Intentional & Malicious Poisoning (Baits)

Commonly used in: Intentional malicious baiting (laced into hotdogs or ground beef), sugar-free gum, peanut butter.

Hallmark signs: Extreme weakness, collapse, vomiting, and seizures caused by sudden, massive insulin release and crashing blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Can rapidly progress to acute liver failure.
Immediate Action: Rub Karo syrup, honey, or maple syrup on the dog's gums while en route to the vet. Do NOT induce vomiting if the dog is lethargic or seizing. Vet Tx: IV dextrose administration and liver protectants (SAMe, Milk Thistle).

Ethylene Glycol (Antifreeze)

Commonly used in: Both accidental garage spills and malicious poisoning (it tastes sweet to dogs). It is rapidly absorbed.

Hallmark signs: "Drunken" behavior, severe lethargy, vomiting, and wobbliness (ataxia). Within 12-24 hours, the dog may appear to recover normally before crashing into irreversible acute kidney failure.
Vet Tx: Vomiting can be induced if caught *immediately*. Fomepizole (Antizol-Vet) or IV ethanol must be given rapidly to bind the toxin before it crystalizes in the kidneys. Delayed care after poisoning exposure can worsen outcomes, so suspected toxin ingestion should be evaluated promptly by a veterinarian or poison control resource.

Strychnine

Onset: 10 mins to 2 hours Hyperacute Emergency

Commonly used in: Gopher bait and illegal predator baiting (to kill wolves or coyotes). It causes the nervous system to lose all inhibitory control.

Hallmark signs: Extreme apprehension, muscle tremors, and "sawhorse" stance. Progresses rapidly to severe, rigid, generalized seizures triggered by the slightest noise or touch.
Severe poisoning exposure may require urgent veterinary evaluation and supportive care, especially if neurologic signs, collapse, or rapid decline are present. Placing the dog in a completely dark, silent environment can help prevent reflex seizures.

Sodium Cyanide (M-44 Devices)

Onset: 1 to 5 minutes Hyperacute Emergency

Commonly used in: M-44 devices ("cyanide bombs") placed by government agencies or ranchers for coyote/wolf control. The dog bites the scented bait cap, triggering a spring that shoots cyanide powder into the dog's mouth.

Hallmark signs: Gasping, cherry-red gums, convulsions, and collapse. Cyanide halts the body's ability to use oxygen at the cellular level.
Suspected cyanide exposure is a life-threatening emergency and should be handled immediately by a veterinarian or emergency poison-control resource. Warning: These devices are incredibly lethal. If working adjacent to public land where M-44s are deployed, map their locations and keep dogs strictly fenced.

Accidental Farm Chemicals & Rodenticides

Rodenticides (Rat/Mouse Poison)

Farm dogs often ingest bait directly from barns or via secondary poisoning (eating a poisoned rodent—see our Scavenging page). You MUST bring the bait box to the vet. The treatments are entirely different.

  • Anticoagulants (Brodifacoum, Diphacinone): Stops blood clotting. Signs: Unexplained bruising, coughing blood, pale gums (Onset: 3-5 days). Recovery from serious poisoning may require ongoing veterinary oversight and extended supportive care.
  • Bromethalin: Causes brain swelling. Signs: Tremors, paralysis, seizures (Onset: hours). No antidote exists. Suspected poisoning should be handled urgently by a veterinarian or poison control resource, because safe next steps depend on the toxin, timing, and the dog’s condition.
  • Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3): Causes massive calcium spikes leading to acute kidney failure. Signs: Increased urination/thirst, lethargy, vomiting. Suspected poisoning should be handled urgently with veterinary or poison-control guidance, because safe care decisions depend on the toxin, timing, symptoms, and the dog’s condition.

Organophosphates / Insecticides

Onset: Minutes to hours Acute Emergency

Commonly used in: Crop dusting, heavy agricultural insecticides, and some older flea/tick dips.

