The Gaddi Kutta — widely called the Himalayan Sheepdog — is a livestock guardian dog landrace of the Western Himalayas, historically kept by the Gaddi shepherds of Himachal Pradesh, India.1 It works as a mastiff-type flock and camp guardian within a long-distance transhumant system, travelling with sheep and goats between low winter valleys and high summer pastures. In January 2025 the Indian Council of Agricultural Research–National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR) formally recognised it as India's fourth registered indigenous dog breed. It is not the same breed as the Bakharwal Dog of Jammu and Kashmir, despite frequent conflation in Indian media, and it is not recognised by the FCI, AKC, UKC, or The Kennel Club.

Name & origin Documented

The name is an ethnonym compound: Gaddi points to the Gaddi shepherd community of the Western Himalayas, while kutta is simply the Hindi/Pahari word for "dog" — so the breed name reads literally as "(dog) of the Gaddi people," or "Gaddi's dog." Cross-cultural naming surveys classify it as a modern, ethnonym-based label, the same naming strategy that produced the neighbouring Bakharwal Dog ("dog of the Bakarwal people") of Kashmir. This stands in contrast to the trait- and function-based names used elsewhere in the region, such as the Tibetan Do-Khyi ("tied dog"), where the animal is named for how it works rather than for the people who keep it.

I History & origins Documented

The breed is named after the Gaddi tribe, a semi-nomadic pastoral community whose traditional homeland is the Bharmour region ("Gadderan") of Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh.1 The most plausible origin, as stated by the CSKHPKV research team that led the formal characterisation, is that Gaddi shepherds selectively developed and maintained this working dog during seasonal Himalayan migration; the team is explicit that much of the breed's deep origin is anecdotal. An early-19th-century traveller's account (Mir Izzet Ullah) describes large Himalayan dogs in the region as "twice as large as those of Hindustan… very strong and fierce, and… good watch dogs at night," but it does not name the Gaddi Kutta specifically. A widely repeated claim that the breed shares ancestry with Tibetan Mastiff-type dogs is treated by the primary sources as a plausible working hypothesis, not a confirmed finding.2

Recorded coat is Black double coat. A full physical profile — coat structure and care, climate tolerance, skeletal conformation and sexual dimorphism — is not yet collected for this breed.

III Working role Documented

The Gaddi Kutta's documented primary role is guarding sheep and goats within Gaddi transhumant pastoralism. The ICAR-NBAGR characterisation states the dog is "primarily developed and used for the herding of sheep and goats by shepherds of the Gaddi tribe," and the 2026 genomic study documents its seasonal migratory management — high-altitude pastures (up to ~4,000 m) in summer and mid-hill/lower elevations (~700–2,000 m) in winter.12 Secondary uses documented in sources include camp guarding of temporary alpine camps during migration and, anecdotally, alerting at Indian Army posts along the Line of Control. The predator landscape it works in is well studied: wolves and snow leopards are the primary large-carnivore threats to livestock in the western and trans-Himalaya, alongside common leopards and Himalayan black bears.79 A 2025 peer-reviewed field study is the first to assess Gaddi dogs specifically as a non-lethal deterrent, reporting that 23.81% of respondents using them experienced no livestock losses.16 Effectiveness in the general guardian-dog literature varies considerably by predator, terrain, and dog quality13, and poorly contained large dogs in this same landscape are themselves documented livestock predators.8 The breed is not primarily documented as a cattle guardian, herding dog, or hunting dog.

IV Behavioral profile Qualitative

No standardised behavioural assessment, temperament test, or flock-bonding study has been published for the Gaddi Kutta.1 The traits below are qualitative — drawn from the breed's documented working context and from descriptive breed-comparison compilations, not from measured scores. Where sources give a comparison rating it is treated as qualitative only. Traits with no supporting description are shown as gaps rather than guessed. The general livestock-guardian literature provides the behavioural framework — flock bonding, presence-based deterrence, and independent work under limited supervision14 — but none of it is breed-specific to the Gaddi Kutta.

