The Dogue de Bordeaux — the French Mastiff — is a large, brachycephalic molossoid breed from the Bordeaux and wider Aquitaine region of southwestern France. It is a genuine guardian, but of a very specific kind: its documented job was guarding estates, vineyards, farms, butcher shops and cattle markets — property and people — by presence, size and deterrence. The FCI states its role as "guard, defence and dissuasion," and places it in Group 2 (Molossoid / mastiff type). It is not a livestock guardian dog: no primary source documents it living with and bonding to grazing flocks, and its territorial, master-attached temperament is the opposite of the flock-bonded, prey-suppressed profile of a true LGD. Its earlier history includes boar hunting and organised baiting and fighting, and the FCI standard itself calls it "an ancient fighting dog." The modern breed is essentially a show and companion animal, rebuilt from a very narrow post-war founder pool, and it carries one of the heaviest health burdens of any recognised breed.

I History & origins Documented

The breed's verifiable history is much shorter than its lore suggests. The earliest credible textual reference to a likely ancestor is Gaston Phébus's Livre de Chasse (1387–1389), which describes the alan vautre, a massive boar-hunting dog the FCI standard cites as an antecedent; the word dogue (the French equivalent of "mastiff") enters written French by the end of the 14th century.16 The dogs were regional and little known outside Aquitaine until the 19th century, when three types (Toulouse, Paris and Bordeaux) were recognised and the Bordeaux type became the modern breed. The Dogue was first shown at the first French dog show in Paris in 1863, and Pierre Mégnin wrote the first standard in 1896. The breed passed through repeated near-extinctions — losses in the French Revolution, then in both World Wars — leaving only a handful of dogs and, by the 1960s, reportedly just two active French breeders; Raymond Triquet's 1970/1971 standard is credited with the modern revival.16 Global popularity is largely a post-1989 phenomenon driven by the film Turner & Hooch, and AKC recognition followed in 2008.

II Physical & conformation

Recorded coat is Short, fine. A full physical profile — coat structure and care, climate tolerance, skeletal conformation and sexual dimorphism — is not yet collected for this breed.

III Working role Documented

The most consistently documented working role, from the pre-Revolution period onward, is estate and property guardian — guarding the vineyards, châteaux and homes of the French landed class, valued for size, territoriality and a "very dissuasive aspect."16 After the Revolution the breed survived in the hands of butchers, cattle traders and farmers, working as a farm watchdog and guarding butcher shops and livestock markets. The FCI standard's historical summary lists boar hunting, codified fighting (bull- and bear-baiting), guarding of houses and cattle, and service to butchers.16 Critically, the standard's phrase "guarding of cattle" means guarding cattle as property — at markets and in stockyards — not bonded flock-guarding in open pasture. No evidence links the Dogue de Bordeaux to transhumance, seasonal pastoral migration, or predator-deterrence work with grazing stock, and the breed appears in no agricultural or livestock-conservation register. Today no working line of any kind survives; the population is show- and companion-focused.

IV Behavioral profile Qualitative

There is no peer-reviewed temperament or behaviour study specific to the Dogue de Bordeaux. The nearest evidence is a French veterinary thesis reviewing the Molosser group, which concluded that molossers are generally less aggressive than public perception holds, while dogue-type breeds tend to be more reactive than mountain-type breeds within the group.14 The traits below are qualitative reads from the breed standard and secondary descriptions, not measured scores. The FCI standard describes the breed as gifted for guarding "with vigilance and great courage but without aggressiveness," very attached to its master, calm with a high stimulus threshold, and notes that males normally have a dominant character.16 Several traits central to livestock-guardian work — independent flock-following initiative, flock bonding, suppressed prey drive — are absent by all available documentation, which is itself the key finding for this breed. Traits with no qualitative description are shown as gaps rather than guessed.

V Health Peer-reviewed

The Dogue de Bordeaux is relatively well studied for a mastiff-type breed, and the picture is sobering — it carries one of the heaviest health burdens of any recognised breed, with a lifespan commonly reported at just 5 to 8 years. A French retrospective of 79 dogs found a mean lifespan of 7.6 years, with the leading causes of death being cancer (29.4%), cardiac disease (13.2%) and kidney disease (8.8%).6