Hallmark signs (SLUDDE): Salivation, Lacrimation (tearing), Urination, Defecation, Dyspnea (breathing trouble), and Emesis (vomiting). Accompanied by muscle twitching and pinpoint pupils.
Suspected toxin exposure should be treated as urgent, because safe care decisions depend on the substance involved, timing, symptoms, and veterinary or poison-control guidance.

Lead Toxicosis

Onset: Days to weeks (chronic) Acute

Commonly used in: Old tractor batteries dumped in pastures, lead paint peeling from old barns, roofing materials, and shotgun pellets.

Hallmark signs: Primarily gastrointestinal (vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain) combined with neurological signs (blindness, jaw snapping, seizures).
Heavy metal exposure can be serious, and suspected cases should be evaluated promptly by a veterinarian or poison-control resource so appropriate care can be determined.

Toxic Pasture Plants

While most LGDs do not "graze", bored adolescents or dogs scavenging may ingest highly toxic plants growing along fence lines or in ornamental landscaping near barns.

Water Hemlock & Poison Hemlock

Often found in wet pastures or along ditches. Hemlock contains cicutoxin (Water Hemlock) or coniine (Poison Hemlock).

Signs: Violent, grand-mal seizures (Water Hemlock) or ascending paralysis and respiratory failure without seizures (Poison Hemlock). Highly lethal.
Vet Tx: Aggressive decontamination and intensive supportive care.

Oleander

Onset: 30 mins to 2 hours Hyperacute Emergency

A common ornamental shrub in warmer climates. All parts are highly toxic. Contains cardiac glycosides causing severe arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), vomiting, and sudden death.

Signs: Severe arrhythmias, vomiting, sudden death.
Vet Tx: Emesis (if early), activated charcoal, anti-arrhythmic medications, and supportive care.

Sago Palm

Found primarily in the Southern US. Contains cycasin, which causes devastating acute liver failure. The seeds ("nuts") are the most toxic part.

Signs: Vomiting, jaundice, bleeding, and liver failure.
Vet Tx: Aggressive decontamination, liver protectants, IV fluids, plasma transfusions if coagulopathy develops.

Carcass Scavenging Toxicoses

Livestock guardian dogs naturally scavenge. When they ingest rotting carcasses, raw fish, or diseased wildlife, they are at risk for specific bacterial toxicoses. Early recognition of these syndromes is critical.

Botulism (Carrion Toxicity)

Onset: 24 hours to 4 days Acute Emergency

Commonly caused by: Ingestion of pre-formed botulinum toxin in rotting carcasses (especially dead poultry or waterfowl) or spoiled meat.

Hallmark signs: Ascending flaccid paralysis (starting in the hind legs and moving forward) while the dog remains fully aware and sensitive to pain. Often accompanied by vomiting, dehydration, and urinary retention.
Vet Tx: Aggressive supportive care. If paralysis reaches the diaphragm, mechanical ventilation is required. Can be fatal from respiratory failure if untreated, but full recovery is possible with intensive care.

Salmon Poisoning Disease

Onset: 8-10 days Acute Emergency

Commonly caused by: Eating raw or improperly cooked fish containing rickettsia-infected flukes, or swimming in contaminated waters.

Hallmark signs: Acute febrile illness (high fever), severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and swollen lymph nodes. Highly fatal if untreated.
Vet Tx: Intravenous tetracyclines (often rapid improvement within 24-72h) and praziquantel to kill the trematodes.

Tularemia ("Rabbit Fever")

Onset: ~36 hours Urgent (Zoonotic Risk)

Commonly caused by: Contact with or ingestion of infected wild rabbits, rodents, or tick bites.

Hallmark signs: Moderate to severe febrile illness, extreme lethargy, lack of appetite, and significantly swollen lymph nodes.
Vet Tx: Extended course of Doxycycline (14-21 days). Warning: Highly zoonotic—handle suspected dogs and carcasses with extreme care.

