(2000), the most-cited review of guardian animals, confirmed that LGDs reduce predation by 11–100% across studies, with documented effectiveness against coyotes, bears, wolves, and cheetahs. Scaling: The Team Factor
A critical behavioral difference: LGDs work cooperatively in teams and adding more dogs extends coverage territory. Llamas and donkeys must work as singles — if you put two llamas or two donkeys together, they form their own herd and abandon the livestock.
This means for large flocks, multiple pastures, or properties with complex terrain, only LGDs can scale. A GPS study by Gipson et al. (2012) confirmed that dogs maintain proximity to livestock even in multi-species grazing situations, though mixed-species groups may need more dogs than single-species herds.
