The Mongolian Bankhar (Монгол банхар) is a large livestock-guardian and camp-protection dog of Mongolia's nomadic and semi-nomadic herders, documented across the country's steppe, mountain-steppe, desert-steppe and Gobi regions. Ethnographic, pastoral and conservation sources consistently describe it as a working landrace — a population shaped over centuries by a harsh climate and the demands of herding — rather than a kennel-standardised breed in the Western sense. Its name means, affectionately, "fluffy" or "chubby." A peer-reviewed conservation study found that herders who received guardian dogs of this type experienced a statistically significant drop in livestock lost to wolves, foxes, snow leopards and birds of prey.1 As of mid-2026 the Bankhar is not recognised by the FCI, though it has been registered nationally and shown internationally in the non-recognised-breed category.

Name & origin Documented

In comparative surveys of guardian-dog naming, Bankhar (Монгол банхар) is classified as a trait-descriptor name — one built from a physical or perceived characteristic rather than from a job or a place — and is glossed as "chubby," placing it in the same naming family as the Turkish Akbaş ("white head"). This sets it apart from the two other patterns that dominate Eurasian guardian-dog vocabulary: function-noun compounds that label a dog by its work — including the Mongols' own khotch nokhoi (camp dog) and malch nokhoi (herding dog) — and toponym- or ethnonym-based names such as Kangal or Komondor. In modern conservation writing the English acronym LGD ("Livestock Guardian Dog") has attached itself to the breed as a secondary, imported label that circulates alongside the native Mongolian term.

I History & origins Documented

The Bankhar's documented place in Mongolian pastoral culture reaches back at least to the 13th-century Secret History of the Mongols, which describes household dogs in terms of spiritual kinship, and ethnographic fieldwork records it as the native Mongol working dog embedded in an entire vocabulary of nomadic herding.2 No archaeological study has yet linked excavated steppe dog remains to the Bankhar type in peer-reviewed literature, so its deep prehistory remains a research gap. Multiple independent sources describe a steep decline during the Soviet era (roughly the 1940s–1990), when collectivisation left no place for household guardian dogs, culling was encouraged on public-health grounds, and dog skins were exported for fur. Since the 1990s the type has been the focus of active recovery, led chiefly by the Mongolian Bankhar Dog Project.

II Physical & conformation

III Working role Documented

Ethnographic sources record two overlapping working functions. As a camp-and-property guardian (khotch nokhoi) the Bankhar protects the ger encampment, the pens and the family, above all at night; as a pasture dog (malch nokhoi) it accompanies herders to grazing and on multi-day journeys (otorlokh), deterring predators by presence rather than by herding the stock.2 It is most documented guarding sheep and goats, with cattle, horses, camels and yaks named in pastoral accounts, and the project that breeds it describes a distinctive behaviour of moving stock across the landscape as a loose group — unlike border-collie-style herding. Its predators are the wolf (the black coat is traditionally preferred so livestock can tell the guardian from a wolf), the snow leopard, foxes and birds of prey. The scale of the threat is real: household surveys in Mongolia report average losses on the order of US$825 per herder per year, with wolves alone accounting for roughly 4% of livestock in some provinces.56 A peer-reviewed survey of 16 herders found a statistically significant reduction in annual predation losses after they received guardian dogs (Wilcoxon signed-rank, p = .001), although that study did not identify its dogs as Bankhar specifically.1 A widely repeated figure of an 85–100% reduction in losses comes from the breeding project's own materials and should be read as program self-reporting, not independent data.

IV Behavioral profile Qualitative

No behavioural study has ever measured the Bankhar as a named breed, so the ratings below are qualitative readings of ethnographic and field descriptions together with the general livestock-guardian literature — not scored data.21 Those accounts describe a camp-and-flock guardian that stays with the stock day and night, raises the alarm by barking, and deters predators by presence rather than by chasing them; dogs are socialised with sheep and goats from about five months of age.2 Guardian dogs of this functional type are characterised by flock bonding and by the absence of the chase-and-bite prey drive seen in herding breeds.10 Traits with no breed-specific description are shown as gaps rather than guessed.