Blue-Green Algae (Cyanotoxins)

Onset: 15 minutes to 4 hours Hyperacute Emergency

Where it occurs: Stock ponds, farm dams, irrigation reservoirs, and slow-moving creeks during hot weather (June–October). LGDs are at extreme risk because they drink from the same water sources as livestock.

Hallmark signs: Two presentations: Hepatotoxic (microcystin) — vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, liver failure within 24–72 hours. Neurotoxic (anatoxin-a) — muscle tremors, rigidity, paralysis, respiratory failure within minutes. Death can occur before you reach a vet.
Immediate Action: Rinse the dog thoroughly (cyanotoxins absorb through skin). Do NOT induce vomiting — risk of aspiration is extreme. Vet Tx: Aggressive IV fluids, activated charcoal (if within 1 hour), liver protectants (SAMe/silymarin for microcystin), and seizure control. No specific antidote exists.

Prevention: Fence off any pond or trough with visible green scum, foam, or paint-like surface film. Provide clean, aerated water sources. Test suspect water with commercial cyanotoxin strip tests during bloom season.

Predator-Control Poisons

In addition to M-44 cyanide devices (covered above), LGDs face secondary and direct exposure to poisons deployed for predator and pest management:

Sodium Fluoroacetate (Compound 1080)

Onset: 30 minutes to 6 hours Hyperacute Emergency

Where it occurs: Legal in Australia and New Zealand for wild dog/dingo control; banned in the US since 1972 but historically used in predator control. Dogs may encounter legacy baits or illegally sourced material. Also used in some South American countries.

Hallmark signs: Extreme agitation, running fits, howling, then sudden cardiovascular collapse. The toxin blocks the citric acid cycle, halting cellular energy production. Seizures followed by cardiac arrest.
Some poisoning exposures may not have a reliable antidote for dogs, so suspected cases should be discussed promptly with a veterinarian or poison-control resource. Prognosis is grave.

Zinc Phosphide (Gopher/Mole Bait)

Onset: 15 minutes to 4 hours Hyperacute Emergency

Where it occurs: Widely used on farms and ranches for burrowing rodent control. Dogs may eat bait pellets directly or ingest poisoned gophers (secondary toxicity).

Hallmark signs: Zinc phosphide reacts with stomach acid to release phosphine gas. Signs include garlic/rotten fish breath odor, severe abdominal pain, bloody vomit, and rapid cardiovascular collapse.
Immediate Action: Do NOT induce vomiting at home — phosphine gas released during emesis is toxic to humans. Vet Tx: Gastric lavage in a well-ventilated area, activated charcoal, IV fluids, cardiac monitoring. Warning to vet staff: PPE required — phosphine gas in vomitus is a human health hazard.

Emergency Emesis Reference

NEVER induce vomiting if: The dog is seizing, unconscious, or has ingested a corrosive/petroleum product. When in doubt, call ASPCA Poison Control first.

If your vet or ASPCA Poison Control directs you to induce vomiting at home, use 3% hydrogen peroxide only:

Farm Chemical Storage Protocol

Preventing poisoning exposure is safer and less costly than responding after a dog is already ill. Implement these storage protocols on every farm with LGDs:

  • Lock all chemicals: Rodenticides, fertilizers, herbicides, and antifreeze must be stored in locked metal cabinets or rooms — not open barn shelves.
  • Bait station audit: Use tamper-resistant bait stations only. Audit all stations monthly. Map every station location and ensure LGDs cannot access them.
  • M-44 awareness: If your property borders BLM or USDA Wildlife Services land, request a map of all M-44 placements. Mark them on your property map and fence accordingly.
  • Algae monitoring: Test stock ponds weekly during summer. Post warning signs near suspect water. Provide alternative clean water.
  • Neighbor notification: Inform adjacent property owners that you have working dogs on-site. Many malicious poisonings result from misunderstandings about dog activity near property lines.
