The Creep Feeder Solution
The single most common operational failure on a working farm is livestock eating the dog's food. This wastes expensive kibble, makes the dog territorial (leading to biting), and can cause bloat in ruminants.
A creep feeder is a physical barrier that allows the dog in, but keeps the livestock out.
Building a Basic Creep Feeder
- For Sheep/Goats: Use cattle panels with a custom-cut hole. The hole should be exactly the width of your dog's shoulders, with a bar across the top forcing the dog to duck. Sheep and goats will not easily duck and squeeze through a tight space.
- For Cattle: A simple hot-wire set at 36 inches will keep cattle out while allowing the LGD to easily duck underneath.
- For Pigs: Pigs are notorious for breaking into dog food. You must use heavy-duty steel gates with a very tight dog-door, or feed the dog in an elevated structure they must jump into.
Feeding Schedules in the Field
Unlike house pets, working LGDs do not do well with scheduled, 10-minute feeding windows. They need to patrol and eat on their own time.
- Free-Feeding: In a secure creep feeder, free-feeding is the standard for working dogs. It reduces food anxiety and resource guarding.
- Night Rations: If you must schedule feed, feed them heavily in the evening before their active patrol hours begin.
Water Management in Winter
In freezing climates, ensuring the dog has liquid water when out in the pasture is critical. Heated water buckets require electricity, which isn't always available in a 100-acre pasture.
- Insulated Troughs: Use heavily insulated troughs.
- Daily Ice Breaking: Incorporate ice-breaking into your daily livestock checks.