V Health Qualitative

No health study uses the Bankhar as a named population — there is no breed-specific data on lifespan, hip or elbow dysplasia, bloat, or inherited disease. The points below are risks inferred from the dog's size and from Mongolian working-dog data, not measured in the breed:

  • Hip dysplasia is the most common orthopaedic condition in dogs and is most prevalent in large and giant breeds, with breed prevalence in screening databases ranging widely; large working dogs such as the Bankhar fall in the elevated-risk category by proxy, and orthopaedic screening is the standard mitigation for any large-breed breeding programme.9
  • Bloat / gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) risk is well established for large, deep-chested breeds; the Bankhar's morphology places it in that risk category, though no breed-specific incidence has been measured.
  • Vector-borne and infectious disease burden is documented directly for Mongolian working and free-ranging dogs — a metagenomic study of 100 Mongolian dogs found a high prevalence of tick-borne and other vector-borne pathogens.8

The Bankhar is also described as late-maturing, reaching full physical and mental maturity at around three to four years. No verified figure exists for its typical lifespan.

VI DNA & origin research Qualitative

No peer-reviewed genetic study has analysed the Bankhar as a named population — its phylogenetic position, population structure and relationship to neighbouring breeds are all uncharacterised. The nearest regional context is a genome-wide village-dog study that identified Central Asia, "perhaps near present-day Nepal and Mongolia," as the likely origin zone of domestic dogs; it included Mongolian village dogs (sampled with the breeding project's help) but did not analyse Bankhar dogs as a distinct group.3 A preliminary 2014 analysis of 14 samples on a canine SNP chip reported no detectable European-breed admixture and no close relatedness among the sampled dogs, but it is a commercial case study rather than a peer-reviewed publication. The closest studied relative is the Kazakh Tobet, a neighbouring Central Asian guardian with high diversity and ancient maternal haplotypes — a reasonable proxy for Inner Asian guardian genetics, but not a substitute for direct Bankhar data.4 Equations of the Bankhar with the Tibetan Mastiff are not supported by any published genetic comparison.

The Bankhar is often compared with — and sometimes conflated with — other Inner Asian guardian dogs, but peer-reviewed genetics has not resolved its relationship to any of them. The closest studied relative is the Kazakh Tobet.4 The Buryat-Mongolian Hotosho shares an ancestral region but has developed into a separate, Russian-registered breed with its own standard, and the labels "Tibetan Mastiff" and "Mongolian Mastiff" — common online — are rejected by Mongolian pastoral, kennel and conservation sources.

VIII Conservation & status Documented

The Bankhar collapsed as a working population during the Soviet period and is now the subject of active landrace-recovery work. No formal FAO or IUCN conservation status has been assigned, and no reliable census exists.

Journalistic, conservation-program and Mongolian state-media sources consistently describe a steep 20th-century decline: collectivisation left no room for household guardian dogs, official campaigns encouraged culling dogs as disease vectors, and dog skins were exported for fur; after the collectives collapsed in the 1990s many families returned to herding without guardian dogs and turned to shooting and poisoning predators. These accounts are mutually corroborating but rest on testimony rather than peer-reviewed historical study. Recovery is led chiefly by the Mongolian Bankhar Dog Project (operational since 2014), which breeds and places dogs with nomadic herders and frames the Bankhar as a landrace kept through an open, monitored breeding system rather than a closed pedigree. The Mongolian Kynological Federation reported roughly 8,000 registered Bankhar out of about 12,000 registered purebred dogs in 2024, and the project reported keeping about 20 breeding dogs and placing roughly 15 puppies a year as of 2021 — though the link between registered dogs and traditional working dogs is unclear. The broader livestock-guardian tool that the Bankhar represents declined worldwide through the 20th century before a modern, conservation-driven revival.7

IX Setting the record straight

"The Bankhar is a type of Tibetan Mastiff."
This equation is rejected by Mongolian pastoral, kennel and conservation sources; the breeding project treats mastiffs as genetically distinct non-working dogs, and no published genetic study has demonstrated a close Tibetan-Mastiff relationship.

The term appears in some internet sources but has no basis in Mongolian pastoral vocabulary or registry documentation and should not be treated as a synonym.

No field study documents individual combat outcomes. Guardian dogs work by bonding, presence and deterrence, and their effectiveness depends on rearing and management.

What we're still learning

Almost everything asserted about the Bankhar rests on breed-club, conservation-program and journalistic sources rather than peer-reviewed study — the type is noted in the scientific literature as "almost entirely missing" from it. There is no published genetic, morphometric, behavioural or health study that uses the Bankhar as a named population, and even the strongest field evidence for guardian-dog effectiveness in Mongolia did not identify its dogs as Bankhar. Population figures, precise size claims and ancient-origin stories should all be read as unverified pending primary research.
