The Broholmer — also called the Danish Mastiff — is a large, mastiff-type Danish breed whose best-documented working role is estate, manor and property guardian, not livestock guardian. It takes its name from the Broholm estate on the island of Funen, where Chamberlain N. F. B. Sehested formalised its breeding in the 19th century. Historically it guarded manor houses, large farms, Copenhagen butcher shops (the slagterhund, or "butcher's dog") and Tivoli Gardens at night, deterring intruders through size, presence and voice rather than by living with and defending grazing flocks. The original population died out in the 1950s; today's dogs descend from a documented reconstruction begun in the 1970s.1
I History & origins Documented
The mastiff type behind the Broholmer has been known in Denmark since at least the Middle Ages, when large dogs were used for stag hunting; as hunting gave way to estate life, breeders selectively toned down the hunting drive and the dogs became guardians of manors and large farms. The modern breed takes its name from the Broholm estate in Gudme, on southern Funen, where the archaeologist and Chamberlain N. F. B. Sehested (1813–1882) kept a kennel of roughly 40 dogs and distributed breeding stock on condition that recipients continued the programme. The first breed standard was drawn up in 1886 at Denmark's first dog show, in the gardens of Rosenborg Castle. Early 20th-century distemper epidemics, uncontrolled breeding, and two World Wars collapsed the population, and the last registered Broholmer is recorded as dying in the early-to-mid 1950s. A public appeal in 1974 launched a formal reconstruction: two surviving type-correct males and a small number of other dogs were bred together, later reinforced with an English Mastiff × Spanish Mastiff cross and a single Great Dane introduction to widen the gene pool. The rebuilt breed gained full FCI recognition in 1998.1

II Physical & conformation
Recorded coat is Short, dense. A full physical profile — coat structure and care, climate tolerance, skeletal conformation and sexual dimorphism — is not yet collected for this breed.
III Working role Documented
Across FCI, Danish and Swedish kennel-club documentation, the Broholmer's best-evidenced role is guarding fixed property — manor houses (herregårde), large farms, and urban premises — where it deterred intruders by presence, size and voice. In 19th- and early 20th-century Copenhagen it was the slagterhund ("butcher's dog") kept by butchers, coal merchants and cattle dealers, and black Broholmers served as night watchdogs at Tivoli Gardens around 1900; Copenhagen Zoo kept the breed from about 1859 to 1929. Its documented history is one of property and personal guarding, not pastoral work: no reviewed source describes Broholmers bonding with sheep or goats, patrolling pastures, or defending flocks from predators, and Denmark had no transhumant pastoral system of the kind that produced true livestock guardian dogs. A frequently repeated claim that the breed drove cattle to market in Jutland traces only to breed-club and secondary sources and remains unverified against primary evidence. Genetic and behavioural research on true livestock guardian breeds shows that guardian function follows a specific ancestry and early livestock-bonding behaviour that large size or mastiff shape alone do not confer — and none of that evidence includes the Broholmer.1617
IV Behavioral profile Qualitative
No peer-reviewed behavioural or temperament study exists for the Broholmer; the assessments below come from the FCI standard and from breed-club and owner descriptions, and are qualitative rather than measured. The standard calls for a dog that is calm, good-tempered, friendly and watchful, with great self-confidence, and lists aggressive or overly shy dogs as disqualifying faults. Breed clubs describe a family-attached guardian, often reserved toward strangers, that "exercises its power through its voice" rather than by biting. It is not a flock-bonding livestock guardian, and no formal prey-drive testing around stock has been published. Because it can reach 70 kg or more, breed clubs themselves caution that it needs experienced, consistent handling — so it is not a beginner's dog. Broader questionnaire studies of guarding-type breeds find measurable elevations in stranger- and owner-directed aggression relative to other breed groups, a reason to treat "gentle giant" claims with care rather than as established fact.2019 Traits without a documented assessment are shown as gaps rather than guessed.
