possible musculoskeletal consequences.3
- Digestive sensitivity — German Shepherd-type large-breed dogs showed high rates of poor stool quality with certain fermentable fibres in a nutrition review, suggesting a comparatively sensitive gut.
As a large, deep-chested breed it also carries the usual bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus) risk. Because most of these findings come from multi-breed studies, they describe tendencies rather than certainties, and conformation and working lines within the breed differ markedly.
VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed
Recent genetic work touches the German Shepherd mainly as a reference or ancestral breed. It is one of the founding breeds of the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, and a genomic study of that wolfdog and its ancestors used the German Shepherd to gauge how much grey-wolf ancestry the derived breeds retain.1 A popular claim that wolves were deliberately used in the German Shepherd's own creation was tested directly by sequencing museum German Shepherd specimens (accessioned 1906–1993); the analysis found wolf ancestry within the breed to be negligible to non-existent.2 Cranial-shape studies place the German Shepherd among the more wolf-like (less paedomorphic) domestic forms in skull morphospace, while still clearly distinct from wolves. No distinct German Shepherd genetic clade is named in the material gathered here, so none is asserted.