V Health Documented

There is no breed-specific veterinary health survey, orthopedic screening dataset, or lifespan study for the Gaddi Kutta — this is a documented gap across every clinical domain.1 What can be stated honestly is limited:

  • Traditional management gaps. The phenotypic-characterisation study reports that Gaddi shepherds typically do not follow vaccination or deworming schedules and provide no housing, implying that parasite load, infectious disease, and rabies exposure are real field health concerns rather than measured rates.1
  • Small-population genetics. An ICAR-linked genetic analysis reports a mean inbreeding coefficient (FIS) of roughly 0.10, consistent with a small, geographically isolated population and, by conservation-genetics reasoning, an elevated risk of inherited disorders.4
  • Orthopedic risk (proxy only). Breed-comparison compilations list hip and elbow dysplasia and patellar luxation for the Gaddi / Himalayan Sheepdog, with no prevalence figures; these mirror the general orthopedic risk of large guardian breeds rather than any breed-specific finding.
  • Genomic inference, not clinical data. The 2026 whole-genome study flags variants in pathways for muscle contraction, metabolism, hemostasis, and immune function, which the authors interpret as possible correlates of endurance and cold/altitude resilience — these are pathway-level inferences, not health measurements.2

As a large, deep-chested guardian the breed presumptively carries the usual bloat (GDV) and large-breed orthopedic risks, but no breed lifespan or disease-prevalence figures are documented.

VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed

Molecular work on the Gaddi Kutta is recent and thin but growing. Genome-wide SNP studies report the Gaddi as genetically distinct from exotic breeds owned in India, with a higher proportion of unique variants than the imported breeds tested, and describe themselves as the first molecular characterisations of the breed.34 A comparative annotation study reported unique miRNAs in the Gaddi relative to exotic breeds.5 A 2026 whole-genome resequencing study exists but was based on only two individuals from the conservation unit, so it is genomic profiling rather than a population study.2

The 2026 genomic paper groups the Gaddi within an Indian "Himalayan sheepdog complex" alongside the Bhotia and Bangar, treated as related but distinguishable types. This is a descriptive grouping, not a resolved phylogeny: no comparative genomic or morphometric study yet places the Gaddi relative to the Bakharwal Dog or the Tibetan Mastiff, and the widely cited Tibetan Mastiff ancestry remains an unconfirmed working hypothesis. Tibetan Mastiff genetics are the closest studied analog for likely high-altitude adaptation, but the direct comparison has never been done.6

The Gaddi Kutta sits within a group of Himalayan guardian dogs that are frequently confused in popular and media sources. The most important distinctions are that the Bakharwal Dog is a separate breed of a different community and region (Gujjar/Bakharwal nomads of Jammu and Kashmir), that the Bhotia is a closely related but separately-characterised Uttarakhand/Nepal type, and that the Tibetan Mastiff is a distinct, heavier, internationally recognised breed. The genetic relationships among these are unresolved.

VIII Conservation & status Documented

The Gaddi Kutta is characterised as a declining working landrace. No population viability analysis has been published, and the widely cited population figure is an estimate rather than a census:

Sources estimate fewer than 1,000 pure-type Gaddi dogs remain, with the primary threats being genetic dilution through uncontrolled crossbreeding with village dogs and the broader decline of nomadic pastoralism among the Gaddi community.1 The Conservation-Cum-Propagation Centre at COVAS/CSKHPKV, Palampur is the only known institutional facility maintaining the breed under a structured programme, and the ICAR-NBAGR recognition (January 2025) explicitly aims to address the decline. The Government of Himachal Pradesh's PEHEL scheme (January 2026) supports pastoral livelihoods and may indirectly help retain working dogs. No IUCN or FAO conservation designation is confirmed, and a DAD-IS listing was not verified in the source research.

IX Setting the record straight

"The Gaddi Kutta is just another name for the Bakharwal Dog."
They are distinct breeds — different communities (Gaddi shepherds of Himachal Pradesh vs. Gujjar/Bakharwal nomads of Jammu and Kashmir), different pastoral systems, and different geographic cores. Indian media and military sources sometimes conflate them; this is a naming error.
"It is a proven descendant of the Tibetan Mastiff."
Shared ancestry with Tibetan Mastiff-type dogs is described by the primary sources as plausible but unconfirmed. No comparative genomic study has established the relationship.
"It is an ancient breed."
No genetic dating or archaeological evidence supports a specific antiquity, and the 2026 genome study does not date the breed's origin. "Ancient" is tradition, not evidence.
"A wolf- and leopard-killing fighting dog."
No field study has measured Gaddi encounters with wolves, snow leopards, or bears, and no credible source documents a dog-fighting tradition for the breed. Its documented function is presence-based deterrence, not proven predator-killing.

What we're still learning

The Gaddi Kutta is a recently and thinly documented breed: peer-reviewed evidence has grown quickly since 2022, but the genomics rest on very small samples (the whole-genome study used just two dogs), there is no behavioural, health, or lifespan study, and the single direct effectiveness study could not be fully accessed. Even the boundary between the Gaddi and the closely related Bhotia is still under investigation by ICAR-NBAGR. The "fewer than 1,000 remain" figure and the physical measurements circulating online are estimates rather than published, sample-backed data. Much of what is asserted about the breed's antiquity and predator-fighting reputation is tradition, not established fact.