V Health Documented
There is no published, peer-reviewed veterinary study specific to the Broholmer for hip or elbow dysplasia prevalence, bloat, cardiac disease, cancer, or lifespan. What is documented is a set of mandatory breed-club screening requirements, plus a risk picture inferred from giant- and mastiff-breed proxy research — labelled as proxy below:
- Hip dysplasia (HD) — every Danish breeding Broholmer must be hip-radiographed at 18 months or older, with accepted grades A, B and C and a combined parental HD-index requirement; no breed-specific prevalence figure has been published. Mastiff-type relatives set the risk context: in a large Swedish screening study the Dogue de Bordeaux had the highest hip-dysplasia prevalence of any breed (75.4%) and the Bullmastiff the second-highest (65.1%).2 Screening programmes in other breeds have measurably lowered HD over time.34
- Elbow dysplasia (ED) — screening is mandatory alongside HD (accepted grades 0 and 1; grade 2 only with restriction). A grade-2 exception was granted for a Swedish import in 2004 to widen the gene pool, indicating ED is a recognised concern. No breed-specific prevalence exists; the same mastiff-type proxy data apply.2
- Bloat / gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) — no Broholmer-specific data exist, but as a large, deep-chested breed it falls squarely in the recognised high-risk group; epidemiological studies consistently identify large, deep-chested, purebred dogs as the primary GDV population and support discussing prophylactic gastropexy.56789
- Cardiac disease — a breed-club initiative, "Projekt Broholmerhjärta" (Project Broholmer Heart), was set up to monitor heart disease, but no study results have been published.
- Other documented concerns — breed-club (Swedish Kennel Club) records list osteochondrosis (OCD), skin problems, reduced mating willingness/fertility, and cryptorchidism as conditions tracked in the breeding population, none with published prevalence figures.
All Danish breeding dogs also undergo a mandatory mental-description (MH) test, and German and other affiliate clubs run their own behavioural assessments. Breed-club sources give a typical lifespan of roughly 8–10 years, with occasional individuals reaching 13–14 years; no formal lifespan study has been published. Every prevalence figure above is drawn from other breeds as proxy evidence — none is a Broholmer measurement.
VI DNA & origin research Peer-reviewed
Only one peer-reviewed genetic study directly examines the Broholmer: a SNP-genotyping analysis of five Danish breeds that included 22 Broholmers on a 170,000-marker array.1 No whole-genome, haplotype, or admixture study of the breed has been published, so its precise relationship to the English Mastiff, Great Dane, or other mastiffs used in its reconstruction remains untested.
VII Related & compared breeds Documented
The modern Broholmer's gene pool was rebuilt in the 1970s–80s with an English Mastiff × Spanish Mastiff cross and a single Great Dane introduction, which are its closest documented outside relatives. It is one of five Danish national breeds and is sometimes confused by name with the entirely separate Old Danish Pointing Dog. True livestock guardian breeds such as the Kangal were considered as outcrosses during reconstruction but rejected.
VIII Conservation & status Documented
The Broholmer is a reconstructed, rare national breed under active conservation management. It carries no formal FAO grade, but its own kennel clubs treat it as still vulnerable:
The breed was rebuilt from a handful of survivors after the original population died out in the 1950s. About 425 dogs existed in Denmark at full FCI recognition in 1998, rising to an estimated 1,400 worldwide by 2013; in 2024 the Danish Kennel Club registered 152 Broholmers. Breed clubs in Denmark (Broholmerselskabet), Sweden/Norway, Germany, Finland and Italy coordinate breeding under Danish-aligned rules, and the 2013 genetic study was supported partly to inform those strategies.1 The central concern is a small effective population with documented founder effects; a 2015 move to loosen Danish breeding rules was contested by the breed society, which favoured tighter control of the gene pool. Conservation experience with comparable rare Nordic and Scandinavian breeds — where inbreeding rose and founder alleles were lost even in numerically larger populations, and outcrossing proved the only durable rescue — frames the risks the Broholmer faces.10111213

What we're still learning
Much of the Broholmer's deep history is breed tradition rather than tested fact. A single peer-reviewed study examines its genetics, and there is no breed-specific published research on its health or behaviour — so the health section rests on kennel-club screening rules and giant-breed proxy data, and the behaviour section on breed standards and owner accounts. Where a claim could not be sourced, it has been left as a gap rather than filled in.