  • Cardiac disease is the signature concern. An echocardiographic study of 53 dogs in Denmark found a left-basilar murmur in 72% and aortic-jet velocity above 2.5 m/s (the threshold for aortic stenosis) in 17%, alongside an abnormally small aortic annulus even in healthy dogs — evidence of strong predisposition to subaortic stenosis.1
  • Inherited cardiac defects have been traced within pedigrees: a study of Israeli dogs described subaortic stenosis together with tricuspid valve dysplasia, with an autosomal-recessive pattern suspected and the defects traced to three common ancestors.2 Atrial fibrillation was also documented in about 39% of a UK referral series of 64 dogs, raising the possibility of an inherited arrhythmogenic component.
  • Familial juvenile glomerulonephropathy (a serious inherited kidney disease) is documented in 16 related French Mastiffs, with an autosomal-recessive pattern suspected; affected dogs died at a mean age of only about 20 months.4 Breed-specific biochemical reference intervals (62 healthy dogs) flag differences in ALT, AST, total proteins, cholesterol, lipase and thyroxin, consistent with predispositions to hypothyroidism and kidney disease.5
  • Orthopedic disease is severe. A Swedish prevalence study of young adult dogs ranked the Dogue de Bordeaux highest of the breeds studied for hip dysplasia (75.4%) and second-highest for elbow dysplasia (40.0%).9 A developmental thoracic vertebral stenosis causing spinal-cord compression is also reported in young dogs.7
  • General health. A UK survey of 278 owners reported chronic skin disease in 22.7%, lameness in 15.5%, gastrointestinal signs in 13.3% and neoplasia in 10.1% — and, notably, that 31% of deaths were sudden and unexpected, pointing to under-diagnosed cardiac disease.3

As a brachycephalic giant breed the Dogue carries two compounding penalties at once. Proxy data show brachycephalic dogs live roughly 2.1 years less than mesocephalic ones and suffer elevated summer (heat-related) mortality,10 while giant breeds independently face high rates of bloat (GDV) and osteosarcoma.11 The breed is listed among those at elevated risk for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). Ectropion and other conditions are also reported, and breeder/commercial sources describe high cesarean rates (roughly a quarter of litters by some accounts, though not from peer-reviewed data), consistent with the breed's large head and brachycephalic build. No breed-specific hip/elbow-prevalence figures should be inferred beyond the published studies above.

VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed

There is no breed-specific whole-genome, SNP-array or mitochondrial study of the Dogue de Bordeaux, and no published phylogenetic placement — it is absent from the major breed-genomics datasets that include the Bullmastiff, Cane Corso and Boerboel. On morphology and history it is expected to sit within the European mastiff / Molosser cluster, but that placement is not established by primary data. The direct genetic evidence that does exist is pedigree-based: a French pedigree study of dogs born 1997–2001 reported an inbreeding coefficient of about 4.1% and an effective number of ancestors of 28.9 — moderate by French-breed standards, but reflecting a narrow founder base.8 The breed passed through at least two severe bottlenecks (the French Revolution and World War II), leaving only a handful of dogs by the 1960s; a study of Israeli dogs confirmed "several genetic bottlenecks" and a small effective population size, with inherited cardiac defects traceable to three ancestors.2 Proxy work on the closely comparable Bullmastiff (effective population size ~29–41) and on UK pedigree breeds generally indicates the same diversity-erosion pressures apply.1213

The Dogue de Bordeaux belongs to the continental mastiff / Molosser cluster and is most usefully compared with other estate- and property-guardian mastiffs rather than with pastoral livestock guardians. Documentary sources note possible Bullmastiff contribution (English Bullmastiffs were sold in Bordeaux in the late 19th century), and a Dogue bitch imported to the USA in 1959 was registered as an English Mastiff during the post-war revival period. These are morphological and historical affinities; no genomic study has placed the breed relative to its relatives. It should not be listed among livestock-guardian breeds without a clear caveat that it is not one.

IX Setting the record straight

"It's a livestock guardian dog."
No. Every official source classifies it as a guard/defence/dissuasion breed for estates and property. There is no documented flock bonding, no predator-deterrence work at pasture, and no pastoral or transhumant history — and its prey drive and territoriality are the opposite of the LGD profile.
"A 2,000-year-old breed descended from Roman war dogs (or Tibetan Mastiffs)."
Unproven breed mythology. The earliest credible textual reference to an ancestor type is 14th-century, and no genetic or primary historical evidence supports Roman, Tibetan or medieval-war-dog descent.
"A gentle giant that is naturally safe with children and other animals without training."
No behaviour study supports this. The breed has a fighting heritage and, per the FCI standard, males normally have a dominant character; breed and veterinary sources stress that firm leadership, early and extensive socialisation and management are required.
"A robust, long-lived working dog."
Reported lifespan is only about 5–8 years — among the shortest of any breed — driven by cardiac, orthopedic and brachycephalic disease documented in peer-reviewed studies.

What we're still learning

Much of the Dogue de Bordeaux's deep history and its "gentle giant" reputation rests on breed-club literature rather than peer-reviewed study. The verifiable record begins in the 14th century; claims of ancient ancestry are tradition, not evidence. Health is the best-documented area — and the news there is serious. The largest gaps are a total absence of breed-specific genomic and temperament studies, no cancer-epidemiology or BOAS-grading study despite clear need, and no working-performance data (the breed has no surviving working population). Where only proxy or commercial figures exist, they are labelled as such above.
